Reflection
Silence
· As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to clear our minds, so that we can hear him better.

· How can a young person live a pure life? By obeying your word, Father. Teach us today, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways. (from Psalm 119:9,16)

Passage
Today’s passage is from first three verses of John’s gospel account:
English Standard Version (Chapter 1)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Exhortation
John begins his gospel account with these words: “In the beginning…” Have you ever heard those words before? How about the first words of the Bible, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” John is about to tell us something magnificent! In Genesis 1 we learn that God created everything. How did he do it? He spoke! He said “Let there be” and the world was formed and filled. In John 1 we learn that the Word was God! He was in the beginning with God. He? The Word is a He? Yes! This is a marvelous mystery. God is so big, so awesome, so unique, that sometimes it’s hard for us humans to understand everything about him. But, right here at the beginning of John’s gospel we read that the Word of God is God and that the Word is a He, a person. Can you guess who John is talking about? Who is the Word of God? Who is the He that was in the beginning with God? (I bet you know who it is!) Whoever John is talking about, made the world and all that is in it. I like to say, in Genesis 1 we see that the world began with words, and in John 1 we see that the Word began the world! Whoever John is writing about is the creator who said, “Let there be light” in Genesis 1. In fact, John says that He is the light and life of mankind! Just like in Genesis 1, the light shines in the darkness.
Have you guessed yet who John is talking about? Jesus! Jesus is the Word of God, He is the creator. He was in the beginning with the Father. Jesus is the light and life of mankind! WOW! What wonderful news! King Jesus is our Maker, He’s our light, He is our life!
Call to Action: Why don’t we take a few seconds, right now, to quietly reflect on the wonder of this passage.
[7 seconds of silence]
Closing Prayer
Let’s pray.
[3 seconds of silence]
Father, help us to grow in knowledge and understanding. Help us to see your Son for who he truly is, our creator, our saving King who shines like a bright Marvelous Light in a dark world. It is in his name, in Jesus’ name, that we ask this. Amen.
