Reflection

Silence
· As we begin, let us remember that God calls His people, young and old, to be still and know that He is God. Let's take a few seconds to clear our minds, so that we can hear him better.
[5 seconds of silence]
Opening Prayer
(Sunday)
· Father, we rejoice that you have given us a new day to worship you. Today, give us a new song in our heart – a song of praise. (from Psalm 40:3)

Passage
Today’s passage is from Psalm 40 verses 1-3:

I waited patiently for the Lord. He turned to me and heard my cry.

2 He lifted me out of the pit of destruction, out of the sticky mud. He stood me on a rock. He made my feet steady.

3 He put a new song in my mouth. It was a song of praise to our God. Many people will see this and worship him. Then they will trust the Lord.

Exhortation
If you read the the Psalms of David long enough, you’ll begin to see him as a spiritual friend. David experiences all kinds of emotions. One minute he’s bursting with joy and gratitude, while the next he’s struggling with deep sorrow or pain. This is one of the things I love most about the Bible. While it is God’s word, it is given to us through real humans who experience the ups and downs of real life.
Sometimes I’m on top of the world, my day is going great, my heart is full and I feel like everything is in it’s right place. When I’m looking for words to help me praise God for these blessings, I know that I can go to the Psalms and find them. Maybe I’ll pray this from Psalm 47: “Clap your hands, all you people. Shout to God with joy. The Lord Most High is wonderful.”
But some days things seems to be out of place. Maybe I’m not feeling well, or maybe I’ve hurt someone I love by being selfish, or maybe I’ve lost someone special to me. It’s like feeling stuck in a bad place. On days like that I know I can also go to the Psalms for help. Like our Psalm today. David says he was in “the pit of destruction…the sticky mud.” Does it sound like everything is goin well for David in this moment? No, not at all. He feels like he’s stuck in a bad situation and he needs help. What does he do? The Bible says he cries out to God and waits patiently. He needs to be patient because he must wait for God’s perfect timing. And, at the right time, God comes and pulls him out of that situation and puts him on firm ground. God’s help stirs up a new sing in David’s heart. A song of praise and gratitude.
Call to Action: Do you see the wonder of God’s Word – the Bible? It’s there for us through the ups and downs of life. It speaks to us and helps us as we move through seasons of joy and pain. Take a few seconds to reflect on how wonderful it is that God has given us the Bible.

Let's pray.

Father your word is a lamp to our feet, a guide on the winging path of life. Thank you. Thank you for giving us the Bible. What a wonderful gift. Help us to read it and to love it. We ask this in the name of our King, Jesus. Amen
