Chapter 15
Chapter 15
Praise song from verses 1-21 - praise
led by Miriam the prophetess (Sister to Aaron and Moses)
interesting that that Moses calls her Aaron’s sister
We will start tracking the times the people have complained/grumbled
After making brick without straws
Trapped at the Red Sea
both understandable . . . so really won’t count that
But after the great Red Sea miracle, they traveled three days in the desert without finding water.
Finally found water, but it was too bitter to drink and the people complained
Moses cried out to the Lord for help . . . God told him to throw a piece of wood into the water and that fixed the problem
Lesson . . . .
Make sure you are crying out and not complaining.
Make sure you are crying out and not complaining.
they complained about God/Moses
Moses cried out to God
differences?
bad attitude when complaining
not worth following God
this is not working
lack of hope
no faith
then traveled on and found some more water that didn’t need fixing
Chapter 16
Chapter 16
Complain about food - back in Egypt we had all the meat and bread we wanted. And now we are about to starve to death
God head their complaining
not asking in faith, but complaining
Moses says you are complaining against God, not us!
you are saying his leadership is bad
but by evening you will realize it was the Lord who brought you out (not me)
Showed them the glory of the Lord in a cloud
Quail came in that evening
Manna fell that next morning
Dew would fall on ground, when dew evaporated, you would see the bread
white, tasted liken honey wafers, they could cook it
Moses gave them instructions on how to gather it
So God gave them meat and bread
Note: We learn something about the simple reason for the Sabbath
We talk about context: This command about gathering six days, was a command given to slaves who were used to working 7 days a week
29 “See, the Lord has given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.”
NLT calls it a gift from the Lord
I bet they were like, wow!
God didn’t need rest when he created the world, we need rest, so God made an extra day for us.
Sabbath (like all of God’s laws) is not meant to be a burden; some people feel more holy if religious days and stuff make life hard on you
Jesus time - they took it too far. They create very strict laws about not working, they got mad at him for healing, mad at disciples for picking some corn to eat
in my father’s time - couldn’t make noise in the house
in my time - couldn’t play basketball
in original context, the sabbath was meant to be a blessing, a tine to rest and recuperate
27 Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
Sabbath was made to relieve us from burden, not put us under burden.
Jesus said the Sabbath was meant to help people
People will even get on you for not using Saturday
16 So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.
the point of the Sabbath is that you need rest every week . . . rest, reflect on God
don’t let modern people make it a burden to you (Seventh DAy adventist)
17 For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality.
Sabbath is made for us and it points to Christ
Ultimately, Christ is our Sabbath, our rest
Resurrection is our rest from labors of the world
goes on to say people who insist on these things do are doing it out of proud - I am a better, stronger Christian because I don’t eat pork, worship on Saturdays
