Be Strong and Courageous

Jos 1:6–9

Summary: In Joshua 1:6–9, God encourages Joshua to be strong and courageous as he prepares to lead the Israelites into the promised land, emphasizing the importance of obeying God's law.
Application: This passage reminds us that our strength and courage come from faithfully following God's commands. In times of uncertainty or difficulty, we can find courage in knowing that God is with us and will help us as we remain obedient to Him.
Teaching: Through this passage, we learn that being strong and courageous is not about relying on our own abilities, but on trusting in God and His promises. Obedience to God's word is the foundation of true strength and courage.
How this passage could point to Christ: In this passage, we see a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who would come to fulfill the law and provide the ultimate source of strength and courage for believers. Jesus is the embodiment of God's faithfulness and promises, enabling us to live boldly for Him.
Big Idea: True strength and courage come from faithfully following God's commands, trusting in His promises, and relying on the ultimate source of strength, Jesus Christ.
Recommended Study: For a deeper study on the significance of God's law in Joshua 1 and its implications for believers today, explore the themes of obedience, faithfulness, and leadership in the Logos library. Additionally, consider examining how Christ's fulfillment of the law in the New Testament connects to Joshua's leadership in the Old Testament, highlighting the continuity of God's promises throughout Scripture.

1. Strength in Obedience

Jos 1:6
You could highlight that being strong and courageous is not just a personal endeavour but a communal requirement for leading others in faith. This point reflects the big idea by emphasizing obedience to God as the source of strength, similarly to how Jesus led by example, showing strength through obedience and love.

2. Courage through Commitment

Jos 1:7
Maybe discuss the importance of unwavering adherence to God's law for finding courage. This mirrors the way Jesus perfectly adhered to God’s law, offering us a model of courage and commitment. The application here focuses on the courage to follow God's commands even when it's challenging.

3. Constant in Scripture

Jos 1:8
Perhaps explore the notion that meditating on God's Word day and night is crucial for maintaining this courage and strength. This ties back to the big idea by pointing out that constant engagement with Scripture is foundational for living a life of faith, paralleling how Christ lived in total alignment with God’s will.

4. Courage Comes from God

Jos 1:9
You could conclude with the reassurance that God's presence is what ultimately enables us to be strong and courageous. This aligns with the big idea by emphasizing that our strength comes from God's promises, as Jesus showed us through relying on the Father’s presence for his strength.
