2 Peter 3:1-2… Remember..

Psalm 16:8 “I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.”

Introduction...

One thing I have found helpful in my walk with Christ. Is to set aside some time to meditate...
Meditate…1, to engage in contemplation or reflection
2,to engage in mental exercise (such as concentration on one's breathing or repetition of a mantra) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness
help clear you mind, so you can focus on what’s important...
what can be more important, than the word of God....the gospel of Christ...
focusing on the word of God is nothing new…I can hear the psalmist now....
Psalm 1:2 “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.”
and this is what Peter is telling the believers in his 2 letter...
to have pure minds and to remember the words that they have heard spoken before...
words that can and will lead to salvation, to peace, to joy, to comfort, to a city called heaven...
I know it may seem boring at times but it is needed...
repeating something is very beneficial....they say it takes 18 plus days to form habit...
and all peter was doing was asking the people to remember...
all i do every sunday and on tuesday…is ask the people to remember...
Let’s take a journey into the word....

History..

in this 2nd letter please note that this a epistle, letter, written by Peter, the apostle to the jews, that was written for all believers…TALK, PREACH.....
this epistle is to help combat false teaching and false doctrine....TALK, PREACH…...
this epistle stresses the importance of knowledge…TALK, PREACH....
each chapter of this letter, has a specific purpose…chapter 1, the great salvation of God
chapter 2, warning against false teachers
chapter 3, second coming of christ and the end of the world as we know it...
TALK, PREACH.....
with so much in this world that could possibly take our minds and sight off of Christ, we must know that In the midst of uncertainty and struggle, believers in Jesus Christ must never lose sight of the certainty and hope of the future that bring meaning to the present.
TALK, PREACH......
our present and our future, depends on God’s word…we need to understand three important facts about God and the promise of Christ’s coming
1, God’s Word Is True
2, God’s Work Is Consistent
3, God’s Will Is Merciful
and all of that can be found in his word....if we remember...
Let’s go deeper...

Points/body..

2 Peter 3:1–2 “Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,”
Peter reminds us to remember to keep our MINDS on the WORDS of THEN and NOW…(repeat)..
we must remember...
2 Peter 3:1 “Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder),”
The purest minds need stirring up at times. It would be a great pity to stir up impure minds. That would only be to do mischief; but pure minds may be stirred as much as you please, and the more the better.” (Spurgeon)
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Six: Scoffing at the Scoffers (2 Peter 3:1–10)

Because God’s Word is true, we must pay attention to it and take its message seriously.

and Peter is a good example of one who knows what is to not remember the word of God....what did Jesus tell him....TALK, PREACH.....
the phrase PURE MINDS, means to have a clear, pure, unmixed, uncontaminated, focused and concentrating mind..
clear from unpure thoughts and wandering...
once a mind a been exposed to the light why would it want to dwell in the dark....TALK, PREACH......
Our pure minds should be on the WORDS of then....
2 Peter 3:2 “that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,”
Peter clearly believed that the words of Scripture were important; the words themselves
the words of God...
the very words that are beneficial to us...
let’s remember what Paul has said, 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,”
here in the text Peter is saying don’t overlook that emphasis in the Old Testament writings
because even in the old testament the prophets, told the people of the goodness of God, the coming of a saviour and the saviour dying for us and coming back for us....TALK,PREACH.....
some of us have been around the church for awhile....and the question arises, do you remember some of your old sunday school teaching....do you remember some of the Pastors old sermons…TALK, PREACH......
our pure minds should be on the words of today as well......
2 Peter 3:2 “that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,”
By placing the messengers of the new covenant on the same level as the messengers of the old covenant, Peter understood the authority of the New Testament, even as it was being formed.

Because he places his writings alongside those of the holy prophets, Peter is evidently aware of the inspiration of the Spirit flowing through him as surely as it had flowed through Isaiah and Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel.

I am not trying to put myself on the same level as Dr. Smith, Polk, Ball or Jenkins. But I am trying to preach and teach the same that they were preaching and teaching...
reputation is the key to remembering....
2 Peter Exposition

We contend for every word of the Bible, and believe in the verbal and plenary inspiration of Holy Scripture, believing indeed that there can be no other inspiration but that

TALK, PREACH.......

Conclusion...

Peter reminds us to remember to keep our MINDS on the WORDS of THEN and NOW…
all that has been taught to us..preached to us...
all that we have studied on our own...
we must remember...
Exalting Jesus in 2 Peter, Jude What We Need to Remember (3:2)

The Bible not only convinces us that Jesus is coming back; it compels us to live holy lives while we wait.

let me close this thing...
the song writer said, as i let my mind go back…i can see the little wooden church sitting by the railroad track....
i can see them sisters and brother..
those deacons and mission sister...
i can see and hear the choir marching and lifting their voice
i can see the ushers making you spit out your gum and fanning those in the spirit..
I can hear that old preacher, saying that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life...
but when I look at the church today, so much is missing...
but one thing i do know is that the word of God is still being preached...
i know that there are some still doing the work of an evangelist...
there are still some prayer warriors on the battle field...
i that the gospel is still being shouted...
oh let me help you remember...
TALK, PREACH, CLOSE......
