What Are We Asking With This Petition?
We are praying that God’s name would be regarded as holy.
Leviticus 22:32 “And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you,” (see Exodus 20:7)
Revelation 4:11 ““Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.””
Psalm 138:2 “I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.”
Understanding Our Need For the Lord’s Name to Be Hallowed
Understanding Our Need For the Lord’s Name to Be Hallowed
This is the first petition in the Lord’s prayer for a reason. It is of utmost importance.
We should pray that all people would see the great worth of the Lord, so He would be their greatest treasure. Then they would give Him the reverence and worship He deserves.
John 17:3 “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
See Matthew 13:44–46 and Psalm 73:25–26...
Mark 8:36 “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”
Psalm 16:11 “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

Praying For the Lord’s Name to Be Hallowed
We should pray that His people would regard His name as holy, so we don’t bring reproach to His great name among the lost.
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Romans 2:24 “For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.””
We should pray that lost people would hallow His name, before it is too late.
Malachi 1:11 “For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts.”
See Philippians 2:9–11...
