Who Is Jesus To You?
Who Is Jesus To You?
ZBC Sunday Morning 7-7-24
Turn with me please to Luke 9. I want to begin a series of sermons on being a servant.
Luke 9:18–20: “And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.”
Servant: slave; be in subjection or subserviency to.
To begin a series of sermons on being a servant, we need to begin with knowing Who it is that you are serving.
Here in our text, Jesus asks his disciples a simple question: But Whom say ye that I am?
I want to pose that same question to you this morning: But Whom say ye that Jesus is? Maybe we could word it this way: Who is Jesus to you?
Many people in today’s society may have many different ideas who Jesus is. Some say a prophet, some may say a good man. But Who is Jesus to you.
The answer to that question is a life and death answer!
Can I just take a moment to show you some of Who the bible says Jesus is?
In Genesis 3 Jesus is the One Who will break or crush the head of the serpent, Satan.
In Isaiah 9 Jesus is the Great Light in the darkness and He is the child that is born and the Son given. He is the One that has the government on His shoulders and He is the One called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father and The Prince of Peace.
In Isaiah 52 He is the Servant of God that Redeems His people without money. He is the Comforter of His people and their Salvation and He is the One that sprinkles many nations.
In Isaiah 53 Jesus is the One that was innocent but the One that bore our sorrows and griefs. He was the innocent One that was wounded and bruised and chastised for our sins and to bring us peace. By His stripes, by the beaten He took, we are healed from our sins. He is our Justifier!
In Matthew 1, Jesus is the child born to a virgin named Mary that came to save His people from their sins. He is Emmanuel which means God with us.
In Matthew 27, Jesus is the One that was beaten and crucified and hung on a cross with the sins of the world on Him.
In Matthew 28, Jesus is the One Who rose from the dead just like He said He would do, and all power was given to Him in heaven and earth, and He defeated death hell and the grave and because of that, as 1 Corinthians 15 says, we have victory in Jesus over our sins and are saved, if, as Romans 10 tells us, we confess Jesus with our mouth and believe in our hearts that all this happened!
In 2 Timothy 4 Jesus is the Judge of the living and the dead.
In Revelation 22, Jesus is the One that is coming quickly. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End!
All these things are Who Jesus is according to scripture, which is the truth.
But I ask you again, Who do you say Jesus is? Who is Jesus to you?
Peter answers the question well in our text.
Verse 20: He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.”
Christ: the Anointed One or the Messiah. The Anointed One of God.
Peter says You are the Messiah.
Is this your answer to the question. Better yet, is your answer to the question, “My Messiah.” It’s not enough for Jesus to be the Messiah, He has to be your Messiah. He has to be the Anointed One from God that you choose to serve. You have to become a servant of Jesus to be a child of God.
Look at Luke 9:23–24: “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.”
It’s a daily decision to follow Jesus, and if you decide to be a servant of Jesus, you will save your life! If you decide to not serve Jesus, you will lose your life; you will not go to heaven!
You are a servant to something.
Romans 6:16 : “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”
There is only 2 answers to Jesus’ question to his disciples: Yes Jesus is your Messiah or no Jesus is not your Messiah, and your life will show what that answer truly is to you!
We are called to be servants of Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:29–30: “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.”
Matthew 28:19–20: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
We are all called to be servants of God, but it is our choice whether or not we make Jesus our own Messiah.
Are you a servant of Jesus? Have you made Jesus your Messiah. Are you saved.
Are you His servant? Who do you say Jesus is?
