Matthew 12:38-42(KJV 1900)
Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it. And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear. And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king. Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.
Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
God is Sovereign. The first thing as christians we must understand is that God is Sovereign. The first topic we’ll focus on is how Jesus reacted in these situations when faced with a dilema. God is the problem solver. the promise keeper, the way maker and miricle worker. In the first bullet point we’ll focus on the verse where Jesus spoke greater is prophet Jonah is here and greater than king Solomon is here. in this vearse Jesus speaks a prophecy of whats to come. for three days and three nights Jonah was in the whales belly . After three days Jesus is risen from death, He conquered death, He conquered the grave. And like the men of Nineveh in the book of Jonah they repented fasted even the cattle and animals fasted. And the people turned from the evil, sinful ways and turned to God for forgiveness. Turning away for the secular world and seperateing from our old selves. when you have the Holy Spirit that dwells in you, you will hate the things God hates and love the things God loves. Greater is to come Jesus prophesied. And like the daughter of pharoah, the queen of the south came from a long distance, a great journey to hear the words and wisdom of Solomon the wisest mortal man in the Bible. A quick look into who Jonah and Solomon were shows us how they have acted and reacted when put in certain situations when they were put to the test.
Starting with Jonah when he was given a messege to deliver to the people of Nineveh from The Lord Thy God, what did Jonah do instead? Some of us a childeren learn this story, he ran the opposite way, he flead to Tarshish and then into Joppa. Joppa is a small harbor on the Mediterranean coast of Israel and boarded a ship to escape the task God has given him. Im sure Jonah is aware that God is the One who created the land air and seas, and reading that Jonah is running to the sea to flee from God, the one who created the sea shows us as readers and reminds us God is Sovereign. Our thoughts are not His thoughts, God knows what we’re gonna do before we do it, or even think it. The point we i want us all to ponder on today is, Jonah ran the opposite way when God gave him a task. When we look back at how things unfoled for Jonah, we see that when God wants things to happen they will happen every single time.
The garden of Gethsemane
in 1 Kings 3:5 The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and said to him, ask what should I give thee. Solomon as a young child soon becoming king of Israel after the passing of his father king David. Solomons response to the Lord is understaning heart to judge thy people that he may discern between good and bad for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? God searching his heart and seeing he is coming from a place of being genuine, The Lord was pleased. Solomon didin’t ask for wealth, long life, his enemies to be put down. Good judgement for God’s people fairness. The Lord gave Solomon with a wise and understaning heart that can discern with good judgement. Now the time came when two harlots approached the king and one of them said to Solomon this woman and myself live in the same house, the woman speaking delivered a child and three days later the other woman delivered a child as well. No one eles lived in this house and the woman speaking is convinced the other laid on top of the baby and accidently killed the child. Then the mother, the woman speaking said she went to feed the boy but he had no life and after futher view she realized it wasn’t even the child she gave birth to. In this dillema, how Solomon said “Bring me a sword” then he said “ Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other”. The woman who spoke pleaded the case to Solomon that yearned for her living child and said “give her the living child and no wise slay it” the fake mother saw it as a fair decision. but the real mother pleaded for the life of her child to the point she would rather give it up to the other than have it killed. After the true cards being revealed verse 27 Solomon says Give her the living child and no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.
