The Prayer of Jesus

Today open your Bibles to John Chapter 17
We have a very very special piece of Scripture in front of us this morning
It is titled “the HIGH PRIESTLY PRAYER”
I would be remiss if i didn’t clarify that this different then the LORDS PRAYER
Since we fight the battle of traditions here at Horizon so that we can TEACH RIGHTLY.
I read a survey Asking Christians what is the LORD’S Prayer
a significant portion started with “now i lay me down to sleep....”
the largest portion started “ My Father who art in heaven...”
a small portion started with “Father, my hour has come...”
so WHO is right?
Well maybe in a way they all are
The LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP peeps --- may very well not know the WORD but they now tradition.
If they are genuinely praying to Jesus --- then it is a PRAYER TO THE LORD
The MY FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN ---- are Learners and have repeated what they were taught
they are again not wrong BUT look at beginning of the verses ---
Luke 11:2–4 (ESV)
2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread,
4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”
Matthew 6:9–13 ESV
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
these are Jesus’s teaching on prayer to us ---
i would label it a TEACHING ON HOW TO PRAY
or Call it like many others THE DISCIPLES PRAYER
Look here is my biggest argument ----
lay me down --- not Scripture but useful
our Father --- is a teaching of Jesus to US — the Disciples
LOOK --- it cannot be a prayer of Jesus to Father LOOK AT verse 12
JESUS NEVER SINNED SO NO WAY THIS IS HIS PRAYER
The Prayer that JESUS PRAYED
TRULY THE LORD’S PRAYER here IN CHAP 17
It is the only Prayer we have full record of the WORDS IN PRAYER OF JESUS
We read that Jesus went away to pray ---
but we don’t know what He prayed
maybe a statement or so ----
we have recorded in Scripture little phrases like
Jesus prayed to the Father and said
Lazarus, Come out
or If it be your will, let this cup pass from me
BUT ch 17 is the capstone of ch. 13,14,15,16
Jesus is in upper room washing feet in ch 13
Telling us the WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE in ch 14
abiding in me as VINE and BRANCHES in ch 15
and teaching on the Holy Spirit
and sorrow turning to joy in ch 16
BUT-- NOW
Jesus has left the room and is walking with his disciples ---
teaching and teaching them
giving them commission to KEEP on going
Ch 17 is the END OF THE SERVICE THE END OF HIS TEACHING
AND SERMON MESSAGE
the Final Prayer
The final FOUR CHAPTERS 18-21 are full of teaching
but it is mostly historical and still normative
What i mean is it is FULLY TRUTH but
the RECORDED WORDS OF CHRIST are minimal
you have been studying over 5 chapters 13-17 which is RED LETTER — JESUS’s Word
This chapter maybe the MOST IMPORTANT IN THE BIBLE on Prayer
Jesus ensures that we left with ALL that we need in HIM
The disciple prayer is INSTRUCTIVE ---- Our Father who art in Heaven...
This Prayer of JESUS in CH 17 is modeling
Last week we ended with Jesus’s Word that i have OVERCOME THE WORLD
Then He issues this prayer.....
John 17:1–5 (ESV)
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
This Prayer is given on the night before HIS crucifixion
There is completion of the verse in John 12:28
John 12:28 ESV
28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
Even John 7:18
John 7:18 ESV
18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.
John 17 is >>>>>
This is the final teaching of JESUS on this earth The final class for Disciples
__________________________
They left the upper room.
They have walked to the city of Jerusalem.
And as they’re walking, He continues His instruction to them,
full of promises, full of pledges, and full of warnings,
and full of threats.
He tells them that He is leaving,
He will die,
He will rise,
and He will go back to the Father.
He is promising them everything they will ever need.
All the resources of heaven will be at their disposal through prayer.
They will know the truth because
He will send the Holy Spirit
who will bring them the truth.
He is promising them peace and love and joy and every virtue.
But as He stands on the brink of His own death,
the disciples are afraid, worried, full of doubt, anxiety.
They can’t even imagine a world without the Lord they had been with for three years.
and
We need to look at a WORD....

Glory

So important that Jesus FIVE times in these verses
WRITE THAT WORD in your NOTES PLEASE
so what is Glory
Glory is synonymous with fame, renown, praise, ambition, boasting
Glory is the noun in the NEW TESTAMENT that deeply means to
BRING HONOR to GOD
TO BRING HONOR TO THE LORD
we don’t use that word much in our culture unless we are at CHURCH
which i assume makes it a CHURCHY WORD
my Grandfather would use it
teaching me to Honor my family and my Country
to stand at attention — to remove my hat — to place my hand over my heart during our national anthem
To be humble, quiet, and attentive in PRAYER TIME
To live my life to HONOR
to Bring GLORY and not SHAME
We was teaching me to think and ACT in a way that would not bring
anything BAD or defamatory to our family name
My grandfather didn’t want our family name to ring in history with negative
WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT OUR CHRISTIAN LIFE IS THE SAME
TO LIVE TO BRING GLORY AND NOT SHAME TO OUR CHRIST OUR LORD
GLORY the
the et·y·mol·o·gy
Glory is an old latin word Gloria --- and translated to French as Glorie to our word today Glory
In the OLD TESTAMENT--
Glory is used to describe the manifestation of God's presence as perceived by humans according to the Abrahamic religions.
The important word glory is used five times in these verses, and we must carefully distinguish the various “glories” that Jesus mentions.
In John 17:5, He referred to His preincarnate glory with the Father, the glory that He laid aside when He came to earth to be born, to serve, to suffer, and to die.
In John 17:4, He reported to the Father that His life and ministry on earth had glorified Him, because He (Jesus) had finished the work the Father gave Him to do.
In John 17:1 and 5, our Lord asked that His preincarnate glory be given to Him again, so that the Son might glorify the Father in His return to heaven.
The word glory is used eight times in this prayer,
so it is an important theme for the next three weeks of Lessons

My Hours has Come

The Bible Exposition Commentary (Chapter Eighteen: The Prayer of the Overcomer (John 17))
“Father, the hour is come,” reminds us of the many times in John’s Gospel when “the hour” is mentioned, beginning at John 2:4.
Jesus had lived on a “divine timetable” while on earth and He knew He was in the will of the Father. “My times are in Thy hand” (Ps. 31:15).
We have heard Jesus says MY TIME HAS NOT COME
BUT it is NOW HERE
THE HOUR HAS COME
it is the night we will be arrested, interrogated,
jailed, ridiculed and beaten
all to end up on that CROSS tomorrow.
I ask you to READ through this prayer in your study time this week
I ask you to think about this prayer of Jesus
Should it be a litmus test on our CHRISTIAN WALK
Should we live or life so that at the end of our time on earth
WE COULD PRAY THIS...
Should we live our life differently knowing that this is our CAPSTONE to our mission on earth
I must confess in my time this week and performing a funeral on Friday
my thought was examining --- I Pause, Prayed, Pondered...
could I?
Would I
be able to pray this to GOD the Father - COULD I MAKE IT MY PRAYER
Dear Father — my time on earth is done
May you glorify me in heaven
I pray that i glorified you on this earth
Father you granted me authority on this earth in my family, children and church
Father did i learn to GLORIFY YOU and not me
Did i GO and make Disciples, DID i baptize them in your name, DID i Teach them in the ways of Righteousness?
Did i help others to know you? THE ONLY GOD — THE ONLY CHRIST
Did i teach others and stand FIRM in that you are the WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE
Father I pray that i Glorified YOU on earth
having accomplished the WORK that you called me to do
and NOW Father bring me into YOUR GLORY in HEAVEN
may my life now move to being FULLY in your PRESENCE
Father --- can i stand before you and HEAR
WELL DONE
PRAYER:
Father ----
