recap
if you have not struggled with the first two, well more than likely struggle with this one…
Today—talk about one of the biggest MH problems So common our culture—Often overlooked—Completely ignored.
According—The World Health Org—Americans have a bigger prob w/ this issue than people in any other country of world.
Most affluent society in the world is The most WORRY-filled society in the world! We win!
According to Barna Research
• About 60% of adults in the United States struggle with
worry and stress daily.
which means that looking at these percentages applying it to this room over half of you are not even really listening to this message because your worrying about something…
Why is it that so many of us find ourselves battling with worry.
I wanna try to unpack it for you today, and tell you at its core, it's because of our sin nature.
Because we're born as sinners, we tend to default toward fear, instead of defaulting toward faith.
i will prove this two you = not up at 2am figuring out how to manage all the peace and joy in your life
If you're awake at 2:00 AM, you're probably worried about your kids, or some kinda health issue of you or somebody you love, or job stress, finances…
not joy and peace…
maybe its bigger like wars, terrorism, division within our country, the election…the price of sweet tea in the stores…joke on this…
We live in a culture where worry is almost just a commonly accepted part of life that we pas it off…
now we talked about anxiety already so you might be wondering why worry? are they not related? (maybe joke about the cousin thing)
What’s the difference between anxiety and worry?
Related. Overlap. but they are Different—now im No expert—and this might be an Oversimplification but…
• We tend to experience worry in our minds.
• We generally experience anxiety in our bodies.
Worry is often—Specific—Anxiety generally—Broad.
Example…WORRY might miss a flight—ANXIOUS traveling.
speak on this…
so today I dont want us to just simply pass worry off as if its another limb we just carry around = christ like and christ teaches us how not to be worried…
for this we are turning to Matthews gospel = we covered this in Lukes but i want us to go to Matthews and read his account on this
and what we will see is jesus actually covers 5 of the biggest topics most of us worry about.
• Finances
• Food
• Fitness
• Fashion
• Future
we will be in Matthew chapter 6 verse 25 today and we will be going through some of the verses in this passage
and in here i love it because as always jesus tell us not to fall to something, no to do something, but he also shows us how not to fall to it or not to do it…
lets look at Matt 6.25
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
talk briefly about anxious here and worry
the word therefore = whats it there for…
look to the verse before this
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Jesus says—Don’t worry about finances—Can’t love both God & money.
So don’t overly focus on & obsess about money—
lets look at Verse 25 again…
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
preach on this
jesus tells us not to worry about food he has us…
not to worry about our body (over focused on fitness) or clothes (fashion)…
dont worry about what people think about you…
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
preach on not worrying about future…
now i love it because this is where jesus starts showing is how not to worry
remember jesus doesnt just tell us not to do something he shows us how not to do something…
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
preach
tell story of pastor joseito and Washington dc…
now you might be saying ok im not going to worry about this stuff = does that mean i sit and do nothing
dont worry about my future so i do nothing??
there is a real difference between worry and concern…
and Jesus illustrates the difference here for us with the birds…
lets look…
Concern focuses on challenges and moves you to action.
You think—My marriage is struggling—Concern—Get counseling.
Gained 12 pounds—Concern—Cut back on soft drinks.
Concern focuses on challenges and moves you to action.
Worry focuses on what’s beyond our control and results in
inaction.
your Stewing w/o doing—That’s why Jesus asks the question in vs 27
And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
You worry—Nothing gets better! Your mental health gets worse. = preach on it…
Birds don’t worry! And birds don’t sit around doing nothing!
Birds don’t wait for God drop food in laps—Don’t have laps. (joke)
Get up—Fly around—Find a worm—Eat—Fly around—Sleep.
Don’t hear chirp-chirp-chirp at night—Asleep!
Never see a bird awake—Pacing nest—Rubbing wings asking
Think supply chain problem going to result in shortage of worms?
When we’re worrying—We’re basically saying,
God—I don’t really trust you!
God—I don’t trust your plan!
God—I don’t believe you are with me!
God—I’m not sure you are really good!
preach
remember we talked about this once before
What you worry about most reveals where you trust God
the least.
What is it for you?
Relationship? Health concern? Financial fear? Personal insecurity?
You won’t measure up? Not good enough? Don’t have what it takes?
here is what we do when we are having a hard time, when we are worrying about areas we need to be trusting God in…
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Seek him 1st
—Pursue him—Pray—Press—Eyes—All things given.
Your job is to—Put God first in your life—Is he? Really?
1st day?—1st finances?—1st in relationships - 1st in your dreams and plans??
preach
pray
HOLY SPIRIT TAKE OVER…
