WE SINNED. We all chose to disobey God. The Bible calls this sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’s punishment of death.
Romans 3:23
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
BIBLE STORY
Daniel 1 Daniel is Taken to Babylon
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and surrounded it.
The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the things of the house of God.
The king placed these things in the treasury of his god.
Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief officer, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility,
young men without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, able to learn, and competent to stand in the king’s palace, to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.
The king gave them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and wine that he drank.
They were taught for three years, and at the end of the three years they were to stand before the king.
Among these young men were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.
The king’s chief officer gave them names: Daniel would be called Belteshazzar, Hananiah was called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.
Daniel’s Faithfulness
Daniel decided that he would not make himself unclean with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank.
Daniel asked the chief officer to allow him not to become unclean,
And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief officer,
the chief officer said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who gave you your food and your drink; why should he see that you were in worse condition than the other youth of your own age?
Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief officer had placed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
“Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.
Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youth who eat the king’s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the other youth who ate the king’s food.
So the steward took away their food and wine, and gave them vegetables.
As for these four young men, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom,
Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
When the king commanded that they be brought in to him, the chief officer brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found to be like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king.
And in every matter of wisdom and understanding the king would look to them for answers, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom.
Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,”
and he will make straight your paths.
