PSALMS 1

Psalm 1:1–6 (NKJV) 1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.

3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

I believe that Psalm 1 is a Psalm of blessings to the person who willing to give God first place in their lives.

Remember we’re not blessed just because we hear the word, but it’s when we do it, when we apply it to life.

James 1:22–25 (NLT) 22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.

24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

Jesus gave us a perfect picture of what this man is like.

Luke 6:46–49 (NKJV) 46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? 47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.

49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

Ok, let’s begin

Psalm 1:1 (NKJV) 1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

I like the way that the Amplified Bible bring’s this verse out.

Psalm 1:1 (AMP) 1 BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.

Psalm 1:1 (MSG) 1 How well God must like you— you don’t hang out at Sin Saloon, you don’t slink along Dead-End Road, you don’t go to Smart-Mouth College.

You see in this first verse how to have a Blessed life. 3 steps.

Walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

Look at the way it goes with sin. First your walking, minding your own business, then you stop and stand or look at or listen and then you sit and get totally into it.

Don’t hang around sin, do like Joseph did in Gen 39:12, He ran.

Psalm 1:2 (NKJV) 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.

During David’s time, when this was written, the only Word of God the people had was what was called “the Law.” This was what we now know as the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). But now we have the whole canon of Scripture, which comprises the Word of God. So, for us, David’s statement here is not limited to just the first five books of the Bible. David was placing a blessing on those whose delight is in the Word of God and those who meditate in it day and night.

So we can say, the person that is blessed is the one that give’s God’s word first place.

After the children left the wilderness and Moses died, the mantle was given to Joshua and what was God’s first instructions to him.

Joshua 1:1–9 (NKJV) 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying:

2 “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel.

3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.

4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.

5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.

6 Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.

8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

So we see here that even though Joshua was very busy God still wanted him to succeed and the way to do that was to meditate or ponder God’s word.

Meditation is taking a truth that we read in Scripture and thinking on it over and over (revolving it in the mind) until we see its fulfillment or truth in our imaginations.

Psalm 1:3 (NKJV) 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

Notice that it says, Rivers, not just a river.

God has many ways of blessing this person that put’s Him 1st in their lives.

Does God wants us to prosper, well I need to go to scripture and not man’s opinion.

3 John 2 (NKJV) 2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

But what is true prosperity:

I believe that true prosperity is in this order:

Spiritually Mentally Physically Socially Financially

When we keep things in order, then when we are blessed with things, then things don’t have us.

You will know the true spiritual state of a person by, when they are blessed with things in life, do they still serve God, do they still keep God in first place in their lives.

Psalm 1:4–5 (NKJV) 4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

The ungodly are around for a little bit and then gone.

Psalm 1:6 (NKJV) 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

God know’s our ways and He loves to bless those who are willing in this life to give Him first place.

God knew Abraham and He know’s us.

Genesis 18:19 (NKJV) 19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”

As we end this amazing Psalm, remember it’s as we get hungry for God, He will fill us up.

Matthew 5:6 (NKJV) 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.

hMatthew 5:6 (AMP) 6 Blessed and fortunate and happy and spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied!
