Matthew’s chronology followed a logical order as he presented the evidence for the messiahship of Yeshua of Nazareth. The early chapters of his gospel deal with the preparations for the King, whereas the Sermon on the Mount reveals the precepts of Messiah. We now come to a section that is vitally important to the Jewish mind, i.e., proofs to substantiate the words of Yeshua. It is one thing to claim to be a messiah. It is quite another to offer tangible, physical evidence to validate those claims. This certainly would have been a central focus of the rabbinic leadership of the first century, as they were the ones called to discern truth from error. Many false messiahs had tried to capture Israel’s attention over the years. The rabbis therefore developed certain criteria based on the Scriptures for how to recognize the true Mashiach when he appears. Matthew, as a traditional Jew, makes note of some of the actions of Yeshua and how they strongly support his claims of being the King of Israel.
