Man of Valor, man of Faith

Hebrews 11:32 “And what more shall I say? For time would fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets.”
Key Themes
Jeptha/Yiftach had faith, not in himself, but in God
Relationship to God
Making and Keeping a vow to God
Vow from Hannah to God because she was barren

1 Samuel 1:10

10While her soul was bitter, she prayed to ADONAI and wept.

1 Samuel 1:11

11So she made a vow and said, “ADONAI-Tzva’ot, if You will indeed look upon the affliction of Your handmaid, remember me and not forget Your handmaid, but grant Your handmaid a son, then I will give him to ADONAI all the days of his life and no razor will ever touch his head.”

Keeping an Oath

2Whenever a man makes a vow to ADONAI or swears an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he is not to violate his word but do everything coming out of his mouth.

Keeping an Oath

34But I tell you, do not swear at all—not by heaven, for it is the throne of God; 35or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37But let your word ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’—anything more than this is from the evil one.”
