The Ancient Paths
The Ancient Paths
Discussion: Why do you think our culture tends to discount the old?
What does the Bible say about the “ancient paths?”
16 Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
God tells Israel to ask for the ancient paths and walk in them
They do not, and disaster looms (6:19ff.)
15 But my people have forgotten me; they make offerings to false gods; they made them stumble in their ways, in the ancient roads, and to walk into side roads, not the highway,
God calls idolatry “stumbl[ing]… in the ancient roads”
People forget God
People trip over righteousness
People abandon the high way for the “side roads”

13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.
14 And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.”
33 as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”
8 and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
28 Do not move the ancient landmark that your fathers have set.
Precept: we cannot live by our own standards; we must maintain the standards set before us
Jesus: the “Heaven Expert”
Jesus: the “Heaven Expert”
Jesus was a native of Heaven (Masterwork Summer 2024, 98)
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
V. 33-58 detail Jesus as the bread of life, sent from heaven to feed the starving people of Israel and the world with food that satisfies forever
13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.
Son of Man
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Resurrection: The Proof of Jesus’s Authority
Resurrection: The Proof of Jesus’s Authority
15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
“Rulers and authorities” - demonic influences in centers of power
Discussion: How does Jesus “disarm” the rulers and authorities?
Discussion: How did the resurrection affect the disciples?
55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me.
56 But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.
29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,
33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
The resurrection was enough to change their outlook.
How Does Heaven Impact Today?
How Does Heaven Impact Today?
“Knowledge about heaven does us no good if we don’t have the right to live there for eternity ourselves” (Masterwork, 101).
Sadducees set up Jesus by asking him about a woman who married seven brothers:
29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God:
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”
33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
Heaven is not for the dead!
6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready;
8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
Heaven is not for the celibant.
47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
Heaven is not for the future.
“We don’t go to heaven to find Christ—we go to Christ to find heaven” (Masterwork, 104).
Follow-up: Read Matthew 13. How does Jesus describe heaven in this chapter? How does each of these descriptions change the way you live today?
