Who do you say Jesus is luke 22-23
INTRO
Q. who do you say Jesus is?
As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.” Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.” And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
Jesus has been arrested
beaten
accused
and as mourning sun rises on this day we call good Friday…
in actuality it is one of the saddest days of all time
Jesus is brought before the religious leaders
in Jerusalem
thing of a court room setting
Here Jesus is on trial
As they ask ---are you the christ
are you the messiah that has been prophesied ?
the messiah that will save Israel
Jesus replies with this
If I tell you your going to deny it
its like someone who
no matter what you say
they will not believe you or change their mind
they are stuck in their ways
Jesus tells them your mind is made up
there is nothing I can say that will convince you to let me go
but listen here
after you kill me
as he refers to Himself as the son of man
this is a messianic prophecy
as in Daniel 7:13
“I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him.
Jesus is saying I am the messiah
and after you kill me
I will be seated at the right hand of God
The religious leaders want Jesus to be more specific as they ask again
Are you the Son of God
now earlier in His ministry
Jesus heals a lame man on the sabbath
and this is the reaction of the pharisees
When Jesus called God His father
But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.
The Pharisees wanted to kill Jesus
His whole ministry
because He made himself equal to God
They wanted Him dead for blasphemy
This is where we are confronted with the person of Jesus
our existance and destiny depends on what you think about Jesus
some think He is a good teacher but not God ------muslims, most people…
but this Makes Jesus a Liar
Some think He is a nut Job and blasphemor------jews, pharisees
and others like us believe He is the Son of God ---Christians
‘Jesus claims to be God throughout scripture
Q. Who do you say that Jesus is
your life will completely change when you answer this question...
Who is Jesus.
When you come to the conclusion that He is the son of God
the only right response is to give Him your life
But why is it that the pharisees would not believe Him..
He did miricales
His teaching were obvious truth
He fullfilled over 300 prophecies
It is so blantantly obvious that Jesus is the messiah
How could anyone deny it ....
The answer is our first point
Dont harden your heart against God

The religious leaders mind was made up
HARD HEARTS
stuck in their ways
lazarus and the rich young man — go to my family --- they wouldnt believe even if an angel came to them
HArd Heart leads to ----UNWILLINGNESS to REPENT
Sometimes we can have a hard heart
Some of us have a hard time turning away from sin
we are stubborn
and unwilling to admit that we need to change...
Q. Where is your heart hard towards God
It may be with a certain sin
you know its wrong but you keep doing it
eventually
you dont even feel bad about it
and each time you sin the heart gets a bit harder to the sin
until you are blantantly in rebellion against your savior…
some people havent even made the decision to follow Jesus
Each time they are confronted with the opportunity to turn their life over to Him
they harden their heart
and walk away
If you keep hardening your heart to God
it will not end well
In exodus it says 7 times that pharoh hardened His heart and would not let the Israelites Go
God ended up killing the firstborn of every egyptian in order to soften the heart
The pharisees and religious leaders heart was so hard to God
that they were willing to kill His son
We live in a culture where
peoples hearts are cold towards God
For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.’
If your heart is hard today
turn to Jesus that it would be healed
ask him for forgivness
and understand
He is God
He loves you
and He is worthy to be worshiped
lets move into ch 23
Then the whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate. And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.” Then Pilate asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” He answered him and said, “It is as you say.” So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no fault in this Man.” But they were the more fierce, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.” When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
After The jewish council has had their way with Jesus
they bring Him to the Roman Govenor Pilate
Jerusalem under Roman authority
They try to pin Jesus against ceaser
in attempt to get pilate to rule in favor of execution
in hindsight Jesus was claiming kingship over ceaser
Pilate falls into the category of one who believes Jesus was just a man
He asks Him, Are you the king of the Jews
Jesus replies basically yea
Pilate is like ok well IDK what to do,
Have you ever been in a situation thats like..... this is not my problem
why am I in the middle of this
Thats pilate right now
He tells the mob
bring Him to the jewish ruler over the region of gallilea
I dont want to be bothered with this
So they bring Jesus to Herod
He was the son of Herod the great
who was king over Israel when Jesus was born
Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.
Herod was excited to see Jesus
because He heard about all of the miricales
and all the great things He did in His ministry
When Jesus was brought to Him
He was disappointed
because He was expecting something else
pursue Christ for who He is not for what He can do
pursue Christ for who He is not for what He can do
Herod wanted to experience Christ as if He was an entertainment option
As if Christ was a court jester
and this is what the church does in many ways today
Come to the circus so you can experience the miracle of Jesus
When in reality
We need to come to the alter and bow in repentance
and in tears for His mercy and love to sinners
When you have the hear of Herod you seek Jesus for what He can do
Why did Herod want to meet Jesus?
so He could see something cool.
Many people pursued Jesus because of His miricale working power
yet they didnt stay faithful to Jesus
because their faith was in the miricales not in the miricale maker
Jesus had fed 5k
He crossed over the sea
and the next day all the people travled and found Him
and asked when did you come here
instead Jesus told them why they came
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
Jesus tells them you didnt come here
because you understood I am the son of God
but you came because you saw a miricale
and you want me to do it again and feed you
Jesus goes on to tell them I am the bread of life
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
Jesus is teaching them who He is
and why He came
After He taught them about His purpouse
in giving up His body to be sacraficed
and the need for you to recieve it by faith
many people turned their back on Him
They left Him because they were pursuing what Jesus could do for them instead of
who He was
and why He came
He came to be a sacrafice for sinners
He came to die on the cross and raise again the third day
and He has called you to die to yourself and follow Him by faith

thats not what many people are trying to sell you
many people want to sell you come to Jesus and your problems will go away
story---customer who had lukemia ,
she went to a jesus culture concert
went to churches that told her
your miricale is waiting for you
you need more faith
She was never healed and her faith started to diminish worse
it wasnt a ministry of life it was a false gospel
that Jesus wants you happy healthy and prosperous.....
Her problems didnt go away and she fell away from church
because Jesus didnt give her her miricale
Jesus didnt give a miricale to Herod either
Jesus didnt give me a miricale when I asked him in faith
Jesus doesnt give miricales out like oprah guys
Jesus is not you personal geanie....
Finishing off
Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.
Jesus was not going to be the dog and pony show
He wasnt going to do a miricale just because
Herod told Him to
and when Herod saw Jesus was not who he wanted him to be
he sent him off and mocked Him
Guys
it is vitaly important to develop a relationship with the Jesus of the bible
You need to ask yourself
How well do I know Jesus
His Character, His nature, His purpouse.
this is why theology matters
Q. Who is Jesus to you
If you believe He is the son of God
do everything in your power to get to know Him better
