Conquering in Combat (1 Samuel 17:48-58)

David’s Devotion (48-50)

David’s Running (48) (David’s Part)
1 Corinthians 9:24–26 “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:”
David’s Rock (49) (God’s Part)
These methods may seem strange and inadequate to the world, but faith always works!
Psalm 18:2 “The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
Psalm 18:31 “For who is God save the Lord? Or who is a rock save our God?”
Psalm 18:46–48 “The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; And let the God of my salvation be exalted. It is God that avengeth me, And subdueth the people under me. He delivereth me from mine enemies: Yea, thou liftest me up above those that rise up against me: Thou hast delivered me from the violent man.”
David’s Reaping (50) (David Prevailed)
Reap = to obtain as the fruit of labor
Galatians 6:7–9 “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Though David didn’t obtain anything physically or materially, his devotion gave honor and glory to God. God gave him the desires of his heart!

Giant’s Defeat (49-52)

Giant’s Shrinking (49)
stone sunk in his forehead and fell upon his face (who’s the giant now???)
Christ will be exhalted!
Philippians 2:9–11 “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Giant’s Slicing (51)
Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
Thou shalt bruise his heel = Calvary
It shall bruise thy head = End of Millennial Reign
Revelation 20:1–3 “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”
Revelation 20:7–10 “And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
The best way to kill a serpent is to step on it’s head! Christ will one day get rid of Satan forever!
Giant’s Soldiers (51)
Once their champion died, they ran away. They realized who the real champion was.
In the presence of the real champion (Christ) sin’s soldiers and seducing spirits know they don’t have a chance and they flee!
No more death, no more curse, no more sin!

Israel’s Determination (52-54)

Their Stepping Up (52)(Arose)
Because of one man’s faith, determination, and reliance, Israel decided to step into the battle.
How are you influencing others? Are you living a dedicated Christian life or a defeated Christian life?
Their Shout (52 (Shout)
In the Hebrew means “to shout a war cry, to sound a signal for war.”
They made it loud and clear that they are going on the offensive.
They didn’t ask if it was ok.
They didn’t guess if they were going to offend them.
They didn’t ask if their tactics were ok with them.
THEY JUST WENT TO WAR!
Their Seeking (52) (Pursue)
Jude 3–4 “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost!
Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish:”
Know what’s right, what’s wrong, what to do, and what not to do, and FIGHT!
Their Story (51)
The Philistines saw their champion dead. Israel saw their champion dead too. When Israel saw the giant defeated, THEN they got determined to fight.
We know how the story ends. WE WIN! Yet there’s not many that gets in the fight.
If you knew you were going to hit the buzzer beater at the end of the game to win, would you sit down?
If you knew you were going to catch the game winning pass at the end of the game to win, would you sit on the sideline?
WE WILL WIN. OUR CHAMPION WILL WIN FOR US!
Their Souvenirs (53-54)
The children of Israel spoiled the Philistines’ tents. David took Goliath’s head back to Jerusalem.
While this may seem like an awful and hideous thing to do, is was a reminder to everyone what happens to those who defy God.
People parade sin around as being fun, attractive, and beautiful. We need some memorials around the world of showing what happens when sin abounds: Death. When someone defies God, it kills them.

Saul and Abner’s Denial (55-58)

Saul should’ve known his harpist and Abner should’ve known his soldier. In battle, ignorance is everywhere. (new age church worship, focusing on shield bearer instead of Goliath, false religions, etc.)
David wasn’t considered about accolades or attention, but action. David wasn’t considered about rewards, but his responsibility to God.
What would’ve happened if the leader of Israel and the leader of Israel’s army praised him and given him a ton of recognition? (Doing the right things for the wrong reasons is still wrong)
David had been in the midst of both leaders, yet they forgot him. Yet, the most important person did not forget him. God sees you battle.
