Romans 5:11

The word atonement occurs 81 times in the King James Bible.
80 times in the Old Testament.
1 time in the New Testament.
In the Old Testament “atonement” means - to cover:
1st occurrence is Exodus 29:33
In the New Testament “atonement” means - covered:
Here are the Bible TRUTHS concerning atonement.

I. The Promise Of The Atonement.

The first mention of the atonement. Genesis 3:15
The Old Testament shadows of the atonement.
When God made coats of skin He foreshadowed the atonement. Genesis 3:21
The sacrifice of the Passover. 1 Corinthians 5:7

II. The Person Of The Atonement.

His must be the central figure.
In the OT the high priest was the central figure.
In the New Testament Jesus Christ is the great High Priest.
He had to be without sin.
He had to be clean. Leviticus 16:4, 24
The sacrifice had to be without blemish. Leviticus 4:3
Jesus had to be without spot or blemish. Hebrews 4:15
C. He had to identify with mankind. John 1:14; Hebrews 2:17

III. The Plan Of The Atonement.

The plan was not to put off for another year, but to cover permanently. Romans 3:25
The sacrifice of Christ established the new covenant.
Hebrews 9:15

IV. The Purpose Of The Atonement.

It includes Reconciliation.
Romans 5:10; 2 Corinthians 5:19
It includes Propitiation.
1 John 2:2
“propitiation” - the atonement or atoning sacrifice offered to God to assuage his wrath and render him propitious to sinners. Christ is the propitiation for the sins of men. Rom 3. 1 John 2
It includes Redemption. Colossians 1:14
It includes Justification. Romans 3:28

V. The Power Of The Atonement.

The Atonement conquered sin. Matthew 1:21
The Atonement cleanses sin. 1 John 1:7
