1 Sam 17:37-40
And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail,
and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” So David put them off.
Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.

The story of David and the exchange with Saul lends itself to the subject of Ties or more specifically Soul Ties and the restrictions they bring into our lives
This section of scripture we see a very subtle attempt by Saul to forge a Soul Tie that would have changed David’s Trajectory for the rest of His life
The difficult nature of the Ties is that they can be both good and bad we have the obligation to discern between the two.
Take a look
David faces some criticism just to get to the point where he can fight the giant
He is sure that the God who has kept him until now will give him the victory.
His ability is further questioned by people in authority
Then Saul who had lost the kingdom a few chapters before this makes attempt to keep his power
the armor was not tested by David so he took it off and chose to walk as the Lord had led. Toxic ties lead to codependency on people things situations and even animals
Ties can either lead to a toxic codependency or a flourishing interdependence in our Christian walk

Identifying Ties
Identifying Ties
As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
Too often we think ties are sexual in nature and while this is partially true there are other ties that are not sexual
Marriage
Friendship
Work
worldly
religious
trauma
moral/ethical injuries
These ties are in need of Ministration to the Soul
Johnathan and David share a covenantal relationship
loved as his own soul… it is out of love that we forge ties
v.4 the exchange is seen
Armor-robe of honor; military vestments; protective gear; fighting attire
Sword - physical and spiritual weapons of warfare
Bow - Potency and power…ability to send arrows; words… children…
Belt - utility belt to hold implements of war, made of precious material
v.5 caused to have success
have insight
get wisdom
gain understanding
be prudent
be skilled
have the capacity to receive all of these
implying the result of proper teaching … sitting under someones teaching can create a tie
Toxic Ties
Toxic Ties
Saul knows his time has come and gone. None of his heirs will take the throne… of course in his human reason there must be a way
The promise of his first daughter Merab (God will increase) for the man who slays Goliath and riches now appears but a distant memory
Saul is expecting a dowry which is made known to us after Saul offers his second daughter
Count out how many times Saul has made an effort on David
Brings David into his service to quench the evil spirit
Attempts to place his armor on David
In 1 Sam 18:2 Saul takes him and does not allow him to return home
but he served honorably?
In v. 13 Saul appoints David as Commander of a thousand
v. 17 Offers Merab,
be a Son of Valor and fight the Lord’s battles for me
Finally in;
Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time, “You shall now be my son-in-law.”
In lesser words, you’re either going to be for me or you will die
We miss the fact the dowry was paid the day Goliath fell. Yet, he will be asked to do something detestable
not just slay 100 philistines but take their foreskin
make him unfit for service
Toxic ties will eventually be your death, when they stay in place they become your disqualifiers in service.
your debt was paid on the cross
The toxic tie is a snare to the believer it is the progression of the restraint.
That is, a restraint does not need your consent but a tie does.
As you enter into a covenant with another (you now are acting as they) you have become one with them.
This will lead to one more progression before there is a turnover…
Reasons for the Toxic Ties
Reasons for the Toxic Ties
Saul in 1 Sam 16:21 Loved David and used him as an armor-bearer
We’ve talked about flirting with sin and things the Lord has not called us into… notice in as much as we say oh David wanted to just fight the Lord’s battle’s
in 17:20 David leaves the assignment of tending to his brothers in hearing the commotion
in the next 8 verses is wanting to hear what will be done for the one that overcomes the giant
careful whose giants you are fighting
There are times we are being readied for a major assignment and are found in haste to complete it
There are no skipping steps in the Lord.
Saul needed a champion, David wanted to be seen.
Saul no longer has the anointing David has the fullness of the anointing
The reality is that David did not need Saul it would simply be to wait until the appointed time
***It’s my anointing and I want it now***
Saul saw God was with David
Saul saw the way the Lord used David
Saul was afraid of David
after trying to kill him
he set a tie (snare) for him to be either killed or be bound by service in marriage to his daughter
How toxic was the relationship:
Saul in his human effort was trying to subvert the will of God
David in his rational was trying to fulfill the will of God
As you read on this toxic tie would lead years of pursuit and abuse
Toxic Ties Lead to Irrational Behavior
Toxic Ties Lead to Irrational Behavior
Best noted in the Story of the violation of Dinah by Shechem in Gen 34 and his behavior
Shechem (while we are not made aware of his thoughts) sees her makes her his (Object of desire)
we take by force even if it was to be at some point we take it against any reason
Seized, lay with, humiliated her
He is made to cleave to her…where have we heard that (Soul Tie created)
the soul tie is created
you not only came into agreement with the restraint, you acted on it
Soul longs for Gen 34:8
you can not get over it… it plays on eternal repeat
you almost obsess over it
you feel like you can’t live without it
Willing to give anything for it Gen 34:11
Willing to do anything for it Gen 34:12
Shechem is ultimately slaughtered… that toxic tie you are carrying is on an assignment to destroy you
Breaking with Toxic Ties
Breaking with Toxic Ties
All of us at some point have yielded ground to toxic ties in our lives that have sought to change us…
Even in our faith walk we have had those who saw our anointing tried to use it… they could not
So they tried to steal it, and could not
Today they will stop at nothing to see your assignment in the Lord destroyed
IN building a Soul Tie You made a conscious decision to carry out the actions of the covenant you will have to make a decision to sever the tie.
Understand the codependencies toxic ties make are diametrically opposed to what God intended
According to Rom 12:3-6 and Eph 4:11-16 we are to love and serve one another building each other up into the fullness of the Kingdom
There is an interdependence in our life which says none is above another and each is essential to the Lord
Understand there is a covenant with the Lord that according to Hosea is a tie which is found in His love for us.
You fulfilled the obligations of the toxic covenant, you must walk out the Covenant in Christ
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.
Dwell in the shelter of the Most High
Abide in the shadow of the Almighty
Command the soul to declare
My Refuge and my Fortress,
My God
in whom I trust
Then He will deliver you from the snare, from that toxic tie, your debt has already been paid.
And just as the Psalmist declared in Psalm 124:7-8
We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped!
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
We have an escape… that escape has a name… His name is Jesus
