One reason atheist think Christians are Stupid!!!

Introduction

I will begin with a short explanation for writing of this book. I like many Christians have struggled with understanding the “end times” that is popular in today’s Christianity. I came to Christ in 2009 and was dropped into the mainline overall understanding by default. It was never something that was really talked about much or really taught, however everyone just kinda “knew” the highlights. (Rapture, Tribulation, Anti Christ etc)
As I began my journey in Scripture reading I always tried to reconcile what was being suggested at but never could get it. I thought I was stupid. So I avoided the topic if it ever came up, I chalked it up to “I am just not understanding correctly what I am reading”.
Several years later the Eschaton “end time” questions started to bug me a little so I had to dig in and do some real study. I started with what I was taught was correct view and began to work through the Scriptures. After some time I was concerned because now I really felt dumb. A friend turned me on to some lectures for the some of the most popular views along with the opposition to those views. After much reading and watching debates I started to firm up my view. I knew where I was going to stake my flag, even though I still wouldn’t argue or debate the position, but at least I no longer felt dumb and could at least throw out a couple sentences before opting out of the conversation with a gracious “panmil” (it’ll pan out in the end to the glory of God) type sentiment. I was comfortable there for several years. I trusted God and constantly reminded myself I didn’t have to fully understand.
It’s OK to not get it or fully understand. I still don’t understand every detail. But today I am happy to say I have what I feel is a consistent Biblical understanding of what the scripture teaches. This is a glorious thing to behold and has aided in firming up my faith and my reverence for the Most High God.
What I hope to accomplish with this writing is not to prove or disprove any particular view (that’s been done to death). But to simply share what helped me greatly concerning the topic of the “end times”. It is simple, no charts are needed, you don’t have to be a great scholar with a bunch of letters behind your name, all you need is a Bible and basic reading comprehension skills. I am writing this for those that are in the pews and have a desire to answer the fool according to his folly so he is not wise in his own eyes. (Pr 26:5)
I pray this will bless you the reader and help you on you journey through the Eschatological maze.

Chapter 1 Setting the course

ONE of the most repeated or insinuated charges against Christians, and Christianity by default, is that Christians are dumb. I have had this claim made about me more times than I can count and sometimes I deserved it. In the last 14 yrs since coming to Christ I have been through many studies and many fazes of defending the faith. This is not an apologetic (defense) book, however it will have apologetics as the underlying tone and the main motivation for writing it.
It will focus in on what is known as the Olivet discourse revealed in Matthew, Mark and Luke. This will not be an exhaustive exposition of every verse nor will it address every question or objection. It will however be a basic reading comprehension exercise using these three text with Matthew being the more closely focus. I will pose several questions (many repeated ad nauseum) simply in an effort to make us think as we read. These questions are for you, the reader, to answer for yourself as you study the text.
I will caution you before we begin that it may challenge some deeply held beliefs. I will do my best to not make commentary or try to lead you to a conclusion, instead my hopes are to spark a greater desire to dig deeper. If by chance you desire more resources to help after reading this book I will include some resources that may help in that search.
Let’s start with a few questions I want to pose before we begin. These are simple repeatable questions that can be applied not just to this discussion but are useful in all areas of life and thought.
Why do I believe what I believe?
How do I know that to be true?
Says who? (My favorite)
In my experience these three simple questions can cause a great deal of turmoil IF we will examine the answers to them carefully. However that turmoil can be the sharpening stone used to strengthen our faith.
Simple example that may help unpack what I mean.
“Cain killed Abel with a rock”.
Scripture does not say this, instead we have read this into the text or have heard it explained this way so many times it’s becomes such a “fact” that we will repeat it without even realizing it. Now I realize this is a well known error that is starting to correct itself in the discussions and I praise God for that, but this concept is not limited to Genesis chapter 4.
“Cain killed Abel with a rock! Says who? Maw-maw said........
As we read, hear sermons and participate in discussions these things happen. This is the reason my favorite of the question above is “Says who?”. I have many times caught myself reading over important details of Scripture or just taking it as true because I have heard it so many times. I am not alone in this, as a pastor I see this happen over and over. I often refer to it as “maw-mawology”. Mom, dad, maw-maw, pawpaw etc said (taught) something and it stays with us. It could be another source of authority like a teacher, favorite expositor etc. I may use this term often, but trust it’s not to degrade but simply to point out this may be a portion of Scripture that has been affected by outside influence.
Another source today that produces the maw-mawology effect is the unlimited source of “teachers” “preachers” on the inter-webs. It will not take long to find someone that has (“a word from the Lord” “new understanding of...” “clear understanding of …). This is a serious issues in our world and churches today. With the increase of the ability to communicate across the entire earth in seconds folks have come out of the woodwork to “teach”. Some of these teachings gain ground and start spreading just like that non existent rock in Genesis ch 4. This has, in my opinion, supercharged misunderstandings that have led to so many anxieties. This I think reinforces our maw-mawology especially if the source hits on something we already hold to be true.
This same thing happens on the topic of the “end times”, apologetically it occured to me that the charge of being a “stupid Christian” or “Christians are dumb” is sometimes accurate. For this reason this book was born out love for the church to be more become a little more consistent. My prayer is that a small realization will be revealed for many readers that will help shape in them a confident, consistent and solid foundation.
I do ask that you will allow grace if/when something hits home and maybe challenges a view you have held as true for a very long time.
It can be surprising and uncomfortable when we find a blind spot in our basic reading that has been a foundational support to a view.
Let us not load the ammo in the unbelievers weapon by being too comfortable in our reading abilities.
I will also share our churches confession concerning Scripture so you will know where I will stand boldly.
Scripture
We believe the Bible to be the written revelation of God, complete and sufficient in all respects. We believe the Scriptures to be “God-breathed” and therefore fully authoritative in and of themselves; they rely for their authority upon no church, council, or creed, but are authoritative simply because they are the Word of God. The Scriptures, as they embody the very speaking of God, partake of His authority and His power.

Chapter 2 Foundation of Olivet Discourse

Step one in reading any Scripture (or any literature) is following the flow of the text. Understanding the setting of the conversation we are reading about.
As we pick up the narrative in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21 His disciples are asking Him questions. Jesus is answering these questions.
We know that Jesus just had a confrontation with the Jewish leadership (see ch 23). He pronounces several woes upon them.
Matthew 23:38–24:3 (NKJV)
See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ” Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
They are leaving the temple: Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple.
He had just told the Jewish leadership “See! Your house is left to you desolate”;(Mat 23:38) and for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ ”
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ ” reference to Ps 118:26. Below is a sample of the Ps for better context of the reference that Jesus is making.
The Psalm repeatedly states in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. The stone which the builder rejected has become the chief corner stone. The Jewish leader ship would have known this Psalm and so would the disciples.
Psalm 118:10–12 (NKJV)
All nations surrounded me, But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them. They surrounded me, Yes, they surrounded me; But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them. They surrounded me like bees; They were quenched like a fire of thorns; For in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
Later in the Psalm.
Psalm 118:22–28 (NKJV)
The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. Save now, I pray, O Lord; O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We have blessed you from the house of the Lord. God is the Lord, And He has given us light; Bind the sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I will praise You; You are my God, I will exalt You.
Who?
When?
He is speaking to real people at a real time in history. Notice the underlined text sometimes missed. YOU, TILL (until). He had just made a statement that the disciples picked up on and because of that they point out the temple.
And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
Who is he talking to?
What’s he referring to with His answer?
He is talking to the disciples about the temple.
They move on from there and come to the Mount of Olives hence the name the Olivet Discourse (teaching at the Mt of Olives). Jesus sat down (normal for teaching) and 4 of His disciples came privately to Him. Peter, John, James and Andrew see Mk13:3.
Mark 13:3 NKJV
Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately,
Matthew 24:3 (NKJV)
Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
Who is asking? 4 disciples
These three questions:
When will this happen?
What happen?
Temple Destruction
What will be the SIGN of Your coming?
What coming?
I say to you, you shall see Me no more till
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’
What will be the SIGN of the end of the AGE?
What age?
This age
Mark and Luke will help formulate the question a little better.
Mark 13:4 (NKJV)
“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?”
Luke 21 (NKJV)
but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?”
Summary
Jesus is talking with the Jewish leadership and pronounces woes upon them. He says your house will be desolate. The disciples hear this and point out the temple as they are leaving Jerusalem and Jesus says it will be gone not one stone left. As they get to the Mount of Olives 4 come to Him privately and ask when will this happen and how will we know what to look for.
(This is a simple enough foundation. Some difficulties arise on translational issues: IE: the KJV uses the world for age, but a quick look at a Greek lexicon can help with that. )
Two question to hold on to as we examine the rest of the passage is:
”WHO IS HE TALKING TO?”
“WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT?”

Chapter 3 Wars and Rumor of Wars

We are on the Mt of Olives with 5 people. Jesus and 4 disciples- Peter, John, James and Andrew. This is a private conversation.
Matthew 24:4–8 (NKJV)
And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.
He is talking to the disciples, about the things they will see.
Wars and rumors of wars is a popular theme we hear repeated all the time. It’s what I was taught to expect in the future. It’s what I was told to look for in the future. I was taught to expect and to watch out for false Christ based on this very text. Nation rising against nation and kingdom against kingdom, famines, pestilence and earthquakes.
No doubt we see these things today but is this text talking about what I will see?
Who is He talking to?
What’s are these signs of?
Am I being told not to be deceived?
Is He talking to 4 disciples still?
I realize you may be ready to slam this book shut and declare me a heretic and move on. I get that allot. Please hang in there. This is that spot for me that I had to say “WHOA!!!” wait a minute.
My maw-mawology had me reading this text as speaking directly to me about my time. It has been repeated so many times and so matter factually that it has become the rock in Genesis 4.
But honest basic reading comprehension strips that from my thoughts. I can not violate the text and take this and apply it my day in that way. If I do that the atheist can quickly pull this small section of scripture and point out the fault and he’d be right.
Is it true I should be cautious of being deceived by false Christ?
ABSOLUTELY
Should I be aware of wars and rumors of wars?
ABSOLUTELY
Should I be concern and aware about famines, disease and earthquakes?
ABSOLUTELY
Can I use this HOLY text to say that Jesus was speaking about my day?
????
Let us handle the Words of the Living God carefully.
Summary
Jesus leaves the temple after pronouncing woes on the leadership. His disciples point out the temple that He had just told the leadership would be left desolate (destroyed) He responds by saying it’s going to be destroyed not one stone left. Incidentally that happened in 70 AD, within the same generation, by the Roman general Titus. As they arrive at the Mount of Olives 4 of them come to Him privately and ask when will this happen and how will we know it’s time.
Jesus starts by telling them they will see certain things such as wars, famine, false Christ etc. He also tells them not to be troubled because this is the beginning of the sorrows.
Real people, at a real place, in real time.
Why do I believe what I believe?
How do I know that to be true?

Chapter 4 Gospel and the WHOLE World

Jesus continues His answer to the question. When? What should we look for? Notice the simpleness of the passage.
Who will be killed? Who will be hated? Remember this is a private conversation with 4 disciples on the Mount of Olives.
Matthew 24:9–14 (NKJV)
Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
After what happens to who?
End of what?
Notice as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, and He answers, they will deliver you up, they will kill you. James, Andrew and Peter were all killed before the temple was destroyed in 70 AD, John was in exile on the island of Patmos just before the destruction of the temple. Something he called the tribulation in which he was a brother in.
Consider Marks rendition of the same answer.
Mark 13:9–13 (NKJV)
“But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
And Luke's
Luke 21:10–19 (NKJV)
Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake. But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But not a hair of your head shall be lost. By your patience possess your souls.
But what about the gospel of the kingdom being preached in ALL THE WORLD?
Popular maw-mawology teaches this will be when THE END will come. So we must get out there and share the gospel with all the ends of the earth. A spark to the overseas mission campaigns in many denominations.
Now should we be sharing the gospel in ALL THE WORLD?
ABSOLUTELY.
Is this the passage we should use to justify sharing the gospel in ALL THE WORLD?
KINDA, it is certainly the mission given in Chapter 28 known as the great commission.
Is this being stated so that we will know when the end of the world will come?
NO
Remember
”WHO IS HE TALKING TO?” (Peter, John, James and Andrew)
“WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT?” (Destruction of the Temple)
Let’s look at how this word WORLD is use in other text and what it is referring to. Consider the below passages and ask the question. Is the writer communicating that the entire earth is being registered? Is it being explained that the entire earth was experiencing famine?
Luke 2:1 (NKJV)
And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
Is the writer communicating that the entire earth is being registered?
No it is communicating that the Roman empire is conducting a census. The known world, inhabited world. The world of the writer.
Acts 11:28 (NKJV)
Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar.
Is it being explained that the entire earth was experiencing famine?
No it is communicating that all of Rome was experiencing a famine. Exactly like Jesus said would happen in the life time of the disciples. See the book of Acts for more information on the extent of the famine.
The word for world used in all three of these passages simply means inhabited earth, known world, inhabited region.

Chapter 5 Abomination of Desolation

Jesus is still on the Mount of Olives talking to 4 disciples privately answering the question they ask. When will this happen and how will we know, what will be the warning SIGNS?
Jesus explains here that they will see the abomination of desolation, Luke describe it as Jerusalem being surrounded by armies is when their desolation is near. The command is to FLEE Judea a real place, the very place they are at when this conversation is taking place
See! Your house is left to you desolate (Mat 23:38)
Matthew 24:15–22 (NKJV)
“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
Jesus accurately predicts the destruction of the temple in 70 AD within the generation he said it would happen. A generation is 40 yrs in Scripture He made this prediction approx 30-33 AD. Precisely 40 yrs later it was destroyed by Titus the Roman general during the Roman Jewish war. The Romans dug up the foundation and plowed the ground and planted a field according to historians.
not one stone shall be left here upon another Mat 24:2
Maw-mawology often inserts a or THE anti-christ into here in some way or another. The word anti-christ is not in the text nor is any man mentioned.
Marks account is very similar
Mark 13:14–20 (NKJV)
“So when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not” (let the reader understand), “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let him who is on the housetop not go down into the house, nor enter to take anything out of his house. And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! And pray that your flight may not be in winter. For in those days there will be tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the creation which God created until this time, nor ever shall be. And unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days.
And Luke says
Luke 21:20–24 (NKJV)
“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
Notice in Luke the it’s
What is it?
Where are they fleeing from?
Tribulation, great tribulation, great distress.
Jerusalem will be trampled according to Luke.
Maw-mawology often teaches about a great tribulation or the rise of the anti-christ that will make peace in Jerusalem fro 3.5 yrs and for 3.5 yrs of terror, this 7 years being THE GREAT TRIBULATION. The book of Daniel is used to set this point up pulling from the reference in Daniel 9. Using this as a anchor point for that “fact”.
The abomination of desolation is mention once in Daniel, Daniel 11:31, another reference is made in Daniel 9:27 which is often used, we will look at both of them. The Lord is pointing back to a 500 yr old prophecy given to Daniel concerning the future of his people. Daniel 9 lays out a prophetic timeline for his people that leads all the way up to the coming Messiah.
Daniel 11 describes the warring kingdoms that will affect his people. We pick up the story when the king of the north makes another run against the king of the south. He runs into resistance with ship from Cyprus when this happens he’s enraged and make a run against the people of the holy covenant (Daniels people) in this run he desecrates the temple removes their ability to sacrifice he will place there the abomination of desolations. This warring is documented in history. It is well documented the things that happened to the temple and at the temple. This would have been known to the 4 disciples as part of their history. Jesus tells them when YOU see it, know what is happening.
Daniel 11:29–35 (NKJV)
At the appointed time he shall return and go toward the south; but it shall not be like the former or the latter. For ships from Cyprus shall come against him; therefore he shall be grieved, and return in rage against the holy covenant, and do damage. “So he shall return and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. And forces shall be mustered by him, and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation. Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. And those of the people who understand shall instruct many; yet for many days they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering. Now when they fall, they shall be aided with a little help; but many shall join with them by intrigue. And some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end; because it is still for the appointed time.
Daniel 9:27 is also used for a reference point to build a teaching however there is not much there to use. This is a prophecy concerning Daniels people telling when the Messiah will come and what will happen to him. It tells of a destruction that will follow Him being cut off for His people.
Daniel 9:27 (NKJV)
Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.”
When we take both of these accounts together in proper context Jesus is using a historical event to unpack what they are to prepare for just as the scriptures foretold.
It is recorded in history that when the Roman army had surrounded Jerusalem and was preparing to seige the city, that the army was called away before the seige began. When this happened the Christians fled to Pela in Macedonia. They did this because they had a word from their Lord that when they see this seige being set up that they should flee. They did exactly that.
They are also warned again not to believe the reports of false christ. Similar to the earlier warning reminding them that even if they are doing great signs and wonders.
Matthew 24:23–26 (NKJV)
“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand. “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it.

Chapter 6 Coming of the Son of Man

Now we get to a hard part. What in the world is happening now.
We are still on the Mount of Olives, still Jesus and 4 disciples, still answering the question. When and what will be the sign. Into this mix we have thrown the word THE COMING of the Son of Man. The coming is the part that causes the biggest issue. It has to be the second coming at the end of time right, because it has to be. Maw-maw said.
Before you throw this book down, I am NOT denying the return of the LORD in glory. I would refer you to 1 Cor 15:24 if you want to follow me in what that entails. What I will state is if we are using this passage for that event we may be called out for our error and made to look dumb.
Many Bibles will title this section the second coming of Christ. Notice that’s not in the inspired Holy Writ it is a context setter for the reader depending on the translation being used. It is important to follow the flow of the text and the conversation that is happening. Jesus and 4 disciple in a private conversation.
Matthew 24:27–31 (NKJV)
For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together. “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Mark 13:24–27 (NKJV)
“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars of heaven will fall, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then He will send His angels, and gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest part of earth to the farthest part of heaven.
Luke 21:25–28 (NKJV)
“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”
If this is referring to the “end time” coming of Christ. Where did it transition? Why would the following verses go back to the context of you (the disciples) if this is the “end time” event?
It doesn’t flow with the order of the conversation. It doesn’t fit the context of the conversation if it is a “end time” event. Following the flow of the conversation it is reasonable to see the “coming” is not referring to the “end time” thought. It is a coming in judgement.
in the name of the Lord I will destroy them. Ps 118
I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Mat 23:39 .
We are giving another clue that this is a judgement coming or announcement with a simple Old Testament reference search.
Matthew 24:28 NKJV
For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.
This is Old Testament language referring to judgement (Job 39:30, Ezek 39:17, Hab 1:8). But wait there’s more!!
As Jesus continues to answer the 4 disciples he goes on to use even more Old Testament Judgement language. He continues to explain that after the tribulation OF THOSE DAYS, sun moon and stars will darken and fall from heaven. This is also OT judgement language. Is. 13:10; 24:23; Ezek. 32:7; Joel 2:10, 31; 3:15; Amos 5:20; 8:9; Zeph. 1:15.
Remember the focus is on the destruction of the temple. The people of the temple (leadership) are in view for all these happenings, along with the disciples that will be seeing the signs leading up to this destruction. Refer to Gen 37:9 for the first reference used for Isreal being referred to as sun, moon and stars for a better understanding on what is being said. The Lord uses many OT references that are known to the people born in Judaism.
Genesis 37:9–10 (NKJV)
Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to me.” So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?”
But wait there’s more!!!
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Consider just two of many references that help put this in perspective. What does it mean that He is coming on the clouds?
Psalm 104:3 (NKJV)
He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters, Who makes the clouds His chariot, Who walks on the wings of the wind,
or consider
Isaiah 19:1 (NKJV)
The burden against Egypt. Behold, the Lord rides on a swift cloud, And will come into Egypt; The idols of Egypt will totter at His presence, And the heart of Egypt will melt in its midst.
This Jesus telling the 4 disciples that “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the Son of Man is coming in divine judgement. When this happens He will gather His chosen people.
Summary
Jesus leaves the temple after pronouncing woes on the leadership. His disciples point out the temple that He had just told the leadership would be left desolate (destroyed). He responds by saying it’s going to be destroyed not one stone left.
Some of those 4 men will be put to death and delivered over to tribulation, they will be hated by nations. Lawlessness will abound many will grow cold. Those who endures shall be saved. The gospel will be preached in all the known world IE the Roman empire.
When they see the abomination standing in the holy place, know it is time to flee because great distress in coming. Pray it will be in good weather because you will need to run to the mountains. They are reminded not to fall for false Christ during this time also. Even if they are doing great signs and wonders.
After this great distress (tribulation) Jesus is coming on the clouds in judgement. This coming will be quick, there will be many slaughtered, he will protect and gather His people and bring down the old covenant system (sun, moon, stars).

Chapter 7 THIS GENERATION

We are still on the Mount of Olives, still Jesus and 4 disciples, still answering the question. When and what will be the sign.
Jesus shares with the disciples a parable to set up the rest of this chapter. This portion of the conversation is in my opinion the most abused and confused in the entire chapter. I have read entire books explaining away the plain meaning of this text. From the meaning of the fig tree to the most disputed two words in all of scripture (hyperbole), THIS GENERATION. This one scripture has been for many years a point that has been used by many unbelievers to show an inconsistency in the Christian faith. The assertion usually goes like this.
“Jesus lied when He spoke these words.” “Scripture is wrong.” This prophecy didn’t come true.”
Popular response is to explain away the plain meaning of the text and show how this refers to the generation alive at the “end time” return of Christ. When this is done the unbeliever is right in calling us on being inconsistent. Even the atheist can see this is not the case. That is often refuted by saying, “well you need eyes to see” ya know those secret spiritual eyes and understanding. Don’t get me wrong Scriptures are spiritually discerned by the power of the Holy Spirit working in His people. But that doesn’t make them incoherent to others. The Scriptures are coherent, infallible, inerrant and the very words of the living God.
So did Jesus Lie? Did all these things happen to that generation?
How can we effectively and correctly answer the charge?
Step one let us not over complicated things. It says what it says. It means what it says. We don’t need a secret decoder ring to discern the truth of what is happening here.
Matthew 24:32–35 (NKJV)
“Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors! Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
Andrew, Peter, James, John you know what a fig tree looks like in summer right? OK, so the way you know how to look at a fig tree to tell the time of year, use that same ability to see what is coming and what will be the SIGN of these things.
I am telling YOU, it will happen in THIS generation. That’s it. It’s that simple.
But the sun, moon and stars??? See chapter 6. It really is that simple.
The accusation Jesus lied....
No He didn’t, all these came to pass in the generation He said it would. He told His disciples beforehand to know what to look for when it was time for all these things to come to pass. A quick survey of the history of time shows Jesus to be exact in the prophetic message he is sharing with John, James, Andrew and Peter.
Below is Mark and Luke’s account of the same conversation:
Mark 13:28–31 (NKJV)
“Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near—at the doors! Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
Luke 21:29–33 (NKJV)
Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

Chapter 8 Days of Noah

Jesus and 4 disciples on the Mount of Olives same conversation about when and what will be the signs. He begins this section with telling no one knows when, similar to Noah’s day everyone will be going about there business not expecting the end yet the end will come just like in Noah’s day and they will all be affected. Couple of questions to think about concerning the days of Noah.
Who was taken away?
Who was saved through in that event?
Matthew 24:36–44 (NKJV)
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Maw-mawology often speaks of a rapture event here or “the rapture”. All centralized on the word taken which simply means seized, taken way, removed forcibly etc. Trying to find a rapture or “the rapture” in Scripture this in not the best place. Again it can be pointed out this simply means some are taken away some are not in the context of the destruction of the temple and of Jerusalem. The entire point of what is being said is to be watching be ready for this event when you see all these signs.
Luke 21:34–36 (NKJV)
“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Mark 13:32–37 (NKJV)
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch. Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning—lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!”
Taking Luke and Mark into consideration you have the same focus. Watch and they add pray.

Chapter 9 BE WISE AND WATCH

Jesus and 4 disciples on the Mount of Olives still answering the question when and what should we be looking for. He adds in this section being working and wise. Using imagery that will be expanded on in Chapter 25 as He completes the answer to their question.
Matthew 24:45–51 (NKJV)
“Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods. But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Be wise be watchful. Again this in context to all the things said before in this private conversation with Jesus and 4 of His disciples.
