John 19:1-16.
Introduction:
Introduction:
Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him.
And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him;
and they began to come up to Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and to give Him slaps in the face.
It was around this time when Jesus was sent over to Herod, which Luke 23 records, where even Herod had found Jesus to do nothing deserving of death
He comes back… and is beaten.
Pilate, who in John 18:38 said “I find no fault in Him” is found brutally scourging the flash of Jesus in verse 1
Scourging had 3 purposes:
punishment
gain confession
satisfy a party
Mat 27:27-31 tells of how Jesus was given a reed (staff)… beat in the head with it… when time to crucify, stripped him and put on his old garments.
Kings wore crowns, but not ones of torture… meant to humiliate
Highlights the wicked nature of man
Crown, Robe, Title… as Christians, we give Him the true crown, robe, and title.
Not to shame, but to glorify His name
Pilate came out again and *said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.”
Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate *said to them, “Behold, the Man!”
So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate *said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”
The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”
John the Baptist: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world
God the Father: This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased
Pilate: Behold: The man.
To see the Man among men, the Perfect Man
“Surely they will deem him unworthy of death”
But they cried: “Crucify him”
Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;
and he entered into the Praetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
So Pilate *said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?”
Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”
“Exceedingly afraid”
What a contrast, between the governor who on the one hand is afraid to do right, and reluctant to do wrong… and the calm, meek endurance of Christ!
Who knows their hearts and thoughts! Yet like a lamb led to be slaughtered, He opened not His mouth!
And even still, showed pity and love to his persecutors, with even greater intensity than than their own hate, so that he might save the world from their state
In silent submission to the Father
In silent submission to his murderers
In silent pity for us
Why arent you defending yourself!!! … Jesus willingly gave himself to die
Jesus breaks his silence for the first time in this section and tells the arrogant Roman:
It was God who uplifted you to where you are!
It was God who brought the Romans into this Holy City!
It was God who allows you to excercise justice over me… and in so doing, remember that the ‘power’ in which you boast of, was GIVEN to you
“He who delivered me to you Has the greater sin”
Referring I believe to Chiapas and the rulers…
It’s not that he just sinned more, thats irrelevant… but that
God gave his people authority… the Jewish leaders… and they, being blinded by their self-righteousness and hatred towards Christ… didn’t care about the trial or the truth, but delivered Him over to the heathens for THEM to judge.
God GAVE THEM THE POWER to execute a righteous judgement… YET!! They did everything BUT seek the truth
Judas, Caiphas, religious leaders
Matthew 27:19–20 “While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.” But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.”
Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!”
So they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate *said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
What good is an elegant judgement seat… or the mosaic floor… or the title of judge, if you are nothing but a murderer.
The CHEIF priest answer: “We will have no king but Caesar”
Driven by hate, they destroy and disown their Messianic hope… the glory of their nation
Those who don’t bow down to Christ, will bow down before a tyrant
Whether that be Pilate, Satan, or yourself
“You may do today exactly what Pilate did. He is simply an example of a man who lacks decision of character, who does not possess the courage of his convictions, who tries to compromise with wrong, who disobeys conscience through fear of personal loss.” Erdmans Commentary
John’s Gospel is the only one:
To tell of the attempt to alter the name on the cross
To tell of Mary, the mother of Jesus, being entrusted to him
To tell us the 2 phrases: ‘I thirst’ and ‘It is finished’
Ad to depict Christ as bearing the cross to Calvary
He gives specific details of the event that had been burned into his memory
Christ’s position in the middle
The jar of vinegar
Broadens the story about the casting of lots
So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.
They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.
There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
Who put the 2 robbers beside our Lord?
Likely Pilate himself. Whether intentionally or not, it showed in their mind that Jesus was in the same class as they
My translation says ‘Jesus was in between’… others say ‘in their midst’
To the point of death, Christ is found identifying with sinners, in their midst… central to all things and all men
He is the central theme of all humanity
He is the center of our faith
Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.
So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am aKing of the Jews.’ ”
Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
All Gospel accounts tell us of the title He recieved, but John alone tells us it was Pilate’s doing
Pilate’s IGNORANCE!
To have one final jab at the priests?… but it was a fact!!
It proclaimed the dominion and kingship of God!
It proclaimed the message that Israel had FORSAKEN their king!
It depicted a man who despite being hung upon the tree… was at the SAME moment, being lifted up upon the throne of the cross!
That Romans, Jews, Gentiles, & priests alike would come and BOW before Him as LORD and KING!
For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ
It was used to describe their crime…. But there was no crime in the statement, it was true
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.
24 So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”
I imagine the soldiers were doing what they were told up to this point, but now they divide Jesus’ garments
Jesus likely would’ve been just another rebel Jew or commiter of a crime to them, we don’t know
Its one thing to cast lots and mock Jesus… but its another to do it right in front of His face
May we never reduce Jesus to but a portion of garment to be bartered
The glaring point that’s behind this moment is Jesus, who submits himself to that kind of shame… mocking, reviling
Upper room… laid aside his garments, wash their feet
And now He humbles himself even more, being clothed only… with shame
As Christians, we clothe Christ with love… and the Father would clothe Him with robes of exaltation and majesty!
It shows how little the world cares about their sin.
Prophecy fulfilled
16 For dogs have surrounded me;
A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
They pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
They look, they stare at me;
18 They divide my garments among them,
And for my clothing they cast lots.
It was a genuine need, however it fulfilled prophesy.. Psalm 69:21.
If any man thirsts let him come unto me and drink
21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and take for yourselves lambs according to your families, and slay the Passover lamb.
22 “You shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning.
Jesus is found on the wooden doorpost, his blood being shed across it… Hyssop reaching his mouth
Psalm 51:4–7 “4 Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge. … 7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
Used for sacrifices in fire… and ceremonial cleansing… purify the water.
For those who doubt the deity of Christ… they should answer the simple question: Why was Jesus crucified?
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
It was recorded twice by our Lord… one from the cross… once on the throne Rev 21:6.
Like a traveller examining if he’s ready and made all the preparations
He gives the signal it’s time to go
What had Christ done to utter these words?
Left no loose ends
His hands laid the foundation
He alone, out of every man on earth, completed His task
Notice 3 things:
Complete obedience:
He always did the will of the Father, in EVERY circumstance
He always declared, I MUST do these things, I must carry this out, I MUST be about my Father’s business
He was perfect. And looked back upon His life with a clear conscience not finding any transgression or imperfection
John 8:46 “46 “Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?”
Matthew 3:15 “15 “it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”
Now He looks back and sees that it all had come to pass… all had been fulfilled… righteousness had been fulfilled… therefore it is finished
So the Lord laid on Him, the iniquity of us all
2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
He is still the eternal Son of God… yet in this moment, he fully drank the wrath of God for us… the cup the we deserve to drink was now empty… and Jesus was separated from the presence, of God’s graciousness. He was forsaken, left, turned away from… Christ bore the iniquity of us all. Something He never felt before… sin… that God cannot look upon.
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.
He bowed his head…
There’s an interesting connection here whether it’s viable or not
Matthew 8:20 “20 Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.””
Gave up His spirit
John 10:17–18 “17 “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18 “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.””
