PSALMS 23
The Most Precious Of The Psalm’s
Psalm 23:1–6 (NKJV) 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
To me Psalm 23 is probably one of the most precious and most use Psalm. It brings delight in knowing that the Shepherd takes care of us in life, it comfort in the hard times of life and is use at many funeral service’s.
I can just picture the Shepherd boy David with his harp as the Spirit gave it to Him.
This Psalm brings Comfort, Assurance, It gives us comfort at the passing away of a loved one, It speaks of God’s presence, His Love and His Goodness and that He is with us even in the difficult times of life and so much more.
This is the John 10 of the O.T., with the sheep experiencing the more abundant life provided for them by our Shepherd.
Will look at that verse in a little bit
One commentary said this about this beloved Psalm:
Psalm 23 has been labeled the “Pearl of the Psalms.” This wonderful psalm has the perfumed fragrance of perpetual peace, secure serenity, triumphant trust, and confident calm. Not even the shadow of death troubles David. Psalm 23 has dried many tears and supplied the vessel into which many hearts have poured their peaceful faith. This psalm is truly a harp with six strings that has been tuned for thousands of years and for eternity to come. For some, the words of this psalm have been the final ones that have graced their lips before entering eternity.
Psalm 23:1 (NKJV) 1 The Lord {Yahweh or Jehovah} is MY shepherd; I shall not want.
I think a verse like this has so much in it.
Psalm 23:1 (AMP) 1THE LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and shield me], I shall not lack.
Psalm 23:1 (NLT) 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.
Psalm 23:1 (TPT)1 The Lord is my best friend and my shepherd. I always have more than enough.
You know It’s one thing to acknowledge the Lord as A shepherd or THE shepherd, but David knew the Lord as MY shepherd. It’s only through personal relationship with the Lord that we get all the benefits put forth in this psalm.
Philippians 4:19 (NKJV)19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Psalm 34:9–10 (NKJV) 9 Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him.
10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.
Think of this, the name The Lord or Jehovah is pictured in every verse of this chapter.
Verse One—Jehovah-Rohi= (The Lord my Shepherd)
Jehovah-Jireh-=The Lord will Provide (I shall not want)
Verse Two—Jehovah-Shalom=The Lord is Peace (He makes me to lie down) This is used in Judges 6:24.… Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovah-shalom: or the Lord is Peace.
Verse Three—Jehovah-Rapha= The Lord our Healer (He restoreth my soul). This is used in Exodus 15:26b.… I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”
* Verse Four—Jehovah-Tsidkenu= The Lord Our Righteousness) (He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness); This word is used in
Jeremiah 23:6 (NKJV) In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS
The other name in this verse is Jehovah-Shammal=The Lord is There (for thou art with me). This name appears in Ezekiel 48:35 (NKJV) All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.
God is with us wherever we go. He will never leave or forsake us.
* Verse Five—Jehovah-Nissi=The Lord our Banner, Refuge, or Standard. (Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:) This name is used in Exodus 17:15—And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi:
* Verse Six—Jehovah-Jireh= The Lord Sees or Provides (goodness and mercy shall follow me). This name is used in Genesis 22:14.… And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.
Psalm 23:2 (NKJV) 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
Psalm 23:2 (AMP) 2 He makes me lie down in [fresh, tender] green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters.
That’s a good Shepherd, taking care of yes our spiritual needs but also our Physical needs.
Psalm 23:3 (NKJV) 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
Psalm 23:3 (AMP) 3 He refreshes and restores my life (my self); He leads me in the paths of righteousness [uprightness and right standing with Him—not for my earning it, but] for His name’s sake.
Psalm 23:4 (NKJV) 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; {why} For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4 (AMP) 4 Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me.
Psalm 23:5 (NKJV) 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Psalm 23:5 (AMP) 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my [brimming] cup runs over.
Psalm 23:6 (NKJV) 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
Psalm 23:6 (AMP) 6 Surely or only goodness, mercy, and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, and through the length of my days the house of the Lord [and His presence] shall be my dwelling place.
Jesus is our GOOD SHEPHERD!
John 10:9–16 (NKJV) 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.
13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.
14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.
15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.
John 10:9–16 (TPT) 9 I am the Gateway. To enter through me is to experience life, freedom, and satisfaction.
10 A thief has only one thing in mind—he wants to steal, slaughter, and destroy. But I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect—life in its fullness until you overflow!
11 I am the Good Shepherd who lays down my life as a sacrifice for the sheep.
12-13 But the worker who serves only for wages is not a real shepherd. Because he has no heart for the sheep he will run away and abandon them when he sees the wolf coming. And then the wolf mauls the sheep, drags them off, and scatters them.
14 “I alone am the Good Shepherd, and I know those whose hearts are mine, for they recognize me and know me,
15 just as my Father knows my heart and I know my Father’s heart. I am ready to give my life for the sheep.
16 “And I have other sheep that I will gather which are not of this Jewish flock. And I, their shepherd, must lead them too, and they will follow me and listen to my voice. And I will join them all into one flock with one shepherd.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the true shepherd of mankind. He never forget us, fails us, or forsakes us. God opened a virgin womb and gave us the Good Shepherd (John 10:11). God opened a virgin tomb and gave us the Great Shepherd (Hebrews 13:20). God will open a virgin sky and give us the Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4).
In the Old Testament, the sheep died for the shepherd by being sacrificed. In the New Testament, the shepherd died for the sheep on the cross of Calvary.
Today as we have looked at this most beautiful of Psalms, let away remember that Jesus is our True Shepherd and as our shepherd, He will take care of us till the day we go home to be with Him.
