Good afternoon. On behalf of all the family, thank you for being here today to celebrate the beautiful life and legacy of Jane Sorrell (sur-ell) . A woman who lived life to the fullest. A kind woman who leaves us with a lasting legacy of love and joy. Today as we remember and we grieve, but we do not grieve without hope, today we think of this picture of heaven that is painted in revelation....
Rev

Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ u or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Jane Dee Sorell sur-ell) . passed on Wednesday July 10th, 2024, see was 90 years old. Jane was born in Kokomo on December 14, 1933 to John and Alvena Chapin (chah-pin). She was one of four kids in the family, the siblings would remain close their whole lives. She was always close with her family. She was always really proud of her father, John, who worked on the Nickel Plate Railroad. And after her father death, her mother moved in and lived her own family for many years.
Growing up Jane was an adventurous and athletic young woman, a great swimmer who loved to spend her summer time at the Kokomo seashore and I am told her love for swimming continued for a long long time.
Jane graduated from Kokomo High School in 1951. It was there she met the love of her life, Jim Sorrell. The two Eloped and we married on April 11, 1953, right before Jim would have to head to Germany with the service. While he was gone, Jane worked two jobs and because of all their saving, they had money for a downpayment on a house when he returned. They were always hardworking and frugal, being known for not buying curtains for their house until they could pay for it cash. The two of them enjoyed 67 years together before Jim passed away in 2020.
Jane worked for for 29 years before retiring and going into farming with Jim. They had over 100 arces. Jane ever the hardworker was known to pick rocks out of fields, put up fence posts, and take care of tree stumps with dynamite.
Eventually the two would sell the farm fore than they bought it for, thanks in part to Janes shinning up all the equipment. She had a gift or organizing and cleaning things.
They would move to florida for a season where Jim was unsuccessful in getting her to want to golf but they would eventually move back home to be closer to family.
To go back though, her life was radically changed for the better on September 15, 1957 when she and Jim welcomed there only child Brad, who was their pride and joy. Brad described his mom with such admiration. He was proud of the way she balanced being a working mom but being there for him. He has many fond memories of her being at his little league games and I got the impressive that few moms (and probably dads) could hit the ball with a bat as good as her.
Brad also remembers making memories with his mom….like during one family vacation when the drove out to California, Jim got pulled over for speeding….apparently Brad said to the office….”if you think he was going fast, you should she my mom drive.”
Brad your mom loved you a lot. Though the last few years her memory was failing her, deep down she always knew you were her boy.
She would say she did not like to be the center of attention, she could be quiet and reserved. But Jane had a tender heart that loved to serve others. I heard a story when her nephew passed away…she quietly came and got the gifts that had be bought from hum and returned them to take something painful off their plate. That was just who she was.
Arguably her favorite thing in the world was being a grandma to TJ, Seth, Kallie, and Brady. And being a great grandma to , Hudson, Kennedy, Charlotte, Vivian, Lucy, Ava, and Everett.
Rather than m tell you about her as a grandma…let me invite here grandkids to do it instead.
Song
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Ec 3:1–4.
Part of today is allowing ourselves to be honest with God about grief, frustrations, and even anger. The really great news is that He is not afraid of the feelings we have. In fact in the midst of our pain He gives us the gift of His presence and understanding. He also gives us his word to bring us comfort and direction.
PSalm

18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Matthew

4 Blessed are those who mourn,

for they will be comforted.

I believe that with my whole heart. That will grief will be a journey. One we wouldn't choose and will not like, we can take comfort in the fact that you don’t face it alone. We have a Refuge in God, ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭46:1-3, 10‬ ‭
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! Interlude “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
Philippians

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV): Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
John

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

I believe that is one of the greatest desires God has for you today, that you would find peace. That you would find peace in this world and that you would be with Him in the next.
But today we do not want to grieve without hope. Jane was a long term member of First Baptist Church in Kokomo. She was a woman who loved God’s word and was changed by His grace and forgiveness.
Paul said these words
Romans

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Isaiah

10 So do not fear, for I am with you;

do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you;

I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

God’s love will always be chasing us and there for us. Every single one of us.
John

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4

“Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
John‬ ‭14:1-3‬ ‭
Again this is for all people. This is a generous love. And its a love that casts out all fear.
John 3:16-17

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Again Jesus came into this world to save you and me, So we could have a better present and an ultimate future with Him, like Jane.
God desires that all his children would come home....that they would trust in him
John

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

No matter who you are and where you come from you are invited to experience this new life in Jesus.
Listen to this song called amazing grace…and allow this to be a time to dwell on this great gift of graces and the invitation Jesus give us to new life.
Today I take comfort and have joy thinking about how Jane is in heaven…she has been made new…free of pain, suffering, and worry. The invitation is for all of us to surrender to Jesus so that like Jane, we too may one day experience joy everlasting with Jesus for eternity.
Friends, Jane is whole and made new. And he is at rest with Jesus.
Jane Sorrell, well done good and faithful servant.
Pray
The Book of Common Prayer, 1979 The Burial of the Dead: Rite Two

I am Resurrection and I am Life, says the Lord.

Whoever has faith in me shall have life,

even though he die.

And everyone who has life,

and has committed himself to me in faith,

shall not die for ever.

As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives

and that at the last he will stand upon the earth.

After my awaking, he will raise me up;

and in my body I shall see God.

I myself shall see, and my eyes behold him

who is my friend and not a stranger.

For none of us has life in himself,

and none becomes his own master when he dies.

For if we have life, we are alive in the Lord,

and if we die, we die in the Lord.

So, then, whether we live or die,

we are the Lord’s possession.

Happy from now on

are those who die in the Lord!

So it is, says the Spirit,

for they rest from their labors.

A Psalm of David.

1 The LORD is my shepherd,

I shall not want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside cquiet waters.

3 He restores my soul;

He guides me in the cpaths of righteousness

For His name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I fear no evil, for You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

You have anointed my head with oil;

My cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,

And I will bdwell in the house of the LORD forever.
