What’s going on?

New Testament writers like Matthew wrote in Greek. Then people made copies so they could be shared.
for most ancient books, you usually have single digit copies, but For the Bible there are thousands (old and new testament) . . . on other ancient text is more accurate or reliable
the earliest copies, the oldest copies (manuscripts) of the Lord’s Prayer as recorded by Matthew do not have that phrase as part of the prayer.
So many scholars believe that the phrase “For thine is the kingdom . . . . .”was an added by someone using the scripture in a worship service . . .a doxology/edning for the prayer . . . something they would say after reading that scripture . . . .and the newer copies (still old to us) added that doxology in
Therefore many versions leave it out because we want nothing but the Word of God and not someone’s notes added in.
Luke version of the prayer doesn’t have that praise either.
Is there anything wrong in saying it?
No, it is a beautiful phrase, and it lines up with what the Bible teaches . . . but it is not what Jesus said. (just have that understanding)
So we have finished the series, because I am teaching on what Jesus said.

intro - i ain’t gonna fall for that

I like using bad english to get a point across
for the children, the proper way is: I am not going to fall for that.
but for emphasis: I ain’t gonna fall for that
Matthew 4:1–4 NASB95
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ”
I ain’t gonna fall for that
The reference for today’s verses start in . . .
Matthew 3:16–17 NASB95
16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
after Jesus was baptized, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved son, in whom i am well-pleased”
Jesus is the only begotten son of God, the messiah, the christ, the savior of the world.
That’s who he is, and he knows who he is . . . and if “you ain’t gonna fall for that”, you need to know who you are
and while we are not Jesus, we often underestimate who we are in God
there are many scriptures, but i will just share one scripture that tells us who we as Christians are
1 Peter 2:9 NASB95
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
you are . . . chosen, royal, a priest, holy, God’s personal possession . .
and God called you out of darkness into His marvelous light in order that you might show people how excellent He is
How good God is, How great God is, awesome
that’s who you are . . . and you should know and remember who you are .. . it will keep you from falling for the devil’s tricks
the enemy wants to stop you
The same Bible that teaches us about God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit also teaches us about satan and his fellow demons . . . them I refer to as the enemy
The enemy wants to stop you from completing the assignments God has for you to do . . . important assignments to show people how Good God is, How great God is, how awesome God is, how excellent God is
and if the enemy CAN’T stop you, they at least want to slow you down . . . or delay you until you run out of time
How does the enemy try to stop us from doing what we are called to do?
He tries to trick you, deceive you . . . the Bible says put on the whole armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil . . . .wiles are tricks, deceptions
so let’s look at how he tried to trick Jesus . . . right after Jesus was baptized, we read this
Matthew 4:1 NASB95
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
these are high stakes, If the devil gets Jesus to do wrong . . . .
it’s over and humanity is doomed
all of the Old Testament was for nothing (evey story, every miracle, every prophecy)
and the rest of the Bible will never be written
and the world will never know How Great God is
his great love, his great compassion,
And if the devil gets you off the right path
it too will affect humanity
a lot of setup went into putting you into this time and situation and it will be wasted
and some future blessings will never come to pass
and some people will never know How Great God is
So we are going to look at this trick the enemy uses so we won’t fall for that
Matthew 4:2 NASB95
2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.
fasting means that he is not eating food, and it also means that Jesus was praying
in fact, the most important part of fasting is the prayer piece . . . Jesus had a serious prayer life
If you don’t want to fall for the enemy’s tricks you need a serious prayer life
To accomplish what you have been called to do, you need a serious prayer life
To stay on the right track, you need a serious prayer life
you need to stay prayed up
regular prayer routine, filled with sincere prayers
and sometimes add fasting to your prayer
Commercial: Why was Jesus praying so diligently that fasted for 40 days? What do you think?
Did he want a new pair of sandals?
new robe?
a new donkey to ride?
no, his prayers were about fulfilling his divine purpose
his prayers were about doing God’s will
his prayers were about preparation to minister to people: preaching, teaching, healing, mentoring his future disciples
if you don’t want to fall for the enemy’s tricks, you have to pray for more than sandals, robes, and donkeys . . . . and cars, and homes, and clothes,
and while you SHOULD pray about everything . . . including material things . . . i have said many times before make sure that EVERYTHING includes your purpose and your calling
a favorite trick the enemy likes to use is worries about the necessities of life
the trick we used to fall for is worrying about the necessities of life
fasting has naturally caused Jesus to become hungry
Jesus wants and needs food, and the enemy uses this basic necessity of life to try to trick Jesus
Matthew 4:3 NASB95
3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
doesn’t sound that “evil” until you look at what is really happening.
The first thing the enemy tries to do is get Jesus to break his fast
What the enemy is really saying,
enough of this fast, dude you need some food
enough of this feeding the soul, you need some sustenance in your body
Satan is trying to trick Jesus into taking his focus off of God, take his focus off of purpose, take his focus off of ministry . . . . and put his focus on his physical needs
And don’t forget, Jesus is hungry, he hasn’t had food in minute . . . this is a REAL need
and The enemy will try to use YOUR real needs to take your focus off of God, your purpose, your ministry, your calling
real needs - food, shelter, clothing, bills, health
So he tells Jesus, “if you are the son of God, command that these stones become bread”
“If you are the son of God”
the set up to the trick is to get you to doubt who you are
that’s why you need to KNOW who you are, you need to REMEMBER who you are
because when you doubt who you are you will wonder
what shall I eat
where shall I stay
who is going to pay these bills
how am I going to make it
and the enemy tricks you into worrying about what you don’t have to worry about
but when you KNOW who you are . . . that you are chosen, part of the royal family, a priest, holy, God’s personal possession and you have been called out of darkness into God’s marvelous light . . . then you know you don’t have to worry about bread! . . . . you don’t have to worry about the necessities of life
command these stones become bread
Jesus, use your power to make bread
Jesus, put your focus on breakfast . . . forget eternity changing stuff . . . focus on your physical need
and if we fall for the enemy’s trick and put our focus on the physical necessities of life
We will use all of our Bible training on rent money
We will use all of our faith on water bill
we will use all of our prayer time on the car note
And we spend all of our energy on the temporary and forget about the eternal
But Jesus said, I ain’t gonna fall for that
Matthew 4:4 NASB95
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ”
Jesus responds by quoting the Old Testament scripture about why God gave the Israelites just enough food for each day when they were in the wilderness
God told the Israelites, I only gave you enough food for one day at a time, to teach you that you needed my words more than you need physical bread
I wanted you to understand that you needed spiritual bread (my words) more than you needed physical bread
I wanted you to understand that if you get spiritual bread . . . . the physical bread will come
if you get the spiritual right, the physical will be alright
in other words, If I put me first, I will supply all of your physical needs
sounds familiar doesn it: Matt six 33 . . . but seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness . . . .
so by quoting this scripture Jesus is saying, “I ain’t gonna fall for that trick, devil. I am not going to put the physical before the spiritual
I am not coming off my fast because there is a physical need in my life”
I am not going to let what is happening to me physically stop or slow down the spiritual things I got going on.
because I know I am the Son of God, and have a serious job to do!!!
and there you have it! WE must take on the same understanding
I am not going to allow rent issues to stop or slow me spiritually
I am not going to allow relationship problems (when I have done all I can do), stop or slow me down spiritually
I am not going to allow health issues, stop or slow me down spiritually
I am not going to allow car notes, to stop or slow me down spiritually
I am not going to fall for that trick any more, come what may I will be about my Father’s business
Why?
first because I know who I am . . . ain’t no if . . . I AM God’s child!
and God will take care of me!
he will supply my needs
he already knows what I need before I ask him
he promised to never leave me
he promised to never forsake me
I know who I am, And I know have an important job to do
I can’t let problems that God has promised to solve, stop me
I can’t let cares that God told me to cast on him, slow me down
I can’t let temporary issues, stop me from eternal duties
I have a charge to keep, I have a God to glorify
Yes, the problems are real, but yes God is real
Yes the problems are important, but my calling is more important
I am not gonna fall for the trick of putting secondary things first!
I am not going to fall for trick of worrying about things that are already taken care of
God did not create my mind for the purpose of worry . . . he created my mind so that I could be like Christ and glorify him
How many more years do you plan on putting all your energy and all your focus into non-issues
how many times have you worried about your car note . . . yet you still are getting to where you need to get to
how many times have you worried about rent or mortgage . . . . yet you still have shelter
some of you have worried 7 times at least just this year
don’t fall for the enemy’s tricks and become a professional worrier
oh me, oh my
whatever shall I do
why not become a professional Christian???
the type of Christian who says, His eye is on the sparrow and i know he watches me
the type of Christian who says, I don’t know about tomorrow but I know who holds tomorrow
they type of Christian who says, I got a feeling that everything is gonna be alright
I am not worried about my needs, I am focus on what God needs me to do!
I ain’t gonna fall for that anymore
How does it look like?
I have slowed my music down
Covid, people leaving church, money issues, relationship issues with my son
let me focus on being a great husband, pastor, musical artist . . .
Jesus
Jesus died and rose to save us
but more than just for heaven
but for purpose
so you can have an abundant life
not a life where you worry all the time an die
