What do we do when we are faced with an obstacle that prevents us from doing what God has called us to do or hinders the desires He has placed in our hearts? The Apostle Paul found himself dealing with this reality many times throughout his ministry and his response during such a time provides wisdom and instruction for us today.
1 Thessalonians 2:17–20 “But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us. For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.”
1 Thessalonians 2:17 “But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face,”
1. When God puts a desire in our hearts, we will…
a. Think about the task often
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
b. Make plans to accomplish the task
c. Work hard to complete the task
2. When hindrances arise we are faced with two choices
a. Quit and give up
Jonah
The Bible Knowledge Commentary (2:18)
“Whenever the ungodly cause us trouble, they are fighting under the banner of Satan, and are his instruments for harassing us”
-John Calvin
b. Wait and persevere
1 Thessalonians 2:18 “because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us.”

It is unusual that Paul inserted his name in the letter at this point; he rarely did so in his inspired writings. The reason here may be that he wished to emphasize again in a different way that it was he himself who truly felt this way. He did not try to return just once, but again and again he sought ways to get back to Thessalonica.

3. When we persevere our joy is often found in those who
God allows us to…
a. Minister to
1 Thessalonians 2:19 “For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you?”
b. Minister with
1 Thessalonians 2:20 “For you are our glory and joy.”
