PRAYER

THE LAST FEW WEEKS WE HAVE SPOKEN ON WHO THE KINGDOM OF GOD HAS COME TO THROUGH JESUS.

Poor in spirit
The mournful
The Meek
If you have missed any of those messages I would suggest you watch them on Youtube.

TODAY WE MOVE TO THE SECOND TRIAD OF THE THE BEATITUDES.

The second of the three triads that make of the Beatitudes is focussed on, what Kingdom Communities in this world are to look like.
——————————————————

JESUS EXPLAINS THE FIRST BEATITUDE WITH THE SECOND AND THIRD.

Matthew 5:6–8 NET
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL, FOR THEY SHALL BE SHOWN MERCY.

Matthew 6:14–15 NET
“For if you forgive others their sins, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive you your sins.
People of mercy know the score and they know how much mercy God has shown them.
People of mercy give generously to those in need and offer forgiveness quickly.
They desire to see people free and reconciled to God and to the Kingdom community.
Mercy is a key marker in Righteousness.

BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART, FOR THEY SHALL SEE GOD.

Matthew 6:1–4 NET
“Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven. Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward. But when you do your giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your gift may be in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
The pure in heart are not mixed in their passions. They have one purpose - righteousness that sets people free.
As we cannot mix oil and vinegar - mud ant water, neither is righteousness to be mixed with any other motive.
The Pure in heart is promised to see God face to face - Only those closest to the King see the King face to face.

NOW LET’S LOOK AT OUR MAIN VERSE.

Matthew 5:6 NASB95
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

NOTE - THE PEOPLE HERE ARE DESCRIBED AS HUNGERING AND THIRSTING FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

They have not experienced it through human systems.
Yet they long for it.
The promise is, in the Kingdom of God they will experience righteousness and be satisfied.

THAT LEADS US TO THE QUESTION OF WHAT IS RIGHTEOUSNESS?

We know it has to do with mercy and purity of heart.
But can we go further?

YES, WE CAN.

Jesus is likely thinking of Isa 11.
Isaiah 11:1–5 NASB95
Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist.
THE HEBREW WORD FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS IS - Tseaqah – Delivering justice that rescues from bondage and restores community. The act of doing what is the right standard towards others.
ANOTHER WORD, JUSTICE IS OFTEN PAIRED IN ISA AND THE PSALMS WITH THE WORD RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Isaiah 32:1 NASB95
Behold, a king will reign righteously And princes will rule justly.
Isaiah 32:15–18 NASB95
Until the Spirit is poured out upon us from on high, And the wilderness becomes a fertile field, And the fertile field is considered as a forest. Then justice will dwell in the wilderness And righteousness will abide in the fertile field. And the work of righteousness will be peace, And the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. Then my people will live in a peaceful habitation, And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places;
HERE THE TERM JUSTICE IN HEBREW IS - MISHPAT - To judge or to administer righteousness in a way that restores and resolves. To administer righteousness. To restore that which is broken.
————————————————-
Righteousness - delivering justice that rescues form bondage and restores community.
Justice - To administer righteousness that restores and resolves. To restore that which is broken.
RIGHTEOUSNESS IS NOT AN INDIVIDUAL ACT BUT RATHER A COMMUNIAL ACT -
RIGHTEOUSNESS IS THE ACT OF RESTORING COMMUNITY AND REMOVING THAT WHICH DESTROYS COMMUNITY.
———————————————-
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS CAN BE SAID TO BE BOTH RIGHTEOUS AND JUST. -
JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE ADMINISTERED BY GOD FOR THE PURPOSE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.
RIGHTEOUS BECAUSE THEY LEAD PEOPLE OUT OF SLAVERY AND BONDAGE, WHOLE PROTECTING THE WEAK AND POSSIBLE VICTIMS.
THEY CREATE A FREE COMMUNITY AND RESTORE COMMUNITY WHENEVER IT IS BROKEN.
——————————————————-

BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

tired of living in a society that is not righteous - Then Jesus offers to us His Kingdom.
His Kingdom not only is righteous and just but it creates a people who are righteous and just.
—————————————————

A NEW COMMUNITY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUSTICE IN AN AGE OF DISPAIRITY AND BONDAGE.

This new community Jesus was building or restoring is set in the midst of Roman occupation.
No justice from Rome to the poor.
No righteousness towards one another.
Broken people breaking people!
A New People under the Kingship of Jesus who gives Just decrees and creates an a culture of justice to one another and others.
Lets see this lived out.
A woman with the issue of blood / Exiled from community / Healed and restored to her community.
Zacheus / Tax collector / Exiled from community for his unjust behavior / Jesus eats with him and other sinners / Zacheus responds to Jesus through repentance / Restored to his community.
Jesus calls out the religious leaders and passes judgment on them for living unrighteously and unjustly. He calls them sons on their father the devil and white washed tombs. Exploited the poor in the temple / put their money in the temple so their parents could not have access to it.
Jesus executed justice and righteousness by driving the money changers out of the temple.
In Acts 2 we see the first Church practice righteousness - sell all they had so those without could be sustained and not rely on sinful acts to live. / Met daily / prayers / teachings / songs/ meals / communion - community.
Even excommunication is seen as an act of righteousness and a just act - 1 Cor Man and mother-in -law excommunicated for sex - why? / body be destroyed by Satan that their souls would be saved. / 2 cor boy repents and Paul tells the Church to welcome Him back into community.
THE HEART OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUSTICE IS TO BE IN COMMUNION WITH GOD AND HIS CHILDREN, TO LIVE IN A WAY THAT RESTORES, RESCUES, AND RESOLVES ALL BROKENESS TO THE FAMILY OF GOD.
James 1:19–27 NET
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger. For human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness. So put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the message implanted within you, which is able to save your souls. But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves. For if someone merely listens to the message and does not live it out, he is like someone who gazes at his own face in a mirror. For he gazes at himself and then goes out and immediately forgets what sort of person he was. But the one who peers into the perfect law of liberty and fixes his attention there, and does not become a forgetful listener but one who lives it out—he will be blessed in what he does.If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile. Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their misfortune and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
IN OTHER WORDS RIGHTEOUSNESS IS MERCY AND A PURE HEART!
—————————————————
CONCLUSION -
God is calling us all to enter into His Kingdom.
A Kingdom of righteousness and justice.
A Kingdom that transforms us into those who practice righteousness and justice together.
Today, I am calling us to repentance -
repent for being divided in our devotion and passions.
repent for how we have at times not shown mercy and forgetting the mercy God has shown us.
MAY GOD USE THIS LITTLE CHURCH TO BE A CITY ON A HILL TO THOSE AROUND US.
May the world see forgiveness here.
May the world see healing here.
May the world see compassion here.
May the world see truth here.
May we be known for reconciliation between man and God and between one another.
May our enemies be shamed by our generosity and graciousness.
May we resemble Jesus above all else!
