Deuteronomy 8:17–18 “You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
How to remember?
Personal experience: Every time we give our tithes and offerings, however difficult it might be in the moment, I remind myself that it all first belongs to him and my provision is not limited to what I can accumulate but rather what He will trust me with.
(Genesis 14) Abraham’s victory over the Kedorlaomer and the 4 armies with his 318 trained men - the impossible victory that was given to him by God. How did Abraham honor God for His divine intervention and purposes? By partaking of the bread and wine and giving his tithe of all he accumulated. He remembered that the victory wasn’t because of his own strength.
In the OT, specifically with King Hezekiah and Nehemiah, when the king is good and turning back to God from idols (essentially remembering Him and His covenant), we see the passover meal celebrated (Jesus - bread and wine) and the people’s lavish giving of tithes and free will offerings.
Perhaps tithing and giving free will offerings to the Lord is much more spiritually powerful than we give it credit for. I am convinced that the moment I would stop faithfully tithing and giving to the Lord is the moment I fall from trusting in Him and what he can do in my life and turn independent (where I go to war on my own).
May you continue to depend on Him and may He prosper your life.
