Introduction:
Good morning, how is everyone doing. it nice to be back and we able to continue with the study on the life of Jesus Christ. Last time we talk about how John was being question on who he was, the Pharisees sent Levi’s and Priest to him to ask these questions, “Are you the Christ, Are you Elijah,Or are you one of the Prophet’s? we had understanding who John the Baptist was. John the Baptist was Elijah in spirit and power Luke 1:17. Remember what the angel told Zachariah. then if we also remember John acknowledge Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God. So, this week we are going to be continuing with the life of Christ this week we are going to be looking at Jesus beginning his ministry and who Jesus Christ is recruiting to help in his ministry.
the Unknown Disciple:
the Unknown Disciple:
From Last week we come to understand that Christ was now beginning his ministry, and beginning to do the Will of God. from this passage we come to understand that most of the writers of the Gospels would go straight to Jesus Christ public work of his ministry. John would talk about the early work of Christ. our main passage for today comes from the Gospel of John. Let turn in our Main Passage John 1:35-51.
35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
Just from this passage we come to see that John his two disciples would spend the day with Christ, learning and studying under him. if you remember from last the last sermon from John’s testimony by calling Christ the Lamb of God back in John 1:29
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
this was the first public of announcement of Christ. another thing to think about are the two disciples that were with John. the first being Andrew who was Simon Peter’s brother. Jn 1:40
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
and the second disciple of John was probably John the author of the fourth account. the reasoning behind this are
there was details given by a eyewitness
John would usually withhold his name when he would write
kind of side not here if this was not John, John was known for not giving his account of discipleship. John was known for not giving himself credit by not naming himself. we can see that through some some scripture. Jn 13:23, Jn 19:26,35, Jn 20:2-8, Jn 21:7,20,24.
Now if we go back to how these three spend their day with Christ. we come to understand that John the baptist and his two disciples spend the day with Christ here because John 1:37-39
We should also take not that John even mentions to his disciple that this was the lamb of God back in verse 36 in John. Jn 1:36
36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”
another thing that was is interesting from this text is that we see that it gives the exact time of day when the disciples were studying with Christ. in verse 39 of John. John 1:39
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
the reasoning that this interesting if we assume that this unknown disciple is actually John himself. this occasion was very memorable moment for them. that John was able to remember the exact time. Its quit interesting in itself to because of how the Jewish people kept time during this period in history. if John kept to the Jewish table of time, would be sunrise to sundown, and sundown to sunrise. which would make it 4 pm for them, on the other hand if they were keeping roman time it would make the time 10 am. we also understand that the gospel of John was written after the destruction of Jerusalem, which would mean that John probably used the time table from Roman standard view. Most writers think that was the most possibly time table John was using.
Calling of the Disciple’s:
Calling of the Disciple’s:
After several hours with Christ we come to see that the other disciple of John Andrew. Andrew is was different from the other disciple lets turn in our Bible John 1:40-42
You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
we should notice couple of things from this passage here:
the first thing is that Andrew informs his brother about finding of Christ or Messiah in verse 41
we also see that Andrew had talent to bring others to Christ.
We come to see these events unfold from these verse here let’s turn in our Bibles to John 6:8-9
John 6:8–9 (NKJV)
8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?”
From this verse here we see that that is was during the time of feed the five thousand people that had come to listen to Jesus, and the disciples of christ were trying to figure out on how they were going to feed this many people. if you notice here Andrew brings someone who had five barley loaves and two small fish. we can also look at John 12:20-22
20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. 21 Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
from this we come to see that people had wish to see Jesus. So, they approached one of the disciples and Andrew and Philip told Jesus about this. about this time those who were following Jesus were beginning to recognized who Jesus really was. because if we go back to Andrew’s brother Simon who would be later call Cephas or Peter. the first name being Aramaic, and the second being Greek. both of the names translate to mean Rock. Jesus was able to see the possibilities within people. Jesus was able to see the what was in the hearts of man, and today Jesus still see the heart of those who chose to follow him. from this Jesus prepares to journey out to Galilee and he begins to call out others like Philip. turn in your Bibles to Jn 1:43
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”
Thus begins statement “Follow Me” throughout the Bible Christ talks about what it means to follow God. lets continue with Jn 1:45-46
Ladder of God
Ladder of God
From these two verse here we come to see that Philip was also able to bring other to Christ, from these two verse from the main passage Philip finds a men name Nathanael and brings him to Christ. Nathanael was Astonish by Christ, and how Christ was able to reveal details of his character, and details of his personal life. turn Bible to Jn 1:47-49
From this we see that Nathanael Confess that Jesus was Christ. then if we continue with this to verse 50 of Jn 1:50
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”
From this verse here we see the continuation of conversation between Christ and Nathanael. Jesus Christ reveals that He will see greater things than these if he chose to trust and to follow him. if we continue with Jn 1:51
51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
From this passage we come to see that Christ was probably hinting about the meaning behind Gen 28:12
12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
The ladder of God. Jacob had a dream about a ladder out in the wilderness. Christ is the Ladder that will connect mankind back to God. it is because of Christ that we are able to have this connect even in John 14:6-7
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
and we also have Heb 4:15-16
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Because of these two passage in scripture we come to understand that the only way to know God is to know who Christ is. Christ understand’s us because he understand the limitations of the flesh. this all because his death on the Cross. another thing to add to our list of things that Christ does for mankind is that Jesus Christ is the ladder for mankind to able to climb to God.
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
at the end of the day we must come to recognized that in our Life we must come to know Christ. our time in this life is short. if you remember the term Bible: B: Basic, Instruction, Before, Leaving, Earth, but in order to leave this Earth we must first know our King is. Jesus Christ is the only way to know who God is John 14:6-7
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
We have some who knows our pain, our struggles in this life, our suffering, our joy, our happiness, and our limitation of the flesh because there going to come a day when we will come to the throne of God, I may not know when that day will come. so if you have question, or if you are seeking for a Church home, or wishing to be Baptized please come forward as we stand and sing.
