21 Days of Prayer

You Guys are Stinking Amazing!
Let’s Jump into today’s message.
If you are new to our church today, it would be helpful for you to know that we practice a form of preaching called “Expository Preaching”.
What that means, is we believe the Bible is best taught by taking books of the Bible and then breaking them down from beginning to end, chapter by chapter, verse by verse. Our goal, to better understand not only what God’s Word says, but what it means in our lives today.
We are currently walking through the NT book of Matthew.
Last week we Started Chapter 8.
Matthew 8:14–17 CSB
14 Jesus went into Peter’s house and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 So he touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and began to serve him. 16 When evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed. He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick, 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: He himself took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.
So as we back up to Matthews Main Theme for this section of the Story.
He is establishing Jesus’ Power as the Promised King.
He will demonstrate Jesus’ ability.

Jesus’ Ability To Heal the Body

Jesus’ Power over Creation

Jesus’ Authority over the Spirit Realm

In this Section we find Jesus Still in Capernaum His Head quarters for ministry since being rejected in Nazareth.
Capernaum was located on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee. Strategically located along a busy highway known as the Via Maris meaning in Latin “Way of the Sea”. This Highway was a major trade route that connected Egypt through the land of Isreal and then to Mesopotamia.
Being Headquartered here meant that word of Jesus’ works spread quickly.
It is Shabbath or as we call is the Sabbath.
Mark tells us that prior to Jesus’ healing of Peter MIL he had just cast a demon out of a guy in church.
Mark 1:21–28 CSB
21 They went into Capernaum, and right away he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. 22 They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes. 23 Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out, 24 “What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25 Jesus rebuked him saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, and so they began to ask each other, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 At once the news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee.
Here’s the Issue: Jesus just broke the rules by Doing this on the Sabbath.
Again this shows his Kingship over man made rules.
Don’t work on the Sabbath.......
Then the Head to Peters for the Traditional Post Service Meal.........
Matthew 8:14 CSB
14 Jesus went into Peter’s house and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.
This would have been detrimental to this woman.
All Three writers state this differently
Mark 1:29–30 CSB
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went into Simon and Andrew’s house with James and John. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once.
Luke 4:38 CSB
38 After he left the synagogue, he entered Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her.
The Greek would suggest that this was a chronic problem this woman faced and she had most likely been sick for some time.
Here is what we need to note.
Each writer has a different purpose for their Gospel account.

Matthew’s Theme is Kingship

Matthew 8:15 (CSB)
15 So he touched her hand, and the fever left her.
The mere touch of the King is sufficient to to bring healing.

Mark’s Theme is the Messiah’s Perfect Servant hood

Mark 1:31 (CSB)
31 So he went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up.

Luke’s Theme is that Jesus is the Ideal Man

Luke 4:39 (CSB)
39 So he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.
These are not contradictions............This is what happens in eyewitness testamony.
All State that immediately the sickness left her and that she had the strength to get up and Serve them but Matthew concentrates on her serving the King
Matthew 8:15 (CSB)
15 So he touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she got up and began to serve him.
Matthew 8:16–17 CSB
16 When evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed. He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick, 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: He himself took our weaknesses and carried our diseases.
This signifies the beginning of a new day.........
Matthew again points out fullfillment of Prophecy......
Isaiah chapter 53 allows for both Physical and spiritual aspects of healing.......
Let’s not forget the most important work of the Messiah is to take away our sins as a guilt offering..........
Isaiah 53:11 CSB
11 After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities.
We should also remember that although we still believe Jesus heals today, we are not guaranteed healing on this side of eternity.
There are far to many examples of healings that did not happen in both the Bible and our modern day lives as godly believers.
Just listen to Paul
2 Corinthians 12:6–10 CSB
6 For if I want to boast, I wouldn’t be a fool, because I would be telling the truth. But I will spare you, so that no one can credit me with something beyond what he sees in me or hears from me, 7 especially because of the extraordinary revelations. Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to torment me so that I would not exalt myself. 8 Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. 10 So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Would you say that Paul did not have enough faith to be healed?
There is some mystery why God does not always heal in every case, yet clearly he uses these cases many times to teach his children different lessons.
However there is a day that will come when the physical aspect of Jesus’ work will be fully realized by all who call on his name (Revelation 21:4).
Revelation 21:4 CSB
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.
Would you stand with me this morning.
