Recap

1 John - where he address the mostly Jewish house churches, experiencing a falling away, and division of church leaders.
Topic areas of discussion
The transition leading to Salvation: We pivoted from the sacrifice of Christ who knew no sin, taking our sin, so that we may become His righteousness. Because of His sacrifice, we are reconciled to the father and have become coheirs with Christ.
a.1 John 3:16 “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.”
2. We as overcomers: After receiving the sacrifice of Christ, we become reborn in Christ. Those who have been born in Christ, have access to overcome the world in His strength through the enabling of the Holy Spirit working in and through you.
a. 1 John 5:4–5 “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
2. The testimony: The Holy Spirit testifies of our assurance in Christ. The the fact that Christ is the Son of the living God, and whoever believes on Him, has eternal life (Blessed Assurance).
a. 1 John 5:11 “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

Background

The book of John, although not named is trusted to be authored by John, who also wrote the Book of Revelations and the 1, 2, and 3 letters of John. Between 85-90 AD. It is believed to be one of the last books of the Bible to be written, addressing a population that were already familiar with the books of Matt, MK, and Luke, so it contains additional information not written in the other gospels.

The Good Shepherd

The non popular answer because they are not His sheep: John 10:24–25 “So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me,”

My Sheep know my voice

We’ve answered to call to salvation, so now we know the voice of our shepherd because we are His sheep: John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

In The Father’s Hands

Our assurance does not come our works, our successes or failures, our assurance comes from our faith in Christ. Christ is the one that gives eternal life; and declares that we shall never perish. Once in His hands there is no one that can remove us: John 10:28–30 “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.””
