Reading

Deuteronomy 5:16–33 ESV
“ ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. “ ‘You shall not murder. “ ‘And you shall not commit adultery. “ ‘And you shall not steal. “ ‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. “ ‘And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’ “These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. And as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live. Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’ “And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever! Go and say to them, “Return to your tents.” But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.’ You shall be careful therefore to do as the Lord your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.

Sermon

5th Commandment

Deuteronomy 5:16 ESV
“ ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
Honour - take into consideration, be considerate to
Positive command and prominance shows how important this is
Honouring parents >>> Stable Family Life >>> Stable nation
An inward attitude that expresses itself in both speech and actions
As the Lord your God commanded you
That your days may be long
That it may go well with you in the Land that the Lord your God is giving you
The remainder deal with aspects that damage our relationships....

6th Commandment

Deuteronomy 5:17 ESV
“ ‘You shall not murder.
Murder: Carelessness, neglect, malice or violence
Does not include capital punishment or war
preservation of life is a key concept throught Deuteronomy
Jesus reminds us that it includes emotions, such as anger/hate/contempt, which lead to murder

7th Commandment

Deuteronomy 5:18 ESV
“ ‘And you shall not commit adultery.
Faithlessness in marriage
Inward attitude expressed through outward actions
Sex before marriage - can destroy a marriage before it has even started
Consequences - broken relationships, abortion, mixed-up children, single parents unable to cope

8th Commandment

Deuteronomy 5:19 ESV
“ ‘And you shall not steal.
Principal in Leviticus
Each clan/family had its own inheritance and this was inalienable
Through poverty a family might seell its land temporarily
At the time of Jubilee it had to be returned to its inheritors
God owns the land and people have no right to buy and sell it
Goods and possessions are fruits of work
Deuteronomy emphasizes the importance of provision being made for the widows, orphans/fatherless, immigrants and the Levites
Stealing is a denial of brotherliness or neighbourliness
Treating someone as if they don’t count
Denying someone what is rightfully theirs (e.g. withhold)
NB: not including failing to repay (lending should be done without expectation of interest or repayment)

9th Commandment

Deuteronomy 5:20 ESV
“ ‘And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Slander and gossip
Relating what is true in order to injure the reputation of another
We must be mindful of ...
Proverbs 10:12 ESV
Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.
This does not mean we should over look the seriousness of speaking what is false
There is a world of difference between speaking the truth in love compared to speaking it without love

10th Commandment

Deuteronomy 5:21 ESV
“ ‘And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’
Covet: Inner desire of something belonging to another
Ultimately these are desires which damage the relationship with your neighbour
or relationships even in your own home
Envy makes people barely civil

Israel responds to the voice of God

Deuteronomy 5:22–27 ESV
“These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’
God called Israel to Horeb
Instructed Moses he would meet with Him
Instructed the people not to touch the mountain, punishment would be death
Here is the account when God spoke...
Exodus 19:16–20 ESV
On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder. The Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. And the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.
Thunder: Sound of Voice (thunderous)
Return...
Deuteronomy 5:22–27 ESV
“These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’
We should take heed of the words of the Israelites
We have not heard the voice of God speaking to us, neither should we seek for such an experience or expect it.
Our response should be the same “We will hear and do it

The LORD responds to the words of Israel

Deuteronomy 5:28–33 ESV
“And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me.
God desires His people to be obedient and to fear Him
Ezekiel 33:11 ESV
Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?
Moses finishes speaking of what happened in the past
In view of what they said in the past, and what God has done for them, they need to be careful to obey all that He has commanded them
Obedience allows us to receive God’s richest blessings
disobedience disqualifies us
