Philippians 4:1 NKJV
Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.
Philippians 4:2 NKJV
I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.
Philippians 4:3 NKJV
And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.
Philippians 4:4 NKJV
Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
Philippians 4:5 NKJV
Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
Philippians 4:6 NKJV
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
Philippians 4:7 NKJV
and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:8 NKJV
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
Philippians 4:9 NKJV
The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
Philippians 4:10 NKJV
But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity.
Philippians 4:11 NKJV
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:
Philippians 4:12 NKJV
I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
Philippians 4:13 NKJV
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
In this passage, I see theme of RESILIENCE with 4 keys:
1) Rejoice
2) Refocus (focus again; change emphasis or direction)
3) Remain
4) Receive

Receive

Philippians 4:13 NIV
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13 (AMP)
I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who minfuses inner strength into me; I am nself-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency].
Two conditional things in this passage that we receive from God:
Peace
Strength
We receive Peace when we:
1. Take our needs to God in Prayer
2. Do the things we already know to do.
Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:9 NKJV
9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

“God’s presence is unconditional. God’s favor is conditional.” - Elder John Gauthier

We receive Strength when we:
Practice contentment
Remain steadfast in blessings and difficulties

Today we will focus on Remaining Steadfast in Blessings and Difficulties

Philippians 4:12 NKJV
12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

1) Understand the Meaning of Abundance

abased = live humbly
abound = live in prosperity
Abound is the root of abundance. It literally means “to go over and above the number”
Abundance is seen in John 6 when Jesus feeds the 5000. It was a humble meal - fish and bread. But it became an abundant meal because there was more that enough.
Leftovers are abundance??

Abundance is anything above what is required.

Financial
Physical
Material
Spiritual
Regardles of circumstance, you can live in a mindset of abundace

2) Know the Purpose for Abundance

Philippians 4:14–20 NKJV
14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. 15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. 16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. 17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. 18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. 19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Purpose of Abundance: Giving and Good Works

2 Corinthians 9:8 NKJV
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.

Regardless of circumstance, you can live in a mindset of abundance, be cause God supplies every need.

3) Acknowledging Your Source of Abundance Brings Strength to Stand in Difficult Times

Psalm 121 NKJV
A Song of Ascents. 1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? 2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. 8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.

“Help” - help, one who helps, succour (assistance and support in times of hardship and distress)

John 14:15–17 NKJV
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Helper - Greek - parakletos - advocate, helper, intercessor

“one summoned to come alongside and assist”

4) Feeding on the Right Things Gives Us Resilient Strength

1 Kings 19:11–19 NKJV
11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.” 15 Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. 18 Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.” 19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle on him.
2 Timothy 2:4–6 NKJV
4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops.
2 Timothy 2:7 NKJV
7 Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.
Entangle = Greek: Empleko - to be involved
From the root: pleko - weave, plait

Strength in difficult circumstances requires focus on the mission.

Jeremiah 15:16 NKJV
16 Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.
1 Peter 4:11 (ESV)
11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
