Conflict throughout history, Pt. II (Lesson 22) 8/20/24

Introduction:

Last week we saw the conflict throughout the ages with the “Seed of woman” and the “Seed of Satan.” We saw this between
* Cain and Able
* Daughters of men and sons of God
* Barren womb and abundant promise.
* And, finally famine and family.
Our Lesson today will continue on that. Our looking at the conflict throughout history.

Aim:

* To further study the historical events concerning this conflict (struggle).
* To impress upon our minds the ability of God to work out what He says He will do (read: Rom4:21)
Romans 4:21 NASB95
21 and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.

Outline:

* Pharoah and the enslaved people (ref: Gen50:22-26)
* This is when the people were in Egypt, Joseph cared for his people until he died and they were all in Egypt
* (read: Exo1:8-11)
Exodus 1:8–11 NASB95
8 Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we. 10 “Come, let us deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and depart from the land.” 11 So they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses.
* Then summarize (exo1:12-22)
* Pharoah made lives bitter with hard labor
* Spoke to midwives to kill born male children
* Midwives feared God
* Command given to “all his people” to cast all the sons who are born into the Nile, keep the daughters.
* The enslaved people were people of the promise (land, seed) (Gal3:16) under Pharoah they were doomed to extinction at the command of the murder of all male born children.
Turn to (Gal3:16)
Galatians 3:16 NASB95
16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
* The situation may seem hopeless to the people, but God (you have to love anytime you see that in scripture) Jehovah God had a man for the hour (Turn to Exo3:4-10) you can read more on him in the chapter of faith (ref: Heb11:23-29)
Exodus 3:4–10 NASB95
4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then He said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 He said also, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. 7 The Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters, for I am aware of their sufferings. 8 “So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. 9 “Now, behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to Me; furthermore, I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 “Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.”
*Note: God always protected the seed line to bring the Messiah, even from under the oppression of Egypt and others over the centuries. God keeps His promise. Satan and his seed do not win this battle, nor will they win this war!
* Evil Attempts and David
* Summarize 1Sam16:1-13
* God told Samuel stop grieving, fill you horn with oil, take sacrifice and go to Jessie the Bethelmite.
* There I will show you what to do
* (have someone read 1Sam16:6-7
1 Samuel 16:6–7 NASB95
6 When they entered, he looked at Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
* Samuel went through the sons, asked Jessie if any others, came to David the roddy one (v.12) he was the one God chose, and Samuel anointed him and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily.
* Then by Goliath and Saul (ref: 1Sam17:1-51, 1Sam18:9-11, 19:1, 8-12 too)
* Then his very son Absalom (ref: 2Sam15:1ff).
* But GOD! Regardless of the tough, trying times, the persecutions, God is with David, the royal seed, offspring through whom the Christ would come was preserved. God preserves the “seed of the woman.”
* Devilish woman and the seed royal (2Kng11:1ff)
* This is the riveting story of the usurped throne by the devilish woman Athaliah (by the way is Jezebels daughter).
* She usurped the throne, killed all the royal line (seed)
* So, is the seed of woman crushed and is no more?
* Has Satan won?
* Has God’s promise failed?
* Oh wait, there was one preserved seed, Joash (turn 2Kng11:2-3)
2 Kings 11:2–3 NASB95
2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and placed him and his nurse in the bedroom. So they hid him from Athaliah, and he was not put to death. 3 So he was hidden with her in the house of the Lord six years, while Athaliah was reigning over the land.
* But God ! one more time, through the ages the seed of woman, the royal seed, the kingly line is protected!
* Death and Hezekiah (2Kng18:1-20:21)
* Hezekiah is terminally ill (read 2Kng20:1-3
2 Kings 20:1–3 NASB95
1 In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.’ ” 2 Then he turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, saying, 3 “Remember now, O Lord, I beseech You, how I have walked before You in truth and with a whole heart and have done what is good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
* He was the heir, the seed and if he would have died what would happen to the seed line of woman?
* It would be done, and God’s promise not true
* But God! God almighty time and time shows His providential power in sustaining the “seed of woman.”
* Satan suffers defeat after defeat. Yet there is more to come next week as the battle through the ages continues

Conflict throughout history, Pt. III (Lesson 23) 8/20/24 if time permits

Introduction:

If we are doing this at the same time as Lesson 22, this is the last segment for conflict throughout the ages.
* This conflict we have seen between Satan and his offspring and the Woman and her offspring
* The conflict started in the garden and has continued and at times it appeared that Satan was going to win and the seed of woman destroyed, BUT GOD steps in always and keeps His word and preserved the seed of woman that would lead to our Savior.

Aim:

* To continue to see this conflict as it culminates in the conflict of conflicts
* Also, for us to learn 4-truths from this historical sketch of human history and conflict.

Outline:

* Wicked Haman and the Jewish remnant (ref: Est3:1-7:10)
* Haman was very envious and selfish, his selfishness mixed with his power brings about a planned death sentence for the Jews (ref: Est3:1-6)
* Haman has the kings ear, Xerxes, makes the decree to destroy the Jews (turn to Est3:13)
Esther 3:13 NASB95
13 Letters were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces to destroy, to kill and to annihilate all the Jews, both young and old, women and children, in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to seize their possessions as plunder.
* But God, are you loving that term now? You can see that in the New Testament too, should always catch our attention. And when you use it make it attention getting to the person or people you are sharing God’s word with. - - - But God, brings about the means, through Esther, to preserve the seed of woman
* Turn to (Est4:14)
Esther 4:14 NASB95
14 “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”
* Turn to (Est5:3)
Esther 5:3 NASB95
3 Then the king said to her, “What is troubling you, Queen Esther? And what is your request? Even to half of the kingdom it shall be given to you.”
* Turn to (Est6:1-3)
Esther 6:1–3 NASB95
1 During that night the king could not sleep so he gave an order to bring the book of records, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. 2 It was found written what Mordecai had reported concerning Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs who were doorkeepers, that they had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus. 3 The king said, “What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” Then the king’s servants who attended him said, “Nothing has been done for him.”
* Again if Satan would have succeeded the seed line would not carry through, even after the captivity in Babylon (Ref: Mt1:12-17)
* Herod and the infant slaughter (Mt2:1ff)
* Jesus born (ref: Mt2:1)
* He is the one mentioned in (turn to Gen3:15) (reference also in notes Gal4:4; Isa7:14, and Gal3:16)
Genesis 3:15 NASB95
15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
* This is “that” which Satan had throughout the ages, tried to prevent, Jesus, the Messiahs birth.
* Satan uses Herod to murder male children in Bethlehem (Turn to Lk2:16)
Luke 2:16 NASB95
16 So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.
* Did not work, God preserved the child and had family move to Egypt for a timed (ref: Lk2:13-14, 19-23).
* Did you know that Jeremiah prophesied about this attack? (ref: Jer31:15)
* there is more to come, the fulfilling of bruising heal (ref: Gen3:15) has not come yet, but it is coming.
* Next, Jesus and an encounter with Satan (Mt4:1-11)
* You know the passage, the temptations passage
* Jesus does not succumb and Satan leaves for a more opportune time. He does the same with people today, attacks, withdraws and comes again, maybe another way, but He wants to stop you, detour you, distract you, destroy you and keep you from fulfilling God’s purpose in your life. A gospel preacher who can rightly divide the word!
* The seed cannot be destroyed by Herod’s scheme or Satan’s temptation. Yet there is more conflict to come so let’s press on
* The Conflict between the Jews and Jesus (turn to Jn11:53)
John 11:53 NASB95
53 So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.
* As you know there is a continual attempt to persecute and execute Jesus.
* Satan grand plan, his grand finale where he thinks he has won and trampled down the seed of woman was at the hands of lawless men (i.e. the Romans)
* We can read the betrayal (Jn13:18, 27)
* The trial (Mt26:59)
* And the cross (Act2:23)
* In fact Let’s look them up turn to the scriptures above if time permits
* Satan’s plan, Satan’s plot, Satan’s execution, murder of Jesus was an evil act that God used for the good, fulfilling His eternal plan, His scheme of redemption. Now, let that sink in for a minute or two.
* Some scriptures to consider and look up on your own (Act2:23, 3:14-15, 13:23-39)
* Oh, wait, time for another BUT GOD raised up Jesus (Turn to Rom1:4) Declaring Jesus to the be the Son of God
Romans 1:4 NASB95
4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,
* As promised (ref: Rom1:2)
* As promised born of the seed of David (Rom1:3)
* and declared the Son of God with power as we just read.
Note: The seed of woman is victorious and triumphant! Satan’s head (his power) is crushed by Jesus heal (His death) and his rising on the 3rd day to fulfill scripture for now death has lost its sting, the victory is won. God has fulfilled His eternal purpose in and through the seed of woman, Jesus Christ
Note: there yet is more conflict through the ages that will happen between the Dragon (Satan; Rev12:17, 17:14) and the Lord’s church.

Conclusion:

* The promise of God (redemption)
* Happened because of the providence of God (protecting the seed)
* Brought defeat to the enmity, the adversary in history past, and will in times to come
* God’s eternal purpose stands and in God’s church his people are more than overcomers, we are victors, now go and preach that, go and teach that!
