Luke 19:45-48

Theme: Entering Jerusalem
Key verse: v.2
48 verses; 1047 words
Grade: 5.2
Outline:
I. The Conversion of Zacchaeus. Verses 1-10
II. The Parable of the Pounds. Verses 11-27
III. The Approach to Jerusalem. Verses 28-44
IV. The Cleansing of the Temple. Verses 45-48
This passage is in all four Gospels. Why?
It shows in Matthew 21:12-17 the sellers sold doves and the chief priests and scribes were sore displeased. It focuses on the religious crowd.
In Mark 11:15-18 we see the sellers would not allow anyone to carry a vessel through the temple. Obviously they had some authority even though they were never given any according to Scripture.
While in John 2:13-16 we learn they were sitting. In the OT temple or tabernacle there was no place of sitting allowed. In this passage Jesus made a scourge of small cords and drove them out while “turning the tables” on them!
We learn here about cleaning up the temple. Here are the STEPS to getting the temple clean:

I. The Designated Work Of Jesus. v.45

45 And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;

II. The Declared Words Of Jesus. v.46

46 Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

III. The Demonstrated Walk Of Jesus. v.47

He taught the people. v.47
47 And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
The people gave Him their full attention. v.48
48 And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

Conclusion:

This is a picture of where we are now.
The Lord wants His temple (“your body is the temple” 1 Corinthians 6:19).
He enters and gets rid of those things “sitting” and doing nothing.
Jesus wants to teach us. Keep His Book open so He can.
