Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Our church family is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, and we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit.
We are reaching out to our family, friends, and neighbors as the body of Christ.

TODAY: The Habit of (Godly) Sorrow…Get Rid Of Your Guilt

Change Life - Change Habits | Change Habits - God Heart
Not Learning This Habit will…
Keep you living in shame.
Keep you distant from God.
Keep you from fulfilling your calling.
Opening Scripture:
Habit of Godly Sorrow…
2 Corinthians 7:9–10 “9 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”
Godly Sorrow > Repentance > Salvation
Worldly Sorrow > Remorse > Spiritual Death
Can’t speak for you—I Am Expert—Finding fault in others!
Excuses—My own shortcomings—(Know who needs this msg!)
(Easy to point out…Speck) (Ignore/Rationalize/Justify…Log)

We tend to accuse others and excuse ourselves.

Especially today—Everything in culture…“Rebranding Sin.”
Some—Word “sin” … Too strong
Didn’t SIN…Mistake—My truth—Who RU tell me—Sin for me?
Sanitize—Didn’t tell a LIE …Fib. Exaggerate. Stretch truth.
God calls sex outside marriage—Fornication…Cohabitation.
Cohab…Easy rationalize—Save $—See how it goes—Wouldn’t buy car …
Scripture says—Drunks won’t inherit Kingdom of God…Party/Unwind.
·Gossip…Sharing out of concern—Sister Sara did—Pray.
Music listen—Movies watch—See SM feed… Entertained by sin.
Isaiah 5:20 “20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!”

Changing the wording doesn’t change the sin.

“Sin” = Hamartia—Archery—Miss mark.
MISSING GOD’S STANDARD
Romans 3:23 “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Talk about sin? Feel bad enough—Eat my donut.

Until you see yourself as a sinner, you won’t see your need for a Savior.

Sinned—Caught Cheating—Sorry—Felt Remorse.
Once saved we no longer have sin nature but we are still impacted by sin because of the world we live in!

Remorse is not the same as repentance.

Remorse-Feel bad—What you did.
Repentance-Feel bad—What did—Turn from it.
Sin and being caught is REMORSE but not REPENTANCE.
Sorry for what being caught “COST YOU”
Has your heart grown cold towards God?
Some of you—Did something wrong—Still defensive.
Make excuses—Blame someone—Something—Not my fault.
Sorry—Sorry caught—Sorry it hurt you…Blind how it hurt others.
Instead of drawing you to God…Run from him.
Don’t recognize yourself—No idea how you got here.
Christian—Wake up—Discover
Not as close to God—Once were.
Why don’t I feel God? …Sin separates us from God (us not Him).
Out in cold—Covered clothes—(Hat/Gloves/Scarf)—Can’t feel cold.
Out in world—Covered in SIN—Can’t feel God.
Sin you’ve befriended?
Sin you’ve gotten comfortable with?
Jealous—Perfect hair—Perfect kids—More shoes Oprah.
Hurt you—Holding on to anger—Materialism—Nice things.
Cheat in school—God’s name vain—Comfort eating.
Self-med—Watching porn again.
Rationalize it?—No big deal—Not prob—Quit any time.
Not my fault—One thing—Not as bad as most people!

Rationalizing your sin is the first sign your heart is growing cold.

Sin you’ve befriended?
Worldly Sorrow…May feel bad—Lacks repentance.
Godly Sorrow…Different.
Godly Sorrow—Deep—Sincere Brokenness—You’ve done wrong.
Marked by genuine—Humility—Grief—Not caught—Sinned.
Heartfelt Repentance to God
Re…Pent. (Turn to God’s Higher Standard)

Confess quickly. Repent wholeheartedly.

1 John 1:9 “9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
When you…Confess—He forgives you.
Sin—Confess—Leave door open—Repent Wholeheartedly …
Receiving God’s undeserved mercy grace
Changes you—Different.
Confess Quickly
Repent Wholeheartedly.
Pastor Craig’s Friend battling w/ porn.
Still fighting—Good news is … Still fighting.
Why haven’t I overcome?
Your repentance?…Confess—Do again.
How have you turned away? Closed door?
Smart phone—Dumb phone.
In the Beatitudes, Jesus said …Matthew 5:4 “4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Greek Word—Jesus—Comfort those who mourn their sin (see 1 Cor. 5:2).
Similar—Woman caught in adultery—Jesus knelt. (a picture of comforting her in her sin)
John 8:11 “11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.””
Conclusion/Reflection:
Can you see how much God loves you?
Romans 2:4 “4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
Not God’s…Anger—Wrath—Justice—Leads to you repentance.
Love—Grace—Kindness that leads you to repentance.
One habit—Devil doesn’t want you to adopt.
Keep you—Living shame—Distant God
Keep from fulfill calling.
Worldly Sorrow…Covers. Minimizes. Rationalizes.
Godly Sorrow…Confesses quickly. Repents wholehearted.
Leads to salvation—Leaves no regret.

Talk It Over

Read 2 Corinthians 7:9-10. What are some ways godly sorrow is different than worldly sorrow?
Talk about some of the dangers that come with rationalizing sin. How could this have a negative impact on your relationship with God and others?
Do you need to confess and repent because of a current sin in your life? Use this time to talk about that with your LifeGroup, and then spend time praying together.
