Today we are going to be looking at Mark Ch 5… V21-34… Mark Ch 5 v.21-34 It says… Before we read I want to give you a little context

Context:

This section of Mark is often referred to as… Home - of the Hopeless. Why? If you notice the theme of the last few weeks you will notice there have been several hopeless and nearly impossible situations. In every situation we we Jesus’s Kingdom-Authority… is more than enough in each situation.

Here is whats important to know… Jesus is revealing how his Kingdom… has Authority in every realm of life on Earth.

First we see Jesus’s…

Kingdom Authority over NATURE

As he calms the seas,,, that troubles the disciples.

Next we see His…

Kingdom Authority over the DEMONIC REALM

Last week Pastor Krista did an amazing job teaching on the demonic man. We saw how… no one was able to tame the demoniac, but Jesus.

Which leads us to our story today in Mark 5… as Jesus puts his authority on display once again.. and here we see his..

Kingdom Authority over SICKNESS and DEATH

Mark 5:21–34 (ESV)

And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jai-rus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And he went with him.

And a great crowd followed him…. and thronged about him. And there was a woman… who had-had … a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered-much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better… but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said… “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body… that she was healed of her disease.

And Jesus, perceiving in himself… that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd… and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” And he looked around to see who had done it.

But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling… and fell down before him… and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

Transition: the title of our message today is...

Sermon Title | Living On Empty

Before we get into the message today I want to make a statement. Moment of Balance - this is one story of healing in the bible… it would be foolish of me to not address the reality that…

All across scripture we see both physcal suffering AND physical healing.

In fact Jn 16:33 tells us…

In this world you WILL have Tribulations

So… I’m NOT here to PROMISE you NOTHING but prosperity, and healing w/no suffering… thats NOT the Gospel.

As we are going to see today- scripture is ALSO clear that GOD IS A HEALER

I do NOT know why he heals one and not the other.

Some want to say its because they DID NOT have ENOUGH FAITH.

Friends, scripture describes that…. it just takes a little bit of faith… faith of a mustard seed… you either have faith whether its a little or a lot or you have none. It’s still up to Gods providence… as to when he chooses to heal… and his ways are not our ways…

Our only Job is to maintain our trust in him and hope in him.

Introduction

On the way to healing Jai-rus’s daughter.. Mark tells this story of the woman with the Issue of Blood as Jesus Demonstrates his power over Sickness .

I would like to point out 2 things I notice in this story ….

The first thing I want you to notice IN YOUR NOTES is…

The SUFFERING. v.25-26

We see this in this story that this woman suffered in every way.

I have to admit that there are some situations as a Pastor that I walk into and I wonder…. with their given circumstances, how is this person doing so well? As for this woman… She literally… had everything going against her.

Let’s step into her shoes for a moment to understand her suffering.

As we look at her in this text we see she suffered in many ways… IN YOUR NOTES… that…

She suffered PHYSICALLY. v. 25

We see in v. 25… for 12 years. Most scholars describe her blood loss as menstrual bleeding. As far as we see… this woman had a terminal disease.

Think about the Physcal reality of constant bleeding:

This woman was most likely anemic… meaning she had a lack of healthy blood…

She would’ve had no energy at all… even the minimal duties of life would leave her worn out and exhausted. … and she was.

Ever been there before?

You might not have a terminal disease, but life has its way of depleting us… until are… living on empty.

This woman didn’t just suffer physically… IN YOUR NOTES… we also notice

‌‌She suffered EMOTIONALLY. v. 25, Lev. 15:25-28

We see this in V. 25… it says that she SUFFERED much… under many physicians.

From Dr to Dr… one prescription after another…. and nothing was working…

Day after day… week after week… and year after year… for 12 years.

Talk about left with no hope.

The bible does NOT directly say, but with the surrounding context… many believe she was a Jewish woman which would have made her subject to the Jewish Purity laws… These laws declared her UNCLEAN… Which put an additional strain on her emotional health.

What does it mean to be….

Unclean in the Ancient world

In the Ancient world people we’re on high alert when it came to heath conditions… because they didn’t have the medical and hygiene knowledge we have today. So they had lots of laws to help stop the spread of sickness and disease.

In addition… many saw sickness as a sign of Gods judgement… So she was not just a helpless sick person… but in the eyes of many she must done something to cause this sickness.

In the Old Testament, according to the law… a woman was considered unclean during her menstrual cycle. But this woman’s blood…. flowed continuously, not just once a month. So her new status in life was UNCLEAN.

According to Leviticus 15… it lays out the law… for women experiencing their menstrual cycles… it say’s…

Her family was to refrain from lying in her bed, sitting on her seat, or touching her.

In other words… No one could touch her or her stuff and she could touch no one or their stuff

Those contaminated by her had to purify themselves by bathing and laundering their clothes and they remained unclean until the evening.

Being unclean also ment that you could not bring sacrifices to the temple and worship God according to the law.

For many women this was temporary…. but not this woman. It was her life for the last 12 years:

This had a huge affect on her family and social life - where we receive our emotional support and development.

Can you imagine not being touched by another human for 12 years and being excluded from normal social interactions for 12 years.

This would have put a massive strain on all her relationships and caused her major emotional suffering

we also see… IN YOUR NOTES…

‌‌She suffered FINANCIALLY. v. 26, 1 Pet. 5:7

She obviously she could not work around others…. We also know as a 1st century woman in her condition… this left her with little income opportunity.

Some historians would say that this reduced her to a life of begging for scraps of food from a distance. Her condition left her on the fringes of society.

We see in v.26 that she spent all she had on Dr’s… and despite their efforts… this poor lady went form bad to worse. She was sick and poor…

she - was - living on EMPTY

Anyone know what its like to suffer?

You might not be suffering to the extent of this woman… if you know what its like to be without either physcal heath, emotional well being or the basic financial means… for food and shelter… you know what its like to suffer.

This woman is a picture of someone who is under a very HEAVY BURDEN…

Today… if you are carrying a heavy burden in this house… I believe this message today… is Jesus’s way… of saying to you…. I SEE YOU. I care about you… I am here to comfort you…

1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…

Question: Do I have any cares to cast on Jesus?

Do you have any worries to give to Jesus today?

What is this woman going to do with her Heavy Burden?

To answer this… lets take a look at the 2nd thing I notice in this story… IN YOUR NOTES… I NOTICE

The STRATEGY. v.27 , Matt. 11:28, Jn. 16:33

We can see in v. 27…. that this desperate, lonely…. broke-woman had HEARD about someone named Jesus who could help her… we don’t know how she heard… was it just by eves dropping… or if some other healed person caring person telling her Jesus was coming and perhaps he would heal her? I don’t know… but we see here that

Her STRATEGY was simple…

She simply took action…

TELL THE STORY:

She said… ENOUGH IS ENOUGH… if he has the power of healing… I must find the energy… get out of my lonely bed… MAKE my way through the crowd and just touch him…

She was so worn out, I don’t know how she found the strength to push through the crowd. But she did. Her strategy was to sneak up from behind Jesus and touch him.

I noticed something about her approach to Jesus. It seems that the emotional trauma of being an outcast for the last 12 years had profoundly affected her. While the Bible doesn’t explicitly say this, it seems that being an outcast became her identity.

Is as if we can see the mountain of shame in her approach to Jesus.

She thought she could just touch Jesus and sneak away, thinking he wouldn’t even care to know a person like her.

***There might be someone in the room like that today…

But we see… that this could not be further from the truth.

as soon as she touches the hem of his robe… the bible says… IMMEDIATELY the FLOW of BLOOD DRIED UP! She knew she had been healed… and she is ready to make a quick get away.

JESUS as in the kindest way…. WHO TOUCHED ME?

This woman immediately knows he is asking about her… and this stoped her in her tracks…

No one had ever STOPED to notice or even care to know her the way Jesus did… and she falls down before him and tells him the WHO TRUTH… who she was… what she had done

I can imagine her beginning to recite her story … by saying… Jesus.. I WAS ON EMPTY -I had no hope… I spent my last penny trying to get better…. and I just got more sick… I have been unable to WORSHIP God with my sacrifices… and I barley made it to you today…. I know… the law say’s I’m NOT supposed to TOUCH you… but I heard you we’re a healer… and I was just so desperate… I was HOPING that what I have heard about you was TRUE.

In my mind I can imagine him saying to her… I asked you WHO TOUCHED me because… I DON’T want you to just slip away back into into the crowd…

I wanted you to know…. I NOTICED… WHEN I HEALED YOU…

Can you imagine how that felt for her?

Perhaps for the 1st time in 12 years… someone said… I SEE YOU… and I’m not ashamed to let everyone know WHO TOUCHED ME.

LOOK EVERYONE THIS UNCLEAN WOMAN TOUCHED ME…

Everyone else had been afraid of her sickness… Jesus said… go ahead bring it to me.

Friends, here is what I know… IN YOUR NOTES

To get where you want to GO, you can’t STAY where you are.

If your on empty in any place in your life… You can not afford to stay where you are…

She did not let her hopeless situation keep her in bed.

Some of you want a physcal… or emotional healing… but you are content to stay where you are at.

I encourage you… KEEP THE FATH… and just continue to show up… he might heal you (I don’t promise HEALING… because I don’t understand all of his ways…) but I can promise he will comfort you in your distress, in your loneliness, in your anxiety.

APPLICATION

Who might this woman represent today?

Every Person who does not know Jesus as their Savior

and…

Every believer who is loaded down with a heavy burden. It might be Physically, emotional or financial.

Some of you wanted to stay home today but you didn’t… you thought you could sneak in and out of church today and he says…

WHO TOUCHED ME…

I see you… I notice you… I care about you.

Jesus says in Matt. 11:28

Matthew 11:28 (ESV)

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Friends Jesus gives you the same invitation … It doesn’t matter if your heavy burden is:

It can be sickness, it can be emotional trauma, it can be financial distress…

He invites you to bring it to him… why?… Because just like the woman with the issue of blood he wants to…. make…. you… well.

He told her in v. 34 - He say’s….

Mark 5:34 (ESV)

And he said to her, “Daughter,

DAUGHTER - this is a statement of parental ownership - you are mine… I claim you as my own…

your faith has has done something for you… what has it done? It has…

made you well(sózó) Well.. this is the greek word… Sózó = meaning … to save, heal, rescue

This is the his indicates she was SAVED and was sent in away with a life of peace.

and as a bonus… he said.. be HEALED and be healed of your disease.”

What does it mean to have faith?

This greek word for Faith means… divine persuasion upon the heart.

In other words Jesus is saying… What God has persuaded you of… has made you well…

She didn’t do nothing with her faith… she participated and took action in this Faith by stepping out…

… IN YOUR NOTES…

Friends… some of you think faith is some kind of mysterious thing that only spiritual people have… when in reality… I believe faith is more practical that many of us think.

Faith is like this…

Illustration: … Imagine a chair sitting in the middle of a room. You see the chair and have observe over time that it appears sturdy and well-built. You have knowledge about chairs and understand that they are designed to hold people. However, true faith is not just believing that the chair can hold you up; it is actually sitting down in the chair and trusting it to support your weight.

Faith in God works the same….

Faith is taking action on what you have heard about God.

Here is another way to say this… IN YOUR NOTES

Faith is coming into AGREEMENT with what has been ANNOUNCED about Jesus.

It’s not just about believing that God exists or that He is capable of taking care of you.

It involves standing up in FAITH… getting up out of the situation you are in… in your weakness… in your frailty… sickness rejection… and pressing through the crowd… to touching the hem of his garment.

His words say’s he will make you WELL…

Today Jesus puts his authority on display once again as we see Jesus’s… tell us he has

Kingdom Authority over SICKNESS.

Friends… HIS POWER is the HIGHLIGHT of this Story… of the Woman with the Issue of Blood…

We are tempted to make this woman’s FAITH the highlight of the story… but Mark is making the Healing Power of Jesus the main attraction.

SLOW…….

Let’s be careful not over-estimate our faith and underestimate his power… (REPEAT)

when we do we make it ALL about us… when its about HIS GLORY in US…

He told this woman… GO IN PEACE

and as she walked peacefully through the streets…. The Healing Power of God was on full display for all to see… for us to see… her life… pointed straight to the Glory and Power of God.

God want’s his Glory to shine through you.

The title of our message today is

YOU ARE NOT WITHOUT HOPE

FRIENDS…. as long as Jesus has Kingdom Authority of SICKNESS and DEATH - there is HOPE for Healing in your life.

Today I want to invite you to take a step of faith just like this woman…

Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…

Question: Will you willing push through the crowed to meet Jesus today?

As I close today…. we see…. this woman pictures

Every person who does not know Jesus as Savior

and

Every believer who is loaded down with a heavy burden

I believe God wants to heal some people in the room today…

So today… if you do NOT know Jesus as your Lord and Savior today is your day… he want to heal your spiritual condition.

Salvation Altar Call

I believe Jesus is here today… and I believe he wants to save you.

The same way it took the power of God and the faith of that woman to believe in Jesus… is the same way your receive salvation.

Believing in Jesus is about beleiving everything that Jesus reveals to us…

It’s about believing

What he say’s about Sin and the eternal punishment.

It’s about believing

That … His death on the cross paid the penalty of our sin….

Because of this we can be made right in the sight of God.

According to Eph 2:8 – there are 2 things required for Salvation

For it is by Grace that we are saved through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—

1st is this... Gods Grace

What is his Grace: It’s when God gives you something you do not deserve because of his incredible love for you– What does he give us... He gives us His forgiveness and His life

2nd is this... Faith.

He invites us to PUT our FAITH in him... for our salvation

1. If you have never asked Jesus to save you and made a public profession of faith… today is your day…

a. All across the room....

b. If you would like Jesus to save you today… RIASE YOUR HAND ALL AROUND THE ROOM….

I want to invite you to Repeat a prayer after me

· There is nothing magical in this prayer.. it simply is a way of declaring to Jesus what has taken place in your heart.

Here is how I would like to end the service for everyone else….

As this woman pictures… every believer who is loaded down with a heavy burden… Jesus is here today if you want to touch the hem of his garment.

Question: Will you willing push through the crowed to meet Jesus today?

I want to close with something very practical… What does scripture invite us to do when we are sick?

Of course Jesus is NOT here to physically touch him today… but he is here and in James he does ask us…

James 5:14 NIV

Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.

Today we want to pray for you and those of you who would like to be anointed with oil we will do so…

By the way… OIL is simply a symbol of the Holy Spirits healing power. In it self… it has no spiritual healing powers… I just want to demystify being anointed with oil for some of you.

Sickness is not just about Physcal ailments… its also about emotional distress… or mental illness. … its about unlearning all of the unhealthy emotional habits and self soothing tools we have picked up along life.

I don’t care how much or how little you are suffering today… God cares about you and wants to display his power over sickness in your body and in your mind.

We’re going to end the service with A question as we do nearly every week.

ALL ACROSS THE ROOM – HAS THE HOLY SPIRIT spoken to you in anyway today?

HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE THE KINGDOM OF GOD TO FREELY BREAK THROUGH IN YOUR LIFE?

· Bringing Healing to your sick body… your sick mind…?

****I just want to comment for a moment that even science confirms that living an unhealthy life / a sinful life it manifest itself in the body and can make you sick. I also want to point out that NOT ALL Sickness is related directly to your sin. Friends, we live in a fallen world… and we simply get sick… this fallenness effects birth rates, diease… and many other things.

-I want to remind you that ALL OF THE CURSE of the law regarding sin and death was pour on Jesus… the father has NO NEED TO CURSE you with sickness… by default of this fallen world you will

What might the Holy Spirit be saying to you in light of this teaching? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Tongues & Interpretation

1. To STRENGTHEN the Church (1 Cor14:5)

For prophecy is greater than SPEAKING in TONGUES, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be STRENGTHENED.

Believers, God has operated through this gift today to strengthen you today. Let your faith be strengthened and know that God is in control and using supernatural measures to speak to us.

2. Is a SIGN for unbelievers. (1Cor. 14: 21a, 22)

“I will speak to my own people

through strange languages....

22 -  So you see that speaking in tongues is a SIGN, not for believers, but for UNBELIEVERS.

The Bible explains to us God has chosen to use this gift to be a sign for you. A sign for what? It is a sign of his realness for those of you who have been doubting or questioning the existence of God. He wants you to know he is REAL and he wants to bring you spiritual life and health. If you're in here today and you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior... he wants you to know he has gone to great lengths to show you his love today. (Great opportunity for a salvation altar call if it fits).
