Review

Turn to 1 Corinthians 12:1.
Two weeks ago we concluded our study on the fruit of the spirit. We learned that the fruit of the Spirit is Christ’s life lived out through you and me. It is Christ in us the hope of glory being lived out through us by the power of the Holy Spirit. This happens as we submit to the control of the Spirit of God by faith.

Message

Today we’re going to pivot to the subject of spiritual gifts. We could spend a lot of time here, but I want to avoid getting bogged down and spending weeks on this subject. Frankly, I got a bit bogged down in my own study on this and had to backtrack a bit because I don’t want that to happen here.
The topic of spiritual gifts is similar to the topic of the baptism of the Holy Spirit in this way: you can spend more time dispelling all the confusion that is out there as you can actually studying what the Bible says about the topic in context. I really don’t want to do that. So as we get into this subject, just know up front that this is not an exhaustive study. If you have a question that is relevant to our study, feel free to ask as we go or fill out a question card.
Concerning spiritual gifts, perhaps you have had one or more of the following questions in your own mind:
What is a spiritual gift?
How do you get a spiritual gift?
Is there a relationship between spiritual gifts and spirituality?
If so, are spiritual gifts just for certain elite Christians?
What is your spiritual gift?
Do I have to take a personality test or spiritual gift quiz to know my spiritual gift?
What happens if I don’t know my spiritual gift?
Those are all valid questions. To answer these, I want to establish a clear mark of distinction:
“The gifted musician, artist, public speaker, ball player, cook, singer, woodworker, etc. is often thought of as someone with a spiritual gift.” - Pastor Frank Camp

“Spiritual gifts are not just [natural] skills and abilities, but are God-given abilities that will edify the church…the fact of the divine origin of spiritual gifts is abundantly CLEAR.” - Pastor Frank Camp
In a few moments we’ll try to establish a definition for the term “spiritual gift”, but first, let’s prove that the above statement is true. Specifically, I want to show you that spiritual gifts are distinct from natural abilities because spiritual gifts have a divine origin. A natural ability is something that is a part of who you are and that can be developed over time, whereas a spiritual gift is a grace bestowed by God.

Hebrews 2:3–4 KJV 1900
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
Who bestowed these spiritual gifts on the apostles of Christ? The Holy Ghost , of his own will. In other words, the choice and the bestowing was His. The apostles didn’t get to pick their gifts.

Romans 12:6 KJV 1900
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
What makes me have one gift and you have another gift? What makes our gifts vary from each another? The grace [of God] that is given to us

1 Corinthians 12:8–9 KJV 1900
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
By whom did Paul say that these gifts are given? By the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:28 KJV 1900
And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
Who has set some in the church? God

Ephesians 4:11 KJV 1900
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
“He” in context is referring back to Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 4:10 KJV 1900
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
When a Christian receives a spiritual gift, how should he or she use it? As a good steward of the manifold grace of God.
These verses indicate that one distinction of spiritual gifts is that they are imparted by God’s grace.
