In Philippians 4:22 we find, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating passages wherein the possibilities of God’s word on the hearts of mankind are considered.
Philippians 4:22 NKJV
22 All the saints greet you, but especially those who are of Caesar’s household.
Now for our study today I want us to take a moment to discuss how we, as God’s children, can lever the power of God’s word to help even the most unlikely of souls to come to the truth and be added to the church by our Lord Jesus Christ.
Now, for God’s word to be effective on the hearts and minds of those lost in sin it must first be presented to those souls. By that I mean we must “go and teach the lost” of God’s saving message. Notice what Paul wrote in Philippians 1:13-14.
Philippians 1:13 NKJV
13 so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ;
Let’s stop there for a moment, and notice that “the whole palace guard, and all the rest” were very aware of Paul’s teachings on Christ, and that he was in prison for telling the world about Christ. This is how people find out about our Lord and Savior and it isn’t by them making the time to study the bible more often then not it is because their friends, family, or person they meet talks to them and studies with them. This is why Paul points out in Romans 10:14
Romans 10:14 NKJV
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
God has designed his word to “be taught” to the lost not to be understood by the lost on their own. Not only does this help the lost to understand the truth but it motivates the faithful to go out and boldly proclaim the truth as well. Notice now, Philippians 1:14
Philippians 1:14 NKJV
14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
So you see, God designed his word to be taught to others (2 Timothy 2:2) and when this happens both the lost and the saved are motivated by it to be taught all the more.
The second then we must understand when it comes to teaching the lost about Christ, through God’s word, and how he can impact their lives, is that we must actually teach God’s word. I know that sounds silly to say but it is our job as God’s children to teach the word and get out of the way.
Hebrews 4:12 NKJV
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Notice it is not Landon’s silver tongue or whoever’s name you want to place here who will have any righteous impact on someone obeying the gospel. In fact, if the person we are studying with is obeying because of our faith and not their faith they are not obeying the gospel of Christ but the gospel of the one teaching them.
Galatians 1:8 NKJV
8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
So to recap, God’s word has the power to impact even the most “as we see it” unlikely souls but that will only happen if we seek to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone and get out of the way and let the word of God do all the saving work.
