Blessings of the King - (Matthew 5:1-12) Blessings for those with right attitudes toward God #1 …the poor in spirit theirs is … Blessings for those with right actions toward people #5 …the merciful they shall … #2 …those who mourn they shall … #6 …the pure they shall … #3 …the meek #7 …the peacemakers they shall … they shall … …those who #4 hunger and thirst they shall … for righteousness …those who are #8 persecuted for theirs is … righteousness’ sake 2. Expectations of the King - (Matthew 5:13-48) “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20 ESV) 2. Expectations of the King - (Matthew 5:13-48) You have heard / understood … But I say to you … 5:21-26 the act of murder heart of anger the act of adultery 5:27-32 (& divorce) heart of lust 5:33-37 swearing oaths heart of deceit 5:38-42 retribution heart of vengeance love your neighbour; 5:43-48 heart of hate hate your enemy 2. Expectations of the King - (Matthew 5:13-48) “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17 ESV) Jesus fulfilled the demands of the law - by his obedience “…so by the one man’s [Christ’s] obedience the many will be made righteous.” (Romans 5:19 ESV) ➡ This is justification, received by faith Jesus fulfilled the demands of the law - by his obedience “…so by the one man’s [Christ’s] obedience the many will be made righteous.” (Romans 5:19 ESV) ➡ This is justification, received by faith Jesus’ followers fulfill the requirement of the law - by the Spirit “… that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:4 ESV) ➡ This is sanctification, received by faith 2.
