This Week’s Theme: Serve Together with Excellence
Word for the Week is Excellence: It is the act of producing work for God that is very or eminently good.
Memory verse: Romans 14:12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.
Sermon Passage: 1 Samuel 18:5-16
14 And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.
INTRODUCTION: Cameras are everywhere! They are in the stores, on the job, on the street corners, in parking lots, and at community parks. WE are being watched.
16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
TRANSITION: JESUS SENT OUT HIS DISCIPLES IN CHAPTER 10 OF MATTHEW TELLING THEM
16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
IN THIS WORLD SAINTS WILL ENCOUNTER
WOLVES, THOSE WHO ARE NOT FOR YOUR BENEFIT
WOLVES, THOSE WHO WILL DEVOUR YOU. YET SAINTS ARE CALLED TO
DO WHAT IS RIGHT
WE ARE CALLED TO BE WISE AS SERPENTS AND HARMLESS AS DOVES.
BELIEVERS ARE CALLED TO OBEY
IN THE PASSAGE BEFORE US TODAY, GOD WANTS US TO KNOW HE EXPECTS US TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT THROUGH THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF LIFE.
GOD EXPECTS HIS SERVANTS TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT.
EVEN . . .
I. WHEN PEOPLE ARE FOND OF YOU
I. WHEN PEOPLE ARE FOND OF YOU
YOU MUST DO WHAT IS RIGHT! LOOK AT THE LAST PHRASE IN VERSE 5
5 So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely. And Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
6 Now it had happened as they were coming home, when David was returning from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women had come out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy, and with musical instruments.
7 So the women sang as they danced, and said: “Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.”
LOOK AT VERSE 6, AFTER THE DEFEAT OF GOLIATH AND THE PHILISTINE ARMY. THE ARMY RETURNED HOME.
THEY WROTE AND SUNG A SONG ABOUT YOU.
THEY ASCRIBED GREATER HONOR TO DAVID THAN THE KING.
WHAT WAS HIS RESPONSE?
DAVID SERVED KING SAUL
HE DID NOT TRY TO OUT SHINE THE KING
ALTHOUGH HE KNEW THE LORD HAD ANOINTED HIM TO BE THE NEXT KING.
INSTEAD DAVID FOLLOWED PROVERBS 17 VERSE 27.
27 He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.
GOD EXPECTS HIS SERVANTS TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT
WILL YOU DO WHAT IS RIGHT WHEN THINGS ARE GOING WELL
DO WHAT IS RIGHT!
BECAUSE DOING RIGHT IS NOT BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE FOND OF US
DO RIGHT BECAUSE GOD IS FOND OF YOU
DO WHAT IS RIGHT WHEN PEOPLE ARE FOND OF YOU AND WHEN PEOPLE . . .
II. WHEN PEOPLE ARE FURIOUS BECAUSE OF YOU
II. WHEN PEOPLE ARE FURIOUS BECAUSE OF YOU
8 Then Saul was very angry, and the saying displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom?”
9 So Saul eyed David from that day forward.
And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played music with his hand, as at other times; but there was a spear in Saul’s hand. And Saul cast the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” But David escaped his presence twice.
SAUL REPAID DAVID’S LOYALTY WITH ANGER
LISTEN TO DAVID’S TESTIMONY IN
12 They reward me evil for good, To the sorrow of my soul.
THEIR ACTIONS BROUGHT SORROW TO HIS SOUL
HE SAID IN PSALM 38 VERSE 20
20 Those also who render evil for good, They are my adversaries, because I follow what is good.
HE CALLED THEM HIS ADVERSARIES OR ENEMIES BECAUSE HE FOLLOWED WHAT IS GOOD.
HE SAID IN PSALM 109 VERSE 5
5 Thus they have rewarded me evil for good, And hatred for my love.
THEY RETURNED Hatred for HIS Love.
LISTEN TO DAVID’S COUNSEL IN PSALM 37 VERSES 7-8
REST IN THE LORD
REST IN THE LORD
7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
REST (BE QUIET, BE STILL) IN THE LORD WITH A FOCUS ON NOT DOING ANYTHING IN THE SITUATION, ALLOW HIM TO FIGHT YOUR BATTLES.
WAIT WITH PATIENCE ON HIM, TRUST IN HIM.
DO NOT GET BURNING ANGRY OR UPSET BECAUSE OF THEIR WICKED PROSPERITY AND THE ONE WHO BRINGS WICKED SCHEMES TO PAST.
THEN HE SAID IN VERSE 8 TO FORSAKE ANGER AND WRATH
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.
DAVID RESPONDED WISELY
WILL YOU WHEN PEOPLE GIVE YOU
ANGER FOR YOUR ALLIGIANCE
WILL YOU RESPOND WISELY WHEN PEOPLE ARE
FURIOUS FOR YOUR FAITHFULNESS
WILL YOU RESPOND WISELY WHEN PEOPLE ARE
MAD BECAUSE OF YOUR GOD EXPECTS HIS SERVANTS TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT
WHEN PEOPLE ARE FOND OF US
WHEN PEOPLE ARE FURIOUS WITH US
AND WHEN PEOPLE . . .
III. WHEN PEOPLE FEAR YOU
III. WHEN PEOPLE FEAR YOU
12 Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul.
15 Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him.
SAUL FEARED DAVID
HE DID NOT REALIZE THE BIBLE STATES IN PROVERBS 29 VERSE 25 THAT
25 The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.
12 Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul.
THESE VERSES PROVIDE TWO REASONS SAUL WAS AFRAID OF DAVID.
BECAUSE THE LORD WAS WITH HIM
JUST LIKE THE LORD WAS WITH JOSEPH AND MADE WHAT HE DID TO PROSPER IN Genesis 39
JUST LIKE GOD WAS WITH THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL IN Numbers 23:21
JUST LIKE THE LORD WAS WITH GIDEON AND MADE HIM VICTORIOUS IN BATTLE Judges 6:16
JUST LIKE THE LORD WAS WITH SAMUEL IN 1 Samuel 3:19
SAUL KNEW THAT THE LORD WAS ON DAVID’S SIDE AND HE WAS AFRAID ROM8.31
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
2ND BECAUSE DAVID BEHAVED VERY WISELY
Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him.
DAVID BEHAVIOR WAS BECAUSE OF HIS FEAR
DAVID KNEW THAT
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.
THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS WHAT WE ARE STRIVING FOR
SAINTS LIVE LIFE OUT OF RESPECT FOR GOD
NOT THE FEAR OF MAN
SAINTS LIVE LIFE OUT OF ADMIRATION FOR GOD
NOT BY BEING AFRAID OF MAN.
EVEN WHEN MEN FEAR US, WE RESPOND BIBLICALLY
WE GIVE HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE
GOD EXPECTS HIS SERVANTS TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT
WHEN PEOPLE ARE FOND OF US
WHEN PEOPLE ARE FURIOUS WITH US
WHEN PEOPLE FEAR US
AND WHEN PEOPLE . . .
IV. WHEN PEOPLE FAVOR YOU
IV. WHEN PEOPLE FAVOR YOU
5 So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely. And Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
13 Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
DAVID WAS PUT OVER A THOUSAND SOLDIERS. SAUL SENT HIM OUT TO THE OTHER REALM OF THE KINGDOM
SAUL ELEVATED HIM TO ELIMINATE HIM
NOTICE THAT EVERYTHING THAT SHINES IS NOT GOLD AND
EVERY ELEVATION IS NOT ALWAYS MEANT FOR YOUR BENEFIT.
REGARDLESS OF THE MOTIVES OF OTHERS GOD IS CALLING FOR HIS PEOPLE TO BEHAVE WISELY
DAVID BEHAVED WISELY. HE DID NOT TRY TO TAKE OVER THE KINGDOM.
HE DID NOT TRY TO USE HIS POSITION TO UNDERMINE THE KINGDOM.
DAVID BEHAVED WISELY
IT IS NOT THE FAVOR OF MEN THAT WE ARE STRIVING FOR BUT THE FAVOR OF GOD
34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the Lord;
HE LISTENED TO WISDOM
NOT LEAVING THE GATES OR POSTS UNTIL YOU HAVE HEARD FROM WISDOM.
For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the LORD;
DO WHAT IS RIGHT!
Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
DO WHAT IS RIGHT!
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
DO WHAT IS RIGHT!
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
DO WHAT IS RIGHT!
Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God,
SAINTS HELP WE DON’T HINDER
WE ASSIST AND NOT ATTACK
WE BLESS AND NOT BURDEN
WE COMFORT AND NOT CURSE
WE PRAISE AND NOT PUT DOWN
WE GLORY IN TRIBULATIONS
KNOWING THAT TRIBULATION PRODUCES PERSEVERANCE

HOPE
WE BLESS AND NOT CURSE
WE LOVE AND NOT HATE
WE REJOICE WITH THOSE WHO REJOICE
WE WEEP WITH THOSE WHO WEEP
GOD EXPECTS HIS SERVANTS TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT
WHEN PEOPLE ARE FOND OF US
WHEN PEOPLE ARE FURIOUS WITH US
WHEN PEOPLE FEAR US
AND WHEN PEOPLE FAVOR US!
