Wow, what a journey!
Wow, what a journey!
Just in Chapter 8 we have seen many things already:
Ministering woman
Parable of the sower
Parable of lamp
Where is your faith? Jesus calms the sea
The healing of the demoniac
(Transition) So today we get to look at faith building miracles, one in private, one in public, both for the glory of God.
Our faith building passage
Our faith building passage
40 “I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.” 41 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 While he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples,
44 “Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.
46 An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side,
48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.” 49 John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.”
50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.” 51 When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem;
52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.
54 When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of;
56 for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” And they went on to another village.
What in this passage sticks out to you? What verse(s), and why?
Jesus returns back and who is there to meet Him (vv.40-41)?
The people
Jairus an official from the synagogue.
After hearing the plight of Jairus daughter Jesus encounters someone else, who and what was the issue (v.43)?
An unnamed woman, with hemorrhage for 12-years
What did the woman do, what was the result of her action (vv.44-45)?
Her hemorrhage stopped.
Jesus questioned who touched her
Peter responded there is crowd pressing in on You.
Jesus knew he was touched (v.46), what did the woman know and do (v.47)?
She did not escape notice
She cam trembling and fell down before Him
She declared, proclaimed what she did and why she did it before all the people.
How does Jesus identify the woman and that does he tell her (v.48)?
Daughter! He called her daughter
Your faith has may you well, go in peace.
After Jairus hears report on his daughter (v.49) Jesus relies saying what (v.50)?
Do not be afraid
Only believe
What did Jesus tell the people in the house to do (vv.51-52)
Would not allow people to enter
Told the people to stop weeping.
What did the people do in response to the statement from Jesus that she “is asleep” (v.53)?
They laughed at Him believing she had died.
Jesus commanded the girl, and what happened (v.55)?
Her spirit returned, she got up
What was the results on the parents when the girl arose (v.56)?
They were amazed.
(Transition) - I think you can see there was faith that had to be acted on in both the stories before us this morning.
A Fathers plea
A Fathers plea
40 When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed Him, for they were all expecting Him. 41 Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus’ feet and pleaded with Him to come to his house,
42 because he had an only daughter about 12 years old, and she was at death’s door. While He was going, the crowds were nearly crushing Him.
Jairus a prominent leader of religious people, both physically and spiritually is a father first.
What would you be willing to do to save your child or your grandchild?
Twelve years He had joy in his daughter. Now he was willing to set aside his pride, his everything for the sake of his daughter “if” Jesus would heal her.
Morrison in his brief comments said this:
“Everybody in Capernaum knew Jairus; but no one knew that he believed in Christ until his little daughter was at the point of death. Then he confessed it.”
The passage shows that Jairus faith was different from the faith of the Centurion. Jairus had faith to seek Jesus out, to plead with Jesus and to go with Jesus to his daughter, amidst the throng of people crowding Jesus.
(Transition) - there is an interruption in the story, so we need to see why did God place this next part there. Are the two related to be together to make God’s point? Hold on, let’s see.
A woman’s faith in action
A woman’s faith in action
43 A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years, who had spent all she had on doctors yet could not be healed by any, 44 approached from behind and touched the tassel of His robe. Instantly her bleeding stopped.
What facts can you pull from these verses?
I think you would agree this woman is desperate
She tried everything she could under her power to no avail to stop the hemorrhage.
Somethings to consider
To the Jewish community anyone with blood issue, they would be considered unclean.
Anything they touched would be considered unclean.
If anyone touched them, they would be considered unclean and unable to participate in any religious ceremonies (read up in Leviticus 15:19-31)
Can you imagine 12-years of this? Of course she is desperate and she is broke.
Another thing to consider is that the Rabbi’s at that time taught that her hemorrhaging was the result of immorality. She would have been excommunicated from the synagogue, divorced from her husband, ostracized by the community. (Courson).
Can you see the contract of the two stories, 12-years of joy and delight with daughter when it came to Jairus, and 12-years of isolation, humiliation, for the unnamed woman with blood issue. Can you see the link between them?
We have to know that difficulties, tragedies will strike at some time, we are not immune to it because we are a Christian. But God is with us through anything, everything we face consider (1Cor10:13)
Are you prepared if difficulties, tragedies come? If things are good now, it is good now to prepare for when those times comes.
I found this interesting in that the woman spent all her money on the doctors, we can do that same thing.
Doctor, medical to heal our ailments, We spend time, money and are not healed by them.
When depressed, anxious, worried in our very soul, Doctor Entertainment, but we find no cure.
Doctor success, trusting in our work, our efforts, and in the end, we cannot take it with us.
Doctor self help, we try to fix ourselves by reading some formula, but cannot fix ourselves.
Doctor religion, that cannot heal us either, only Doctor Jesus can!
We need to be like this woman was, we need to seek Jesus, reach out to Him, have faith in Him that He can bring healing, soul healing, and body healing, now or in the future as we will all be made new when we join Him for eternity when our mortality is replaced by immortality.
How can we meet Jesus, go where we know Jesus is.
He promises to be in the midst of His people (Heb2:12)
He promises to be heard in the Word (Heb10:7)
He promises to be responsive to prayer (Jer33:3)
A response to faith
A response to faith
45 “Who touched Me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds are hemming You in and pressing against You.” 46 “Someone did touch Me,” said Jesus. “I know that power has gone out from Me.”
47 When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched Him and how she was instantly cured. 48 “Daughter,” He said to her, “your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”
The disciples were impressed by the crowd surrounding, pressing in on Him, Jesus was impressed by the one who reached out and touched Him.
Jesus addressed her as daughter, and did you know this is the only place that Jesus does this, call a woman daughter? It is
It cannot be by the number of people who follow, but by the ones who are touched by the Lord or touch the Lord in obedience. It’s not the numbers, its the person.
What Jesus did privately (healed her); now He calls for her to proclaim it publically!
Why publically? Good question
He wanted Jairus to hear, and see her faith and have faith.
He wanted others to hear and have faith.
Jesus called her out not to embarrass her but to bless her and send her away healed and in peace.
Jesus called her out to tell her she was healed and not doubt the healing and to go in peace!
Jesus told her where the healing came from “her faith.”
She did make the public proclamation that she touched Him and found healing.
Has Jesus healed you, restored you, reconciled you? Be ready to proclaim
Going back just a little about the touch. There is bushing up against Jesus, and touching Jesus. A casual touch or a deliberate touch
You can go to church, come to the assembly every week and brush up to Jesus but not reach out to touch Jesus and have Jesus touch You, change You.
“It is not every contact with Christ that saves men; it is the arousing of yourself to come near to Him, the determinate, the personal, resolute, believing tough of Jesus Christ which saves.” (Spurgeon)
(Transition) - we have a woman of faith who sought out Jesus to touch Jesus, now let’s move back to the story of Jairus and his daughter.
Just believe . . .
Just believe . . .
49 While He was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader’s house, saying, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the Teacher anymore.” 50 When Jesus heard it, He answered him, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe, and she will be made well.”
Jairus gets the report, must have been heartbroken, questioning things.
Jesus quickly responds to the report and tells Jairus two things. what two things do you see?
Do not be afraid
Only believe
Love what I read too in another commentary, Bible expositors commentary
“Don’t try to believe and be afraid at the same time. Don’t try to believe and figure it all out. Don’t try to believe and make sense of the delay. Instead, only believe.”
Jairus don’t be afraid, believe in My word! That’s it. Believe what Jesus said.
When all the evidence pointed to hopelessness, hope say just believe!
Jesus speaks life
Jesus speaks life
51 After He came to the house, He let no one enter with Him except Peter, John, James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Everyone was crying and mourning for her. But He said, “Stop crying, for she is not dead but asleep.”
53 They started laughing at Him, because they knew she was dead. 54 So He took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!”
55 Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then He gave orders that she be given something to eat. 56 Her parents were astounded, but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
“Faith is the currency of eternity.” (Courson)
It was faith that brought laughter, ridicule
This faith was not the faith of the centurion that was bold and forthtelling. This was faith that just needed to believe. Faith is the currency of eternity, like many different coins, bills, types of currency, Faith is the one that gets you into eternity in heaven. It takes the faith of a mustard seed.
Jairus was called to walk in faith and return to his house with Jesus, and his faith was rewarded.
We need to have faith knowing God will act on faith, sometimes we may not understand what it is He is doing, but it will work for the good according to scripture.
Remember earlier I asked if there was a purpose these two stories of faith are linked together. Here is a few final thoughts and we will close. This a summary of what Wiersbe had to say.
Jairus was an important man, the woman was poor who spent all her money on doctors
Jairus came publically, the woman came privately
Jairus thought Jesus had to do a lot to heal his daughter. The woman thought all she needed to do was touch His garment.
Jesus responded to the woman immediately, Jesus responded to Jairus after a delay
Jairus daughter was healed secretly. The woman was healed publically.
Faith, both had faith, and Jesus responded to both of their faiths.
