Moses came down off the mountain of God to meet a sinful people.
John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Moses brought with him the double sided ten commandments.
Exodus 32:15 And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the Testimony were in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written.
2 times in the bible there are double sided documents the ten commandments in Exodus 32 and the scroll in the book of revelation. These two documents are unique and important they both condemn!
They both demand a Savior who redeems! The law and the scroll declare guilty. Jesus REDEEMS!
The double sided scroll, condemns the world and begs for a Redeemer.
Revelation 5:1–2 And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?”
The documents condemn, Jesus redeems.
Revelation 5:8–9 Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,”
What is that wicked noise?
Exodus 32:16–18 Now the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets. And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.” But he said: “It is not the noise of the shout of victory, Nor the noise of the cry of defeat, But the sound of singing I hear.”
Not the noise of war, not the noise of defeat, not the noise of victory but the noise of debauchery. Do you know what wickedness sounds like, what it smells like, what is looks like?
The Ten Commandments are broken.
Exodus 32:19 So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain.
Wash your mouth out with gold.
Exodus 32:20 Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it.
Eve 2.0
Exodus 32:21–23 And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them?” So Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord become hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. For they said to me, ‘Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.
Aaron did not take responsibility for his sin, but blamed the people. He did exaclty what Adam did to Eve and what Eve did to the serpant. He did what Saul did to the people when told to kill the Amalekites, what Peter did to John when confronted by his sin. What we do when God confronts us with sin. LOOK AT THAT GUY!
Stop it don’t look at anybody else look to yourself.
Worst Excuse Ever!
Exodus 32:24 And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out.”
The worst thing that you can do is blame the devil for your sin. Excuse it as an accident or say well it just happened. We know that Aaron fashioned the calf the Bible tells us as much, this excuse was paper thin the only way that calf popped out is if the devil himself did it. That did n’t happen. Don’t blame the devil for your sins.
Stop it don’t look at anybody else look to yourself.
Like in Eden, your sins leave you naked and vulnerable.
Exodus 32:25 Now when Moses saw that the people were unrestrained (for Aaron had not restrained them, to their shame among their enemies),
Embarrassment at its worst. SIN! vulnerable at its worst sin. No one wants to be caught. You can’t play tough., This is the worst dream ever trapped in front of the class giving a speech in your underwear sin is worse. Before anyone with all your evil bare for everyone to see.
Who is on the LORD’S side?
Exodus 32:26 then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on the Lord’s side—come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.
You want to know the answer to nakedness and failed excuses to real sin. It is to choose Christ. To choose his team. From what I can tell the Levites were just as guilty and complicit in the crime the difference is that they chose the LORD’s side.
Put your sword in your hand!
Exodus 32:27 And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’ ”
The word of God is your weapon of choice.
Ephesians 6:17 “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;”
Choosing the LORD’S side is above everything else.
Luke 14:25–27 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
I believe the goal is to convince them to join the LORD’S side. PRay for them, witness, but remember Christ comes first.
3000 men fell that day.
Exodus 32:28 So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day.
God is serious about sin. 3000 die, 3000 died at the world trade center. 3000 die at the Philistine temple 3000, BUT 3000 are saved on the day of Pentecost. All these events God is serious about sin. The answer the gospel.
The answer to save your family is consecration.
Exodus 32:29 Then Moses said, “Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, that He may bestow on you a blessing this day, for every man has opposed his son and his brother.”
Point your family to the truth.
John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
The people all deserved death. Some found it.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The answer to sin is atonement.
Exodus 32:30 Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.”
Atonement - “To Cover” “To take away” (AT-ONE-MENT) a broken relationship restored.
It is important to understand that in the definition a transaction has taken place.
Jesus died on the Christ to cover our sins with his blood. He took our sins on Himself covered them with His blood reconciled us to the father. Restoring the broken relationship.
It is important to know that this is a Jewish Old Testament word.
If you have sinned you need to confess it.
Exodus 32:31 Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold!
We all know 1 John 1.9
Confession is followed by forgiveness.
Exodus 32:32 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.”
Beware being blotted out of the book.
Exodus 32:33 And the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.
This does not mean that you can lose your salvation.
Psalm 69:28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous.
You need to have your name permanently recorded in heaven’s book.
Luke 10:20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Your name needs to be sealed by the Spirit.
Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
When the books are opened make sure your name is not missing.
Revelation 20:11–15 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
Daniel 7 Malachi 3 many places in Paul’s writing having your name in the books of heaven is very important don’t have your name missing on judgment day.
Your name needs to be penned in the blood of the Lamb.
Revelation 13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Revelation 21:27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
The blood of Jesus is the real permanent marker.
There is two names for this book, the book of life, original name, lambs book of life, the redeemed name of the book. At the begininning it contained everyone’s name written in heavenly pencil lead. God has the eraser. Golden calves have you blotted out. But you can chose to be on the LORD’S SIDE. Then your name is sealed in blood. I want to say written in stone but that’s not right. Written in stone is the ten commandments and Moses smashed those no. I would rather have my name sealed in blood by the SPIRIT. The Bible warns you,. don’t reject the call of the SPIRIT! You need to know that your name is a perminant fixture in the book. SEALED By the BLOOD!!!!
