Romans 10 - Hearing, Showing, and Repeating

Romans 10 CSB
Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation. I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. Since they are ignorant of the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes, since Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them. But the righteousness that comes from faith speaks like this: Do not say in your heart, “Who will go up to heaven?” that is, to bring Christ down or, “Who will go down into the abyss?” that is, to bring Christ up from the dead. On the contrary, what does it say? The message is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. This is the message of faith that we proclaim: If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame, since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news. But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message? So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ. But I ask, “Did they not hear?” Yes, they did: Their voice has gone out to the whole earth, and their words to the ends of the world. But I ask, “Did Israel not understand?” First, Moses said, I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that lacks understanding. And Isaiah says boldly, I was found by those who were not looking for me; I revealed myself to those who were not asking for me. But to Israel he says, All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and defiant people.
This is our message- Romans 10:9
Romans 10:9 CSB
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Why? Because believing in the heart gives us righteousness and confessing with the mouth gives us salvation.
Righteousness means we are right with God. We have spoken about this. We are now in good or right standing with God.
Righteousness means right or good standing.
Lets say you get a bill in the mail for your car tags. The bill tells you what is owed and that if you do not pay by a certain day or time you will face some penalty. Once the bill is paid your account is now in right standing and your tags are issued. You can now properly and legally drive your car. You have the right to do this.
We have rightness with God because of Jesus.
1 John 1:9 CSB
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
When we come to Christ God is right to forgive us. We often feel that we don’t deserve it, that we did not earn it, and that we are not worth it. But none of that matters.
The bill has been paid and the Father is right to forgive us because of Christ so now you are right with Him.

What does salvation mean?

When we talk about salvation we have to ask what does salvation mean?
We are not just saved from something but to something. Remember we are not just running from something but to something.
What are we saved from? Sin, death, and the grave. We do not fear punishment or hell. but
“The gospel is less about how to get into the Kingdom of Heaven after you die, and more about how to live in the Kingdom of Heaven before you die.” – Dallas Willard
I have heard people say that some people are too heavenly minded to be of any earthly good. That is true if you are only thinking about what happens after you die. Salvation is not just about what we escaped and where we will spend eternity. It is also about what we do right now. What do we do with what God has given us now?
In Leviticus 9:24 we see that God starts the fire for the alter. Before He did this He told the people what they needed to know about this fire.
Leviticus 6:13 (CSB)
Fire must be kept burning on the altar continually; it must not go out.
God sent the fire for the sacrifices and that fire was meant to light all future fires. We bring what He sent to everything. So do not quench it.
1 Thessalonians 5:19 ESV
Do not quench the Spirit.
We take the fire He placed in us which is His Holy Spirit and we go. God has given us salvation and told us to take everywhere with us.
GRAB BACKPACK
We have a relationship with the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.
We have salvation from sin, death, and the grave but more than that we have God living in us now.
1 Corinthians 6:19 CSB
Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
This is what we are saved to.
Deuteronomy 10:18 CSB
He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the resident alien, giving him food and clothing.
God sends the rain on the just and unjust alike but salvation gives us a defender. We can call on God in times of need. This is amazing. This is why Paul says,
Romans 10:11–13 CSB
For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame, since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
There is nothing better than this. Times can be hard, difficult, demanding, confusing, and they can be joyful, abundant, and clear. In all things we are more than conquers because of Jesus and Him in us.
There are things we can want. Things we desire. We should bring all these things to God. We should come to God with every desire we have and believe in faith that He can provide but at the end of the day nothing will compare with the surpassing joy of knowing Jesus. This is the ultimate. Everything else is penultimate, it is secondary.
When we get this everything changes. We stop seeking God like a genie in a lamp and start seeing Him as a constant good holy Father.
Life becomes less about what He can do for us and more about how He can make us new.
UNPACK BACKPACK

When we get this our life becomes a testimony.

When we get this we cannot help but tell others and not only that but our life becomes a testimony.
Romans 10:18 CSB
But I ask, “Did they not hear?” Yes, they did: Their voice has gone out to the whole earth, and their words to the ends of the world.
Our faith leads to a testimony that speaks and rings out into the world.
1 Thessalonians 1:8 CSB
For the word of the Lord rang out from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place that your faith in God has gone out. Therefore, we don’t need to say anything,
We have to remember that people are watching us to see if we really believe what we say. Will we respond with actions that match our testimony?
When we face trials, temptations, or difficulty people are watching to see if your actions match what you have said. When we do it gives validity to our statements.
A testimony itself does not convert you.2
A. W. Tozer
It does not convert anyone but it does back up our statements.
This is why James says,
James 2:18 CSB
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.
Our testimony and our words have to match. When they do we have a powerful tool to share the Gospel. I want to encourage you, if your words and testimony have not been matching it is never too late to turn it around.
We are always calling people to faith. There are two ways we communicate Christ to others: The words we say and our actions. Both are important and required.

Our actions speak loudly

Our students recently went to a an escape room. The people running the thing told Jake and Bri that they were surprised by how polite and well behaved the students were. Usually a big of kids like that come in and they are not so well behaved.
Our Prep kids recently went to pack snacks for Snack Pak and they were told how polite and respectful they were.
They were communicating the truth of what they believe. Their actions were speaking.

Our actions, or our testimony is not enough. It is only half the battle.

Romans 10:14–15 CSB
How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.
We still have to tell people. It does not mean you have to have the perfect words just share who Jesus is and what He has done. Just preach the Gospel. Preach the Gospel.
Romans 10:14 CSB
How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher?
How can people hear if we do not tell them? How can they experience life change if we never tell them. I get it, it is hard because we get nervous, because of the culture around us, and because of fear. But they question remains how can they hear unless someone tells them?
There are opportunities all around us if we are looking.
Anna now saved. Lady at the bank
It is our job as followers of Christ to be the preachers. We are all called. If you have been waiting for permission to share your faith. I give you permission.
The message can be simple.
We have a piece missing. We have this hole in our being, not just in our hearts but in our very being there is something missing. In sin we try to fill it with everything from sex, drugs, and work, to family and money. Anything we can get our hands on to fill the void. But nothing on earth can fill it because it is a spiritual hole. What is missing is Jesus. He is the missing piece, and when we walk into what God has for us everything changes.
I was speaking with someone a while back and they asked if they were just supposed to believe and then like magic everything would change. Well kind of but it’s not magic but it is supernatural.
Romans 10:9 CSB
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
We are saved from something and to something. Today I ask you, have you confessed with your mouth and believed in your heart? Have you laid it all aside and Jesus I want you as my Lord and Savior?
There is a profound phrase in the Bible. They called upon the name of the Lord. Have you called on His name?
