Mark 2:1-12 (NLT)
When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. 2 Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, 3 four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. 4 They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. 5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.” 6 But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves, 7 “What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!” 8 Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts? 9 Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’? 10 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 11 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” 12 And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
Oberservations:
There was a large gathering to see Jesus. So large that people could not get to Him
There is ethusiasm and excitement in the air because of Jesus. He previously healed many and taught with great authority (1:22)
“He preached the word to them” - We can preach alot of things, but is it God’s word?
The man was paralyzed and he had atlease 4 friends willing to pick him up and carry him to Jesus
Friends that where willing to inconvenience themselves and put themselves through discomfort simply for the man to get touched by Jesus.
His condition must have been desperate because these friends stop at nothing to get him to Jesus
They climbed the roof and destroyed it to get him to Jesus - They had resolve regardless of opposition
Roof is a flat surface made of thick layer of clay, compact, supported with mats of branches and beams
The roof was sturdy enough to walk on. Diggin a hole would have been work and messy
Jesus saw Faith and released forgiveness. The man didnt even ask verbally for forgiveness.
The man was seeking a physical healing, but Jesus first brought a spiritual healing. His deepest need was forgiveness!
The paralyzed man and His friends had faith. Faith enough to be mentioned.
Verse 8 - 10: Jesus point was that healing people and forgiving sins was easy. He was experessing that they are impossible for man but possible for God - which is who He is.
This miracel had a purpose vefrse 10-11 to give evidence of Jesus diety “Son of Man”
Jesus over arching role in this passae is He challenges his culture’s religious establishment - He is counter cultural
The poorer people often had mats for beds - it is possible that they carried this man on his very own bed (matt)
Undeterred determination to get to Jesus counts as Faith
Couner cultural - Jesus was not a priest, no one offered sacrifice, there was no clear indication of repentance - yet he ministered forgiveness (in response to faith)
Most of the people gathered would have thought that Jesus was a prophet. Teachers believed that “prophets” in the Old Testament have sence ceased. However people where happy to entertain new prophetic figures (espcially in light of the miracles He preformed). It could be possible by their desperation for change, considering oppression from the Romans, tax, poverty, etc...
Presummably the crowd is hungry for healing. They wanted healing and Jesus was popular for that. Or they wanted to witness.
Regardless Jesus preached the Word. His main purpose, to our knowledge in that meeting the paralytic man is the only one He healed.
