“Our God”
“Our God”
I. Psalm 115:1–3 “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, But unto thy name give glory, For thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake. Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? But our God is in the heavens: He hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.”
A. O LORD: “The existing One”
Glory:The honor due Him.
Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Ephesians 3:20–21 “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”
a. The Spirit who lives in the believer lends His power to energize the believer toward the will of God.
b. The Holy Spirit empowers a church body to enable it to perform the will of God.
c. God reveals Himself in the church as we live preach, and teach His truths, men will see our good works and in them they will see the revelation of the glory of God.
d. Some that see the evidence of God within the church will give their lives to Jesus and thereby glorify the Father.
2. Mercy: lovingkindness.
Psalm 118:1 “O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: Because his mercy endureth for ever.”
God’s steadfast and loyal love causes his mercy to endure forever.
3. Truth’s sake. Divine Instruction
The Prayer of the Lamb
John 17:17–23 “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.”
The truth is that He is the incarnate Son of God, and he is returning to his Father by the route of a desperately shameful and painful death. He prays that the course on which he is embarked will bring glory to his Father, and that his followers, in consequence of his own death and exaltation, will be preserved from evil and for the priceless privilege of seeing Jesus’ glory, all the while imitating in their own relationship the cooperative exchange of love displayed by the Father and the Son.
B. Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?
Heathen: Gentile, heathen, nation, people.
Why? Do they say where is your God?
Psalm 115:3 But our God is in the heavens: He hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.”
a. The Russians have a Bear as their political symbol, the Chinese have a Hammer and a Sickle, Muslim nations have Stars an Sickles, the United States has Elephants and Donkeys.
II. Where is the Lamb?
Psalm 115:4–8 “Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not: Eyes have they, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not: Noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, but they handle not: Feet have they, but they walk not: Neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; So is every one that trusteth in them.”
A. These graven images have no power, other than that which God provides. Put your trust in the Lamb and not in man.
III. TRUST IN THE LORD. The only existing God!!
Psalm 115:9–18 “O Israel, trust thou in the Lord: He is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord: He is their help and their shield. Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord: He is their help and their shield. The Lord hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron. He will bless them that fear the Lord, Both small and great. The Lord shall increase you more and more, You and your children. Ye are blessed of the Lord Which made heaven and earth. The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: But the earth hath he given to the children of men. The dead praise not the Lord, Neither any that go down into silence. But we will bless the Lord From this time forth and for evermore. Praise the Lord.”
Because: Psalm 139:1–4 “O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, Thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, And art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, But, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.”
My Heart
My thoughts
My actions
My words.
A. All our honor and glory are due Him! Our trust should only be in Him. He is a living God not a dead lifeless god.
He is our help in time of need and a covering for our sin “our shield.”
He will bless us with everlasting life and increase our knowledge of Him by the hearing, reading and abiding in His word.
Everything that was made was made by Him. We can only give Him honor and praise as we sojourn here on this earth by being a blessing to Him all the days that we live.
