Psalm 23:2 ESV
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
Psalm 23:3 ESV
3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Restoring my soul.
Restore- to bring back to its original existence, use, or position.

Restored.

1939 chevrolet. 10 years.
Sometimes there are accidents. We get damaged.
sometimes its time. things change in time.
Sometimes its weather- storms, tornadoes, etc.,
sometimes its wear and tear.
Whatever it is it happens. And it happens to us. too.
Things need restored. Put right. set back in order.
restoring can be both physical and spiritual…in this passage, it has the sense of both. The shepherd restores everything… body, mind and soul. Hence, the sheep says “It shall not want.”

Soul

Soul- the part of a person that thinks, feels, wills, and desires. the soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, appetite and emotion. It’s who you are.
Our being- our souls, they get damaged. Storms, time, wear and tear. There’s a time to get things set right again.
Back to how they were meant to be.

He Restores My Soul-David

David sinned. You will find it in 2 Samuel 11
2 Samuel 11 ESV
1 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. 2 It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. 3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.” 6 So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. 7 When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was doing and how the people were doing and how the war was going. 8 Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king. 9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. 10 When they told David, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?” 11 Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.” 12 Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 And David invited him, and he ate in his presence and drank, so that he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. 14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.” 16 And as Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew there were valiant men. 17 And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the servants of David among the people fell. Uriah the Hittite also died. 18 Then Joab sent and told David all the news about the fighting. 19 And he instructed the messenger, “When you have finished telling all the news about the fighting to the king, 20 then, if the king’s anger rises, and if he says to you, ‘Why did you go so near the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall? 21 Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’ ” 22 So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him to tell. 23 The messenger said to David, “The men gained an advantage over us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate. 24 Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall. Some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.” 25 David said to the messenger, “Thus shall you say to Joab, ‘Do not let this matter displease you, for the sword devours now one and now another. Strengthen your attack against the city and overthrow it.’ And encourage him.” 26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she lamented over her husband. 27 And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.

David’s Need For Restoration

Psalm 51:1–12 ESV
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Psalm 51:10–12 (ESV)
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. ...12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

How much did God value David?

Psalm 17:8 ESV
8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,
The eye was considered the most valuable portion of the body… it would be protected above everything else.
David was the apple of God’s eye.... and yet....

How Much Did God Value David?

How Much Does God Value Us?

Psalm 36:7 ESV
7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 91:1 ESV
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

Peter

Peter in Luke 22.31-32
Luke 22:31–32 ESV
31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
Lets look at this passage in a different version… the message. Luke 22.31-32
Luke 22:31–32 MSG
31 “Simon, stay on your toes. Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat. 32 Simon, I’ve prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start.”
When you have come through the time of testing… (original is When you have turned again).... it means restored.... put back in order.
Peter, when you’ve come through… show somebody else the trail… it’s important.
Background....
Peter’s call.... in Matthew 4.18-19
Matthew 4:18–19 ESV
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
denial of Peter predicted.... Matthew 26.33-35
Matthew 26:33–35 ESV
33 Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
Commitment of Peter...... I’ll die with you.... this took place at the last supper...... wow.
That night.... Peter denies Jesus 3 times. the rest of the disciples leave him......commitment was nowhere to be found...... they fell away.
But after the resurrection.... he went looking for them ..... and look at this conversation...
Look at John 21.15-19
John 21:15–19 ESV
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”
Look closely again at that last verse..... what were Jesus’ first words when Peter chose to follow Him???
“Follow Me”....
Peter goes on to follow Jesus.... ultimately dying on a cross upside down like Jesus… upside down because he didn’t feel worthy to die “like” Jesus...

He Restores My Soul

The Bottom Line: Romans 8.37-39
Romans 8:37–39 (ESV)
37 ...in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,
39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
