Sermon Passage: 1 Samuel 23:14-18
1 Samuel 23:14–18 NKJV
And David stayed in strongholds in the wilderness, and remained in the mountains in the Wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand. So David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. And David was in the Wilderness of Ziph in a forest. Then Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God. And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Even my father Saul knows that.” So the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. And David stayed in the woods, and Jonathan went to his own house.

I. THE PLANS OF OTHERS

1 Samuel 19:1–3 NKJV
Now Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David; but Jonathan, Saul’s son, delighted greatly in David. So Jonathan told David, saying, “My father Saul seeks to kill you. Therefore please be on your guard until morning, and stay in a secret place and hide. And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak with my father about you. Then what I observe, I will tell you.”
King Saul modeled:
The wrong Attitude
The wrong Actions
The wrong Ambitions
The wrong Aspirations
Proverbs 19:21 NKJV
There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.

WE CAN’T DO WRONG

1 Samuel 19:4–6 NKJV
Thus Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let not the king sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you. For he took his life in his hands and killed the Philistine, and the Lord brought about a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?” So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.”
HIS FATHER HAD HIS OWN PLAN AND DISREGARDED GOD’S PLAN
Saul wanted to continue to be king although the LORD stated that He had stripped it from him and given it to His neighbor
HIS FATHER SOUGHT TO ESTABLISH HIS OWN PLAN AND DESTROY GOD’S PLAN
HAVE YOU ALLOWED THE PLANS OF PEOPLE TO DISTRACT YOU FROM GOD’S PLANS?

II. PLEASING PARENTS

1 Samuel 20:30 NKJV
Then Saul’s anger was aroused against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?
‌Jonathan was loyal to His Heavenly Father not his father the king.

47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.” 48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!

III. PERSONAL POSITIONS

1 Samuel 20:30–33 NKJV
Then Saul’s anger was aroused against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Now therefore, send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.” And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why should he be killed? What has he done?” Then Saul cast a spear at him to kill him, by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to kill David.
