The Way, the Truth, and the Life

4 And you know the way to where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
What does our passage say about Jesus?
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the way
21 So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
22 So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
23 He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”
25 So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.
26 I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.”
There was this confusion, where is Jesus going? The Jewish leaders were confused. What about His disciples?
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
Do you notice the difference in responses to the Pharisees and His disciples? They were both confused, but Jesus told the Pharisees where I am going you can not come but to the disciples He said what? Look at verse 3 of chapter 14
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own,
26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Another important point about Jesus as the way is at the end of the verse let’s look at it again,
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is the only way. This is very important.
What else does the verse say about Jesus?
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
The truth. Jesus is the only source of truth.
Answers in Genesis
What else does the passage say about Jesus?
The life.
7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
At the center of sin is self, what I want, what I desire, what I deserve. Sin sees no one else but yourself and doesn’t care about any one else but self, but there is a better life. There is a better way. Life more abundantly!
Who would like that? Now I don’t believe it is what you think, some so called pastors claim this is health and wealth. But that is not it at all. That is still the problem people are having understanding Jesus. In our flesh all we understand is this physical world. I would argue that Jesus is talking about spiritually your life will be abundant. I think the key to this abundance is in the next verse Jesus lied down HIs life. See if you lay down your self life. I wants, my desires, my rights. It frees you to genuinely love others and this leads to life more abundant. You are free to love others and disregard your rights and how someone wronged you. I listen to a pastor talking about this. Have you ever thought about Jesus’ life in this regard? Jesus was constantly mistreated. Everyday people were arguing with what He said, disregarding what He said. Calling Him names, planning to kill Him and He just kept living an abundant life regardless of how others treated Him why? Because He was love. He is love. He selflessly laid down His life for His sheep and He calls us to do the same. To lay down our lives for Him. You must die to self and pick up your cross and follow Him. What is your reward? You will have life and have it more abundantly.
What does the passage say about us?
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”
In our flesh, we can’t understand spiritual matters. Thomas and the Pharisees a few chapters back could not understand what Jesus was saying. They were only thinking physically. We need the Holy Spirit to understand scripture.
14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
What is our call to action from this passage?
11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
Believe Jesus is who He says He is.
