Peter

We live in a world today with more stress, more anxiety, more worry than ever before.
a caveman ONLY had to worry about weather, food, and shelter — maybe a bear or a beast
a cave man did not wear a Timex or even an apple watch
nor did they know or worry about traffic or being late for a meeting
a man or woman today seems to worry about money --- not for food or water but for financial security — credit cards
it goes on and on.
We sitting here know that the solution is in the Scripture --- Jesus tells us to
keep it simple
Matthew 6:33 ESV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Jesus tells us
John 14:27 ESV
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Pauls letter to the Phillipian
Philippians 4:7 ESV
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
It is well know that we remember stories or narratives better than a long list of facts
Today we have Scripture about a man that walked with Jesus and displays the
Qualities of man and the Character of Jesus
it is the story of Peter on the night and morning of Jesus Death
Peter always the bold and the Leader
Peter the confidence --- I WILL DO IT LORD
Shows us that the bold may falter,
the bold may error
but that Jesus is the Restorer,
the Forgiver,
the Provider of Strength
to take a bold then broken man
to Amazing works for Jesus.
Just because the Rooster crows, doesn’t mean you are lost forever

PETER BACKGROUND

The New Testament provides limited information on Peter’s life and background
before his call to discipleship.
His Hebrew name is Simon or Simeon (see Acts 15:14).
His father’s name is John, and his brother’s name is Andrew (the disciple of Jesus).
Peter grew up in
a fishing village on the shore of the Sea of Galilee
and operated a fishing business in partnership with the Zebedee brothers,
James and John (also disciples of Jesus; John 1:44; Mark 1:16; Luke 5:10).
He apparently was married (Mark 1:30; 1 Cor 9:5) and later lived in Capernaum.
Peter becomes the spokesman for the twelve
Jesus gives Him name Peter meaning ROCK
Peter is an emotional guy — Bold and Edgy at times
Peter is a Proclaimer of his strength ----which will fail
You will notice a deep change in Peter from the Peter in the Gospel
to the heart lead man in his writing of 1 and 2 Peter
Peter becomes a Proclaimer of TRUE STRENGTH
— Only available in Christ Jesus
Peter Becomes the first recorded preacher of the Good News - The Gospel
He is a missionary to the Gentiles and to the Jews through the early part of the Book of Acts
A Leader in the Early Church
Peter was a strong man of the world, and lived life prior to Jesus as a strong physical lead man
But Peter is a model to us that is easy to accept and understand.
Strong, reactional and emotional
Willing to stand up --- ask tough questions
maybe even a little impetuous
Head strong --- a Proclaim of WHAT HE THINKS IS RIGHT
but today we talk about a few sections of Scripture
that shows a bold man operating from his own mind and understanding
to a man restored and changed because of Christ
We will see a man today who stood boldly for the Lord
and then shrunk away when needing to stand for the Lord
but this story has a blessing and we should not miss it
Just because the Rooster crows, doesn’t mean you are lost forever
For our Lord is the Restorer ---
our message is about
rebellion - denial - submission - and restoration

Rebellion

We all have moments in our life where we are bold for Christ
- but out of God’s Will
We need to Pause, Pray, Ponder and Proceed --
I am not suggesting that we always wait,
but i am saying Christ wants us to always listen.
our Scripture today —
Peter drews his sword
and strikes off the right ear of the High Priest Servant.
Peter’s self confidence was misplaced
He stepped up to help and defend the Lord
Yet the Lord had not called him to this mission
peter thought he knew better
Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
We often quote this --- yet it is the end of this verse that i point out today
----Who can understand it?
Peter was a follower of Christ
Peter walked with Christ for three years — daily - committed his life to Jesus
If JESUS wanted to prevent the arrest or delay the timing --- HE could have called a legion of angels
So there is a sense that Peter understood a leadership among the disciples
He likely was always the first to take action
His Christ is being threatened and HE IS GOING TO STEP UP
Not a BAD THING in theory ---
but he stepped outside of the Will of God
If we go back to Luke 22 we will remember a discuss about the disciples arguing
Let me take you back a few hours of the night we are examining
Jesus presented the Last Supper
Jesus broke the bread and poured the wine of the first communion
Jesus calls out his BETRAYER in Judas
As the confusion of who it was to betray Jesus, there was another discussion
WHO WOULD BE THE GREATEST AMONG THEM
in a Jewish world at the time they would know only what they knew
the most religious will be elevated to a place of power
so it is understandable combined with our heart issue as a human
Here is where Jesus addresses this faulty thinking
by telling them that the the Greatest will be the lesser — and their kingdom is not on this earth but in Heaven
Our confidence must be in the Lord — not our own understanding

Denial

So hours before the sword incident in the Garden
— Jesus calls to Peter at the table
and tells him that Satan has asked for him
Luke 22:31–33 (ESV)
31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat,
32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”
Jesus prays that Peter’s faith will not fail
and ordains him to strength his brethren
here is the bold Peter again
Luke 22:33 (ESV)
33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”
Jesus knows our heart
and tells Peter
Luke 22:34 (ESV)
34 Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”
BUT
Just because the Rooster crows, doesn’t mean you are lost forever

Submission/Restoration

Peter was called the ROCK
Jesus tells him
Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Bold Peter - to Crushed Peter — to the Church Builder
Peter tells Jesus that he would die for HIM
Peter steps forward and strikes the ear of a servant with a Sword
Jesus is taken away by the Guards
Jesus is going to be questioned in the court of the HIGH PRIEST
Our verses 13-14 of John 18 tell us that they had murder on their mind
John 18:15–18 (ESV)
15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,
16 but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.
17 The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”
18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
thats ONE
Jesus is being questioned in side the court
Peter.....
John 18:25 (ESV)
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
That’s Two
John 18:26 (ESV)
26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”
John 18:27 ESV
27 Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.
that’s three times
Baseball tells us THREE STRIKES YOUR OUT
The world likes to tell us we are OUT — no longer worthy
and depression and anxiety creeps in
Just because the Rooster crows, doesn’t mean you are lost forever
Peter the Bold --- Peter the ROCK
appears to slide under a rock BUT
JESUS IS THE RESTORER
lets finish our message today
with the RESTORATION of the Broken Peter
lets jump ahead to complete the message of Peter and Restoration
Jesus has RISEN --- He is walking among his loved ones
We will talk about that at a later date.— but i want you to see the LOVE OF JESUS as we close this morning.
John 21:15–18 (ESV)
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.”
John 21:19 (ESV)
19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”
Our loved Peter --- Bold and Strong in the Faith
Misguided and self serving
Many times seeking understanding with false bravado
Peter broken and feeling a failure
feeling useless
returns to the earthly work of FISHING
Likely feeling the heaviness of denying his Lord
is Restored and Called to do a GREAT WORK
Conclusion
We should take heart today that Jesus is the SAME TODAY
We have all failed in the past
We may have allowed those failures to define us
But JESUS DEFINES US
JESUS LOVES YOU
so Today i remind you
Just because the Rooster crows, doesn’t mean you are lost forever
We all have been LOST
BUT we know are FOUND
Looking forward in JOY AND PEACE
and leaving our past failure in the Past
ALL GLORY TO GOD OUR FATHER
ALL GLORY TO JESUS OUR LORD
Lets Pray
