Introduction:

Purpose:
Not only to establish facts
But to depict this gradual reception of it.
To see them come to believe in the Resurrection
2 Main events in John’s gospel:
Visit of Peter & John
Appearance of Jesus before Mary
John 20:11–13 NASB95
11 But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
Mary was weeping outside the tomb
Peter & John examined the tomb… & John was persuaded Jesus rose from the dead, despite not yet understanding what it all meant
May didn’t have that confidence… so she wept
Stooped & Looked
She wanted to see what they saw
She didn’t notice the burial wrappings… because of 2 angels in white, sitting
Did she know they were?
Hebrews 13:2 “2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”
We don’t know… but she responds appropriately: ‘they have taken my Lord, & I don’t know where they laid him’
Angel
No doubt, that angel was sent to verify the resurrection
It is their duty to relay a divine message, in this case to comfort & Council
‘Why are you weeping?’
Is not the implication this: That there is no reason to weep?
Both of them ask the question… & Mary STILL gives the same response as she did to the disciples… they’ve taken him away.
Angels, are no doubt used by God today in ways we could never understand
Yet here we see a grand image… Mary stooping in the tomb… and seeing 2 angels in white at the head & feet of where Christ had been laid
JUST as the 2 Cherubim, are seated at each end of the mercy seat
John 20:14–16 NASB95
14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher).
Did Mary know Jesus? Yes! … So why not now?
She couldn’t recognize Him due to tears
Emotion… Or because He had somewhat of an altered appearance
Mark 16:12 “12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country.”
But I believe it was in the working of God for Jesus not to immediately reveal Himself to her
To get at her heart of unbelief..
& to show her how easily she forgot the promise of His resurrection
‘Why are you weeping, whom are you seeking?’
Again, Jesus didn’t immediately reveal Himself
‘tell me where you laid him, I’ll take him away’
She still doesn’t understand… but nonetheless she’s as devoted as she can be to finding Jesus
What happens when she finds the body?
Carry Jesus herself? 100 pounds of spices?
& what happens when Pilate find YOU with the body? What happens then?
Yet she loved the Lord & sought to find His body
‘MARY’
Jesus only had to say one word
It was His voice / tone
& instantly called him Rabboni
Jesus didn’t reveal Himself by telling her who HE was… but telling her sho SHE was
She had heard her name no doubt, countless times over the span of those 3 days & really her entire life… but at the tone of Jesus her heart leaps for joy
The garden of eden: SORROW for the woman
The garden where Christ was buried: JOY for the woman
John 20:17–18 NASB95
17 Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.
‘Do not cling to me’
Telling her not to touch her? Doubtful
The implication is that Mary immediately clung to Him and wouldn’t let go!
“Stop clinging… rather than… DO not cling”
“Go to my brethren”
He had called them servants, friends, disciples… but now… brethren
“He says not ‘Our Father’: in one sense therefore, He is mine, in another sense He is yours; by nature mine, by grace yours… my God, under whom I also am as a man; your God, between whom and you I am a mediator.” (Augustine)
he is the Son, we are not
but we are made to be sons of god through Him.
and can only call god our father because he is christs
